Usually, when wishing to reach the summit of Mount Chimney, people make use of the gondolas or of their own Pokémon, making the journey a simple one. Unfortunately for Summer Atreides, Mars would say ’Fuck that.’, because climbing Mount Chimney is an obvious opportunity for a good hike, and since she had expressed wanting to exercise more this year, she has now been invited to join him on this nice little walk up the volcano…

Here they stand, at the bottom of Jagged Pass; the most treacherous and arduous path in all of Mount Chimney. Mars smiles while looking up at the journey ahead of them, although by his side a stoic Riolu doesn’t seem nearly as entertained.

“Are you ready, Summer? This will be great.” It’s not optimism, it’s excitement. Mars loves this kind of stuff, his own exercise routine being one intense and with which he’s ever so diligent (just ask BARNABY FINCH, he knows all about it). “Should we start with a light jog?”

It wasn't that Summer didn't find herself unfit or unhealthy. It was quite the opposite: she found herself attractive, she ate well, and her health was amazing, except for the rare occasion that she got sick from overworking.[break][break]

However, she came to realize that as a CEO, she wasn't getting near as much walking time than when she had been under her father's command. She had been discussing this resolution with Martín del Mar, and when he invited her to join him on a hike, she accepted.[break][break]

This, however, was not what she was expecting one bit.[break][break]

"Mars... you do know that I'm not an experienced hiker, right?" Summer said warily, giving him an almost skeptical look before eyeing the path ahead of them.[break][break]

Sighing, she felt like she was in a bind, her ghostly ZOROARK standing silently behind her.[break][break]

"Or a walk...?"

Okay, so, to be fair... Summer Atreides does have a point. She isn't an experienced hiker and he probably should take it easy on her so that she won't end up hurting herself. But he also could argue that life in Hoenn never takes it easy on them and that it's important to work hard, or some other convincing bullshit like that...

It's at the tip of his tongue, he's so very tempted to say it, but in the end, he sighs.

"Fine, fine, we can start off at a easy pace." He tells her with a bright and reassuring smile. What is Mars' exact definition of 'easy', though?

Well... he starts going up the volcano, up and up, and he doesn't stop once.
[break][break]
"Isn't this great? Air gets thinner with the altitude, so make sure to watch your breathing. Oh, and be careful with loose rocks..." Just as he says this, a rock comes loose as he takes a step, almost landing on his foot and then rolling down the path. "Like that."

There's also other dangers, like wild pokémon, but we'll get to that...

There were definitely wheels churning in his brain. Summer could almost see them, and she was prepared to make further argument for her own sake. But, she didn't have to as he agreed.[break][break]

She spared a quick glance to Hela before following him at a quick pace. Her Pokemon took to the shadows, using her ILLUSION here and there to change to different types of Pokemon she spotted in the distance. Almost like a warning sign to her trainer and Mars.[break][break]

"Yeah... this is great— ah!" Summer barely missed the rock, several more crumbling past her feet. She looked up, puffing as she wondered how much longer they had before he'd take a break.[break][break]

For her sake, at least.

Take breaks? Mars? Breaks are for the weak. Work hard, play hard, and in this case 'play hard' apparently means hike up a fucking volcano just for fun. At least the Riolu seems to have no difficulty keeping it, which makes it clear that the small Pokémon is used to being taken on hikes of this kind. Mars has been working hard on training Ajax, after all.

"Right? And the view will make it all worth it. Ever been to the top of Mount Chimney? You can see all of Hoenn." Mars goes on and on, unbothered. Usually, these kinds of hikes are done alone and while listening to music or an audiobook, so the company is more than appreciated. After all, Mars is nothing if not extremely sociable.

This doesn't change even when he hears a loud and familiar ringing of metal in the vicinity, causing him to stop for a few seconds.

"Hmm... That sounds like a Metagross. We might want to keep an eye out."

With this said, he keeps on walking. Talk about a short break!

Either Mars ignored her sarcasm or didn't hear it all together. Either way, after she recovered, Summer rolled her eyes behind his back, trying to keep up with him as he took off again without hesitation.[break][break]

"Mars, don't you think we could-" Her question was cut off by the clanging sound, both of them pausing in their steps.[break][break]

"METAGROSS, huh... maybe we should stop and go back..." she wondered to herself. But before she could even voice those concerns, Mars started again.[break][break]

"What sort of break was that?"

"Huh?" He looks at her, raising a brow as if he were questioning her very sanity. Mars doesn't take breaks, obviously. He doesn't need them! He's just that good! Or, so he would claim, at least. The simple truth is that he's much more used to this than Summer is and that being empathic when it comes to this sort of thing has never been his forte.

"Come on, Summer. We're almost there. Don't you think it'll be much more rewarding to get to the top without having stopped?" He grins with that charming smile of his.

Thankfully for Summer (or not so thankfully), the Riolu's aura senses detect nearby hostility, and he tugs at Mars' pant leg to inform him of this. Looking up at his trainer, Ajax points towards a distant spot... A spot where a Metagross readies a FLASH CANNON.

"Oh." Mars grabs his friend by the wrist, and without a warning, he TELEPORTS her out of harm's way, appearing metres away. "Okay... Maybe we can take a short break."
[break][break]
With a smirk, he whistles for the Riolu to engage the much larger and stronger pokémon. Ajax can handle it.

There was a part of her that wanted to agree. But, the majority of Summer's brain felt fried and tired already from the hike up. And they still had to go back down.[break][break]

"A stop or two won't hurt. It's a long way up, after all. This is like expert level, and you brought a beginner with you," she said with a look, pouting.[break][break]

When Mars's RIOLU made notice of the METAGROSS, Summer's ZOROARK shifted itself, preparing an attack to support Ajax.[break][break]

Summer, in the mean time, let out a small yelp as Mars grabbed her hips as swung her around, suddenly in a new spot. Her hands gripped at his shirt tightly, completely unwarned of the TELEPORT.[break][break]

"I'm going to die today."

Summer's argument falls on deaf ears... because the sound of the FLASH CANNON completely overpowers it, as does that of the large rocks that fall as a result of the blast. Thankfully, by that point both her and Mars are at a safe distance, and its with interest that the underboss watches the fight — clearly taking this as an opportunity to train his Riolu.

"Oh, come on. You have to admit that it's at least kind of exciting!" He laughs, unbothered. Perhaps all the deadly situations he's constantly in affect him to the degree that this seems like a simple day-to-day encounter, or perhaps its his hubris believing that he can easily avoid all harm.

Regardless, the Metagross is dealt with soon enough, and Mars looks at Summer with a brilliant smile.

"Fine, I guess we can cheat a little." He offers her his hand. "I'll take us to the summit, but no slacking on the way back."
[break][break]
At least they'll take a break once appearing up top, even if only to admire the scenery... right?
