when everyone affirms their status, noah is deaf. the beat of his heart is too much in his ears, and when kyle tells him to care for the shadowy stalker, he takes it as kyle being okay too.[break][break]

he kneels down to face his marshadow. above, his machamp stands guard—but its eyes glide toward the mythical as if to affirm the gloomdweller's choice.[break][break]

he's done this before.

the trial of ho-oh recurs back to him. he has already been judged, and the redemption has already been delivered. the test came in a flash, much like the labyrinth they were thrown at.

he's confident in matias' and penelope's safety, having been thrown together the last time he saw them. noah, too, has been with the resident of the border alongside the cleansing tag he had left him with.

the only threat he has is the shell of his former self— one that ho-oh tried to transition this version of kyle lopez from.

a shadow of his former self faces him in a corridor, which dissipates right away. his core had already been purified by his patron's sacred fire. it's a cheat code in the system, as the influence of ho-oh clears the need for the examinee to pass the conditions of the test.

enlightenment, confession, mastering one's fears...

kyle comes out of the labyrinth as soon as he enters. clarity has always been with him, leaving him stuck as a static character in the main story. he wouldn't be a main character people would root for with his development, and he has long accepted that.

"noah!" he shouts, trying to find his beloved. he switches the smeargle beside him with one that can resonate with his sygna suit before further looking around for clues.

43 stumble into a monochrome labyrinth of fog, an epiphanic prison, together or individually. the only way to escape is by having an epiphany of some kind: enlightenment, confession, mastering one's fears. threats may manifest in the labyrinth that represent each character's guilt, regret, etc.

as noah takes the marshadow's hand in his own, the fog pulls away. like streams of rainwater in some slateport alley, the smoke runs and steals all color.[break][break]

his machamp is quick to shift into the defensive. walls surge upward from the ground, encasing everyone in endless hallways.[break][break]

some pillars rise taller than the rest, and on their hallowed peaks, he sees the silhouettes of shadowy figures.[break][break]

they stand tall. their stares are encased in their umbral shapes. noah makes them out just barely. he sees a PENELOPE LIVY. a MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]

a kyle lopez.[break][break]

inadequacy hardens in his gut. it is an impossible weight akin to that of a silph on a scale. clutching his chest, noah stumbles to a knee, drawing in smoke with every desperate breath.[break][break]

eventually, kyle lopez finds him by the silvered light of a terastallized machamp. several walls have come down, torn apart by fists. the umbral stands for each figure have dissipated, leaving no debris. just smoke. his marshadow and machamp stomp away any foggy wisp left.

noah wipes his eyes with his forearm. "fuck, i hate this place." he is quick to embrace kyle, sniffling and clearing his throat. "know where the others are?"[break][break]
