The foe's Electroweb made it seem like the foe was a Bug-type. If it were a bit larger, Josh would love to find one of these for himself. Perhaps it would be easier for his friend Shalin Nariya to gear up, given her smaller size. Sadly, there was no way the insect could even begin to support someone so heavyset.

"To be able to deflect and absorb as fast of an attack as Shock Wave is something I've never seen," Josh answered Katherine. Blitz growled and snarled, his mouth opening to reveal mist falling from within. "Try an ICE FANG!" Still unfamiliar with the alien Pokémon, the Gym Leader learned about combating unfamiliar Pokémon the only way he could: trying different attack types and seeing what worked! Nodding, the yellow Luxray lunged toward his foe, attempting to chomp down on it and freeze it in place.

Not to mention, an exotic concoction had given her a second ability. The DISGUISE often came in handy—especially in a pinch. Josh's command persuades Katherine to give her own, as though dictating the elite four's choice and tempo in battle.

The Ultra Beast offer a curt nod before activating its ME FIRST talent, which allows for an identical ICE FANG to manifest. She lunges too, aiming to exchange similar, icy blows with the Luxray.

Josh's Luxray was one of his swiftest Pokémon, able to lunge at almost any foe with confounding speed. The Ultra Beast counterattacked with speed that left even the Master of Faster and his partner helpless at the mimicked ice attack. The critical hit left the electric lion on his last legs. "Holy..." Mauville's Gym Leader gasped as even he could not follow all of the bug-type's moves as they came at him at surreal speed. Even his eyes, trained for high speed, could not follow the Pokémon.

Josh sent out his Manectric, Saber, not to use in the battle, but to assume the Z-Pose for his very last stand against the foe. As fast as the Pheromosa was, there was one ace in the hole the Gym Leader had remaining. He mounted the electric-type and grabbed the canine's reins, crossing his arms while holding them. "HYPERSONIC..." he shouted as he vigorously straightened his arms, Saber doing his best not to rear from the sudden tug from both sides.

"...PLASMA CHARGE!!!"

After obtaining Z-Power, the user envelops itself in lightning bolts, then charges faster than the speed of sound. This move always goes first, even before other priority moves, and will always deal at least neutral damage, regardless of types or abilities.

With a primal roar, the Luxray was surrounded by four lightning bolts that danced around him. When they were about to strike him, the black-and-yellow lion disappeared from sight in a sonic boom, headed right toward the Malevolent's Ultra Beast at a speed surely even they couldn't match.

A Z-move?

For a fleeting moment, Katherine questions it-- not just the gym leader's choice in using it but also whether her Pokemon should endure it for the sake of a sparring match. Seeing as she made no move to recall the Ultra Beast, it's fair to assume that the answer was yes.

Pheromosa should see this battle through to the end.

No attempt at matching the speed is made, but rather, the beast prepares herself (as best she can) for the Luxray's arrival. Her arms cross in an X, seeking to mitigate even the most minimal amount of damage-- and then they strike. Pheromosa is sent flying back, the impact of the attack easily managing to knock the light Pokemon off its feet.

Dust shrouds her in a small cloud, silent moments pass without a sign of life.

Z-Moves were among the most powerful discharges of energy Pokémon were capable of. It was one of the few ways that determined humans could go toe-to-toe with the gods themselves. This move specifically was one the Gym Leader had developed for chasing Raikou. It was so fast that not even legendary Pokémon could outrun it. Well, one could. It was one Eva Morales was more than familiar with. That was speed Josh got to experience firsthand.

While the Z-Move was incomprehensibly fast, it was equally stressful. The stress peaked at the moment the shiny Luxray broke the sound barrier, a headache inducing sonic boom ringing in the ears of many of those present. Even Josh couldn't fully get used to it. Blitz was simply too weak to remain standing after the discharge of Z-Power. While the smoke was still clearing, the yellow-and-black lion collapsed in unconsciousness, though it would have been difficult to tell from Katherine's side through the dust cloud.

Without a judge present, determining who won the battle would have been next to impossible, unless... was the Ultra Beast still standing after that, somehow?

Pheromosa stands. By sheer will or perhaps manipulation of gravity itself, it stands. It is undeniably damaged, bruised and hurt-- and it stands. The Ultra Beast's legs wobble slightly as she struggles to maintain her footing, but she never collapses.

"Huh," Katherine wasn't surprised by the result, it seems, "I'd say you gave us a run for our money there. Have you considered tweaking it a little?"

A breath later, she clarifies, "That Z-move, I mean. Perhaps sacrifice some speed to ensure that your Luxray can survive it, y'know."

Josh's mouth was wide open in awe. How could a Pokémon as speedy looking as Pheromosa remain standing after such a strong blow? Josh's experience with incredibly fast Pokémon, including his own Pokémon, was that ones capable of high speed often could not take hits well. For a Pokémon like that to remain upright after a Z-Move was mind-blowing to the Gym Leader. "I had zero expectations of winning our battle, especially with a Pokémon I had never seen before. Half the battle was figuring out what types it could possibly be."

Katherine had a point; the surreal speed of the Z-Move did put the Pokémon through a great deal of exertion. Perhaps he could train his Pokémon to do some speed control. After all, the move was discovered recently. It was difficult to practice with, though; the move could only be practiced once per day. "That's because I optimized it for racing and not for battle. Thank you, though. I'll see about making some adjustments to it."

Josh withdrew his fallen Luxray and walked toward the standing Elite Four member, offering her a handshake. "This was really helpful," the racer admitted. "It's taught me the value of unavoidable attacks like Shock Wave. I hope our battle gives you confidence in Mauville's Gym. And Katherine? I'm sure the next time we meet will be at the Pokémon League."
