[attr="class","thadmain"]Kepler followed the path down to the quote-unquote public entrance of the Tree of Life.

Steps had been carved into the steep, and he had to be mindful of the moss that grew over them. It caught the wet Sootopolis sea wind and made the path slippery and treacherous.

Pluto hovered behind him, a lifeguard in case he should trip and plummet to his death.

It was like walking into a different world. Space opened up around him, filled with mist and subterranean canopies. Kepler swallowed, staring into the expanse.

“I’ve never actually been down here,” he confessed, torn between looking at the wonder of everything and focusing on where he was putting his boots. “It’s kind of fucking incredible?”

They were following the trail of a Rocket unit that had gone missing on routine patrol in this first section of the Tree which was accessible to the organization. Kepler was fresh off his three-month healing period and determined to not be a fucking wet blanket anymore. He was sort of amazed Temp had agreed to go with him, feeling certain the larger man would have demanded someone more capable.

Temp was good people, actually, Kepler had come to believe.

Temp followed behind, taking in the scenery. It had been a while, hadn't it?[break][break]

"Last time I was here I banged it out with Gav." There had been more to it than that. But the call to make a joke in the light of the mission had been too much. Plus it was true. His first, and if he remembered right only trip here had ended with some XXX rated scenes. The kind of shit that Proboards would ban you for describing.[break][break]

[attr="class","thadmain"]Kepler’s laughter is harsh and sudden, but also genuine, as they make it to what is considered the ‘ground floor’ of the tree. “I can respect it,” he said with a smile, “it’s a hell of an ambiance.”

He stepped over a long, green tendril and hummed thoughtfully, looking around them. Mist as thick as smoke threaded through gnarled roots that bulged in places, pockmarked and misshapen, like skulls of conjoined siblings. Kepler kept thinking he saw lights in the distance, flashing, but when he turned, there was nothing.

“Maybe,” he said, rubbing at his eyes, “maybe they made a wish.” It was a bad joke. They were talking about possible life or death of their compatriots, for fuck’s sake. But still.

“Does it look… normal, down here?” Kepler asked, and his voice echoed eerily in the gloom. The mist seemed to be getting thicker. He stepped back and smiled up at Temp. “From what you recall in between clapping cheeks, I mean.”

The mist was thick and sweet.[break][break]

Temp wrinkled his nose as they made their way deeper and deeper.[break][break]

"What kind of wish makes you vanish on the spot?" A few came to mind but none of them were kind. Somehow Temp didn't think that was what happened here, jokes aside.[break][break]

Was it normal, though?[break][break]

".... no. It was filled with trees. Like a weird forest. We were in a little grove." This didn't look anything like any of that. "And it was clear. No mist."

[attr="class","thadmain"]“You know, you make a wish when the clock strikes 11:11,” Kepler said, mouth moving before he realized that Temp wasn’t asking why people would make a wish at 11:11. “I dunno. A wish to not be here? A wish to be somewhere else? I wish I was on the beach, I wish I was at home… something like that?”

The mist did smell quite sweet, like spun sugar. Kepler stopped himself from licking his lips at the taste. There was the distant sound of-- women’s laughter? Low and melodious, like the pealing of bells. Something brushed against the top of Kepler’s head and he yelped and jumped away, smacking at what turned out to be a curtain of flowers, dangling from somewhere up above. A scattering of pink and red petals drifted to the ground.

“What the fuck?”

Ahead of them, a path revealed itself as the mist carved into almost a tunnel. Hanging garlands of bright flowers dripped down from above, swaying gently in an unfelt wind.

“I smell shenanigans,” Kepler said, cautiously moving forward.

Temp grabbed a pokeball and tossed it to the ground.[break][break]

A Tentacruel came out. She seemed unsure of the non-aquatic area, but with a shift of her weight she hauled herself up onto her tentacles to slide forward. Like some type of weird eldrich monster slithering on the ground.[break][break]

[attr="class","thadmain"]The path wove in between barrier-dense brush, tendrils of flowers dangling down. A scattering of candy-bright petals covered the ground. Kepler went shoulder first, and cautiously, hackles up and eyes wide open for anything about to jump out at them.

He caught the creepy, crawly Tentacruel out of the corner of his vision and gave temp a wry smile. ”Nice. Very on theme.”

A second later and there was a burst of light and a flash of something up ahead as an— absolutely gigantic Florges crossed their path, twirling like a little girl and laughing, before disappearing again. Everything brightened and then faded back to normal, and her laughter echoed distantly.

”Well. Dollars to donuts that’s who is causing this.”

"My mom had one of those growing up." That pokemon had died when he was little, even before his mom had. His memories of the Florgres were faint at best. Other than the ache of pain from missing someone who had been gone a long time, Temp couldn't really provide any answers on what to do. Sorry, kepler brueshaber. [attr="class","thadmain"]“It’s a Fairy-type, right,” Kepler said, trying to suss things out. He pulls a Pokeball off his belt and summons his Poliwrath.

“Poison Jab,” he says, pointing in the direction the Florges went. Now, any Pokemon with half a brain would probably try to question the command given that Kepler was ordering them to attack nothing particular, but Arbalest was a bloodthirsty fuck and had been prepped and ready for combat since METENO, where he’d seen exactly zero fight time and had been simmering since.

So he flies forward with his gloves stained purple as he begins errantly punching shit. Trees, hanging flowers, shapes in the mist, all crushed under the wet squelch of a poison-filled fist.

“This will work eventually, I hope,” Kepler said, cutting off the path in the direction his Poliwrath is punching. He doesn’t see the slip of grass that writhes along the ground to wrap around his ankle until it’s too late and he’s being upended with a squawk, dangling upside down like the sugary tree ornaments.

There was confusion at first as Temp tried to figure out what kepler brueshaber was aiming to do. Just punch the air..?[break][break]

Then it sort of 'clicked' in his mind and Temp perked up. He could help with that![break][break]

"Sludge Wave!"[break][break]

He motioned vaguely in the direction of where the Poliwhirl was aiming. His Tentacruel have him a 'really?' kind of look before rolling her eyes and doing as ordered.[break][break]

Something shrieked just to the left of where the Poliwrath had been punching.[break][break]

Kepler didn't notice the vines and neither did Temp. He only vaguely saw Kepler start to be hauled up when his own ankles were grabbed and he was hauled up to join the other with a yelp.[break][break]

Hanging in the trees, unconscious, was the crew that had went missing.[break][break]

Temp blanched.

[attr="class","thadmain"]Kepler twisted in a slow spin as he dangled upside down. He saw Temp’s face, first, and his own screwed up in confusion as he continued to slowly, slowly rotate… until he saw the bodies. “Oh, fuck!”

The Florges’ screech reverbated as the mist began to spiral like a funnel cloud, whirling faster and faster until the plants and dangling ornaments and humans were beginning to pull in one direction.

“Arbalest!” Kepler yelled, as the wind dragged him away; his breath was plucked away by the force of it.

The Florges appeared, then, bedraggled and droopy and sizzling and angry. She spun her hands and faced down Arbalets and Temp’s Tentacruel with a petal blizzard.
