he is her ball of yarn, though he doesn't seem perturbed by that fact in the least. her gaze is heavy for most, scrutinizing and intense. despite her ability to slip on molly fouller like a well-loved dress, she's never been able to change her eyes.

like looking through ice, a woman said once, still gasping in anya's sheets - empty and empty and empty.

"mm." she doubts they're still talking about the environmental climate. most of rocket's beasts, she'd gather, would prefer to rule under kanto's regime. her observations remain her own for the time being.

"plush pillows and pampering - who could complain?" she says and follows his movements to one of her possessions.

"a rudimentary memory device," she offers, watching him in earnest now. "it would be fascinating, wouldn't it - if we could extract our enemies' memories?"

Anything built for use against their enemies could be used against their own kind, as well. Where had Anya Fowl ended up after her sudden disappearance? What technologies had she invented while working separately from Team Rocket?[break][break]

Zev did not automatically put down the device. He turned it over in his hands, careful not to press any buttons or switches.[break][break]

"Fascinating," he echoed, his tone neutral. Whether he agreed with her or not was up to her interpretation. "How does it work?"[break][break]

He doubted she would unveil her secrets so readily, but the question was worth a shot. Sometimes scientists could not resist the opportunity to talk about their work.

these are not her secrets. those are tucked away in her mind's eye, never to be pried from man or machine alike.

"it doesn't," she says. "memory is a fickle thing. we understand it about as well as we understand dreams." and at this, she reaches into her desk and withdraws a folder. it contains snapshots of nisa holo's otome route, as well as dossiers from rocket's own Lulu Flint.

"but if we can compartmentalize the episodic and semantic memories, we should be able to extract them, like raw data, from our subjects. then comes translation." she shrugs. "but it's a study in its most rudimentary stages."

she shifts some of the papers around. "might i make a request of you, zev?" she smiles and holds up a picture of nisa's form, swathed in mist. "i would like some of this."

From where he stood, Zev could not see the subject of the photo. Returning the memory device to the counter, he crossed the room and took the photo from Anya's fingers. He recognized Nisa Holo instantly from reports of the meteoroid operation.[break][break]

"Information about the DRK Triad in general?" he asked, raising blue eyes to meet Anya's. "Or about this woman specifically?"[break][break]

Though Lulu Flint and Naomi Sato had captured the DRK Triad member, she had subsequently been rescued by her colleague, an unknown woman. Where the two had escaped to was anyone's guess.[break][break]

Or did Anya mean the interdream mist itself?

her open-ended request leaves him to measure his value for her. he offers to deliver information, not the substantial bodies of those he mentions. it's realistic, at least, and she appreciates him for that.

not that it matters.

The mist.[break][break]

In the near future, Zev and other operatives within Team Rocket will plunge themselves into the Ultra Deep Sea, into the heart of the unknown dimension to retrieve a Seal Stone. There, they will find themselves beset on all sides by the pinkish-purple interdream mist that feeds on dreams and memory, subconsciousness and will.[break][break]

But at that moment, in anya fowl's laboratory, Zev narrowed his eyes. He considered the woman seated in front of him and what he knew of her — of her goals and desires, her morals and ethics, her interests and aptitude.[break][break]

"And what are you offering me in return?" he asked at length. Zev Harcourt never did anything for free.
