The pain was apparent in Josh's hesitation, tears running down his cheeks, and at times, stammering. It was clear from his body language, and his mount's as well, that this was the biggest mistake of his life.

"...My Luxray stopped attacking and began to protest over the whole thing. So I used the one Pokémon battle-crazed enough to listen to me: King Zing, my Beedrill." He would go on to describe the gruesome battle they had, culminating with a triple-sting directly to Eris. "I lost control of my emotions that day. I was desperate for answers. Why did Team Rocket kill Raikou?"

Sensing the poor racer's negative emotions spilling out, a wild Swablu bravely landed on Josh's arm, chirping and making shrill cries when Blinky made some sudden turns from the racer flinching. The small flying-type seemed to be having a great time as Josh struggled to regain control of his electric ride. "What's gotten into you, Blinky?" the Leader asked, trying to rein his mount in, but she had too much energy pent up.

The yellow fox accelerated down Hoenn's western flats before pulling a sharp about face that took Josh by surprise. The young man grunted loudly as he struggled against the swift creature's sharp turn, the Swablu on his arm letting out a staccato of chirps. "You're one tough Swablu!" Josh gave the bird's head a gentle pat before he outstretched his arm. "Off you go!" The flying-type refused to take off. remaining on his arm. "Wait, you want to come with me?" With a confirming nod from the wild, the Gym Leader tapped the Swablu's head with an empty Poké Ball.

when he had first read about the incident, cian was unsure how to feel apart from sorry for everyone involved. he still feels the same, though now there's also a tinge of disappointment that he meets josh with.[break][break]

a cute little furret tries to SUCKER PUNCH him in the nuts but his darumaka is quick to leap in front of the way. after taking the attack, darumaka returns a SUPERPOWER PUNCH that downs the furret into a pokeball.[break][break]

"I know. It's the worst mistake I've ever made in my life." Josh replied, tilting his head down. "Remember when we went to Johto to see my family last year? Ever since I went to Ecruteak's Burned Tower that day, I've just felt... empty. My biggest dream, pulled out from underneath me. It was like finding out a family member had passed away." Even thinking about that day caused tears to roll down his cheek. What was supposed to be an exciting vacation and reunion wound up unraveling a heartbreaking revelation.

Raikou was dead. And forever with it, Josh's dream.

"I just want answers. You worked with Team Rocket at some point. How much do you know about the war, and why did Team Rocket kill Raikou?" He paused to sniff, Blinky shuffling her feet.

"Interesting that Hoenn doesn't teach history," Josh replied. "One of my favorite things to learn in school was about Johto's rich history. I could see about not teaching recent events until high school or so, but before all the crazy stuff started happening..." he trailed off, unsure where he was going.

Josh frowned at Cian's cluelessness about Raikou. "I know. Like I said when we went to Johto, I still have my hopes that there's another one out there. But until if or when that opportunity arises, I have my focus on the Champion Assessment, and self-improvement." He cleared his throat. "And really? If I want to see him again, I just gotta meet up with Kyle. We're good friends." Blinky sounded a yip of encouragement. "I just want an answer. And I think... no, I know... that the answer will surface. If I can't be with Raikou, I at least want to avenge him."

Josh shook his head after Cian's battle with the wild Lopunny. "And being a Champion of Hoenn will put me in the best position I can to do so."

Cian's scathing remarks opened Josh's eyes to the never-ending political disagreement within Hoenn's high ranks. There were those, such as MATIAS SILPH and formerly himself, that felt Team Rocket needed to be obliterated completely, razed all the way to the ground. There were others, like Cian and Callan Young , that felt Champions were responsible for defending even Team Rocket's most despicable people... or at least giving them due process. "...Even terrorists like Cillian Quinn ? Are Champions really obligated to protect them, too?"

Cian's remark about Josh's pursuit of Raikou being selfish stung. He wasn't even sure how to respond without getting emotional. For now, he remained silent about the remark.

Meanwhile, farther back along the trail through the foothills, a wild Drampa had caught the scent of Basil's forehead leaf through the increasingly breezy weather. The dragon's laughing from the Leafeon's tickling got Josh's attention, taking advantage of the distraction by hurling an empty Poké Ball at it. While Drampa wouldn't make a good racing Pokémon, it would make a fantastic beginner Pokémon for his riding academy that was part of Mauville Racing Grounds.

Cian's bold statement made Josh rein his Jolteon to a complete stop. He was aware Cian was a defector from Rocket, but just how high up the chain of command was he? Josh's face looked frozen as he processed the implications of what he had just been told. "Arceus, Cian... to me, people like Gavin have been irredemable, irreparable... and yet, a Champion is to still safeguard them? They're some of the most wanted people in all of Hoenn."

It was hard for him to accept, and felt like it was against the League's tenets to protect and safeguard regionally wanted crimelords. "Cian... just how far up the chain of command were you?"
