And that was damnest part. For all that wrung up inside her whenever he neared her; for all the shit she'd spun in desperation to feel something in his absence; for all that she'd already sacrificed up to that moment, she couldn't place words to this web of fickle emotions.

It should've ended then and there. With him proclaiming his supposed feelings and Penelope solidifying the fact that, despite what he thought, his actions betrayed his confession.

There, between the thick rolls of mist, it should've ended with silent heartbreak and begrudging resolve.

But it didn't. Because of course it didn't.

Instead, Penelope found herself caught up in the web of his words.
