Alone, she marked her fifth visit to these barren lands, with sparks of hope still bright within her chest.

Here, Penelope had held the chance to bare witness to powers far beyond her very imagination. She wondered if this visit would allow her to stay so lucky.

"Stay close," she murmured down to her Riolu, Rio, who just huffed in response. As if to say, 'of course.'

Out between the vast nothingness, spirals of sepia wisps marked her journey, each one trudging up another memory of her previous voyages. Was it greed that made her this way? Or, perhaps, had a deep seed of ENVY sprouted within her, turning her body into fertile soil.

Wraiths had shown a tendency to follow Angelo ever since he'd first visited the border. Travelling with him even beyond the rift, in the memory of accusatory whispers and greedy claws. Vengeful fire.

Was this another phantom of the past, outlined in a shadow through the mist, that had come to haunt them?

Latios... He glances to the eon pokémon at his side, their whetted eyes connecting.

With a gentle coaxing, like a refreshing autumn breeze, furls of otherworldly mist are guided away with Latios's defog. Exposing to him those that lurk within the cover of the border's shroud.

“Penelope?”

Only behind the curtain he finds a familiar presence. Councilwoman PENELOPE LIVY. There's a flash of wariness in his gut, hidden behind his own eye-bound fog. “Didn't expect to see a friendly face out here.”

Latios is suddenly nowhere to be seen.

The beckon of her name called attention to one of the few friendly faces equipped enough to lessen the tension collecting at her shoulders.

An eyebrow raises, smiles passed between the pair as their mutual surprise is shared. “It's like you don't know me at all.”

Stepping forward to meet the councilwoman, Angelo shields his eyes from the sun in kind, the shadowy reprieve from a floating island drifting aside.

Hopefully it doesn't foreshadow the phantom's return.

“Work, technically. I'm surveying the place so I can piece together a map. There's lots to explore.” He shrugged, as if he didn't mind. “You?”

Curiously, he follows Penelope's gaze towards where his companion had last been sighted. Only to find Latios was no longer (visibly) there.

“Don't mind him. He's shy.” He didn't need to see the eon pokémon to feel the ruby eyes burning into his neck with unimpressed objection.

Angelo was right. How was that even a question? Since their first meeting, the word 'adventure' had become synonymous with the pilot. And, if nothing else, these rifts provided just that.

"I should've known."

If only she'd brought the map kyle lopez had pieced together during their expeditions to the borders. Maybe it'd offer something Angelo hadn't known he'd be looking for. But, on the other hand, he always gave the impression of someone who'd want to discover the hidden secrets of a piece of land on his own.

"It's okay, I don't blame him. I used to be a bit shy myself."

Back in High School to be exact. Thankfully, those years were long gone.

Teasing mirth like an unseen, bubbling creek that flows between Angelo and Latios suddenly turns still, waters dammed by an innocently simple question.

Penelope's request bringing about an uncharacteristic pause in the pilot.

Last he was here, hungry spirits had hunted him mercilessly. Their bony, wraith fingers desperately stretching towards the warmth of a flame he carries in his pocket.

They'd been cautious this time, keeping clear of the fog. So far, so good...

“If you want. But for the record, I wasn't very well received by the spirits around here last time.”

He measures Penelope with watchful blues.

“If that doesn't bother you then yeah, course you can.”

ANGELO VESTRI will contend with spirits attempting to steal or absorb the victini soul fragment at all costs, including distracting him by using SKYLER DROSS.

The warning almost evoked the deepest laughter from her. When it came to luck, PENELOPE LIVY, MATIAS SILPH, kyle lopez, and Melody Miro might've been the worst of them all. Between finding herself slaughtered and revived to growing face to face with the ruination of Hoenn itself, there hadn't been a shred of positivity awaiting for her within these barren lands of dust and memories.

A watchful gaze crinkles at the corners, contrary to the absent arc of joy he feels from her answer. “Then I'm removed from any liability. Music to my ears.”

Penelope's company meant Latios would drift from his side and the soul flame he carried hidden.

He'd wanted to see if the wrathful spirit of Victini would appear again. See if he could reunite it with its fragmented, lost self.

There would be too many questions if he tried now.

“Not the north, I've spent enough time there.” From his pocket, Angelo pulls out a small journal, thumbing through the dogeared pages. “Been up to the floating islands yet?”
