For all that he did to conceal the glimmer of emotion that slipped from his eye, there was little to be done about Penelope's peering gaze. Whether he liked it or not, she took notice, and whether she liked it or not, it's image stung.

Like a sweeping sadness, Penelope could feel all of her own grivences and thoughts and points of hurt crumble at the vulnerability he shared. For, in some regard, she understood how it felt to question one's own judgement.

Realization struck harder than she would've liked to admit. After a few seconds, a gasp of air is let out.

"That was just a one-time situation," she assured him, fingers tightening around his. The horrors of his admission were something to be tucked away for another conversation on another occasion. For now, Matias' dwindling sanity took precedence. "It was just a moment of weakness - we all have those."

Albeit most people's moments of vulnerability aren't documented as devasting accidents by league officials. Still, she grasped onto her reassurance, using it as the weight she needed to anchor him to her.

For once, her desperate pursuit of power wasn't a topic she felt divulging into. For once, she'd found herself only caring for the person sprawled out in front of her, the one cowering in pain, the one she should've discarded the moment he'd plunged into the mist. For once, she'd found herself where they'd been a month prior, wishing to discard all sense of responsibility all for the chance to provide some level of support to his harrowing words.

Matias had a talent for robbing Penelope of her own breath. Again, his words wrapped her up in a tight blanket of surprise, and again she'd fallen for its grasp, forgoing another piece of herself to console someone who'd already made it clear he sought no help from her.
