the change in her expression, no matter how subtle, is noticed by him. it isn't the first time he's been met with fear, not even from someone who would consider a close friend.[break][break]

MATIAS SILPH doesn't come back downstairs. at least not right away. [break][break]annalise takes out her phone and texts Greyson Connors what she had meant to send him before the confrontation: that matias is doing really bad and that she's going to stay with him until Kyle comes. it's still true — it's just missing the breakdown of their friendship that had occurred between her intention and the text she's writing now. [break][break] she scoots to the very corner of the couch when matias does come back, giving him plenty of space to sit. she steals a glance at him, a once-over to see that he's in different clothes, then goes back to being wholly preoccupied with her phone.

the dark shades under his eyes grow darker by the second. even if he's mentally exhausted, he doesn't feel it physically, and so no rest comes for him. he merely sits on the couch and loses himself to whatever flickers on the television.[break][break]

annalise almost forgets he's sitting beside her until he speaks. she stops scrolling, but she doesn't look up from whatever random picture she's landed on. the stillness is enough to show that she's paying attention. [break][break]

their argument had startled it all away. nevertheless, the suggestion has a subconscious effect on the way she leans into the arm of the couch.

annalise looks at him now, studies his face.

she gives him more than breadcrumbs this time, hesitantly wading back into conversation now that there's been a sufficient lull between their confrontation and MATIAS SILPH acting normal again. maybe a full eight hours could keep him normal.[break][break]
