ROCKET had been pushed back as close to the rift as was feasibly comfortable. Anymore, and the LEAGUE might be able to overtake their forces and rush into Ultra Deep Sea. That was not an option.[break][break]

"There's a group flanking us to your left!" Barnaby called out to Cillian Quinn, his voice amplified over the communication device in his ear. [break][break]

"Ice Beam! Build up a wall to hold them back!" He ordered his GLASTRIER, whose exceptionable ability with Ice-type attacks made it the perfect defense in this moment. Its frozen barriers weren't impenetrable, but it would take time for LEAGUE officers to get through.

Back safe behind Rocket lines, Gavin offers only a curt nod in thanks. There will be time for proper gratitude later, when they survive this.[break][break]

Noting the icy wall put in place by Barnaby's Glastrier, Gavin calls out his Sandslash.[break][break]

Two clicks of his tongue and a sharp hand gesture sets up a HAILSTORM, ensuring the icy wall would not suffer in Hoenn's warming climate.

After several trips into the Ultra Wild by this point, Barnaby felt that he and Cillian Quinn worked well together. He’d seen many of the underboss’ Shadow Pokémon dominate on the battlefield - enough that he expected the ALLY SWITCH with his DHELMISE. There was no doubting Gavin’s strength, so Barnaby knew not to worry about him dealing with the group at their flank.[break][break]

He had his own problems to contend with, anyway.[break][break]

More LEAGUE combatants surged into the large cavern, illuminated by the eerie glow of the rift and the various Pokémon attacks blooming light onto the stone walls. One of them peeled off from the rest, unbeknownst to Barnaby, and used his KADABRA to teleport closer.[break][break]

“Stand down!” The officer bellowed, pointing a gun just feet away from the ROCKET admin.[break][break]

Barnaby froze in place.

Calculations are made in the space it takes to draw a sharp breath. The officer hasn't noticed Gavin, shrouded by MIASMA and shadow. He hasn't noticed the Sandslash, blending into the storm of hail.[break][break]

Catching the admin's eye, Gavin nods.[break][break]

Go with it, he mouths.[break][break]

Regardless of what Barnaby does, Gavin orders his Sandslash with a silent hand signal, disposing even of his infamous clicking and whistling in a bid to remain concealed until the right moment. The signal's meaning?[break][break]

PROTECT.[break][break]

It lunges between Barnaby and the officer; should the gun go off, it would glance uselessly off the dark spines of the icy shrew.[break][break]

Gavin, meanwhile, draws his own gun with supernatural speed and fires toward the offending officer, aiming for the chest.

He goes with it.[break][break]

Barnaby freezes for a moment, calculating, before his hands rise palm-out into the air. To the LEAGUE officer is looks like surrender, but to his KADABRA - who uses its telepathy to probe the admin's thoughts - it looks like a trap. It's eyes glow purple as it readies a psychic attack, which it's trainer trusts at face value. They'd done this before.[break][break]

The officer cocks his gun and pulls the trigger without hesitation.[break][break]

Without flinching, the chink! of a bullet ricocheting off of SANDSLASH's protective shielding signals Barnaby to act. Cillian Quinn had gotten there in time, as the admin knew he would.[break][break]

Several things happened next within the span of a few seconds: the underboss' bullets hit the enemy combatant square in the chest; he stumbles backwards, but is saved by his bullet-proof vest; the KADABRA is ready to scramble Barnaby's brain with PSYCHIC.[break][break]

But then an enraged whinny splits the frigid air. GLASTIER gallops from the darkness, slamming into KADABRA with LASH OUT and sending the Psi Pokémon flying forward - KO'd.[break][break]

Not missing a beat, Barnaby's beloved steed then turns on the LEAGUE officer. He tries to scramble and grab the gun that had fallen from his hands, but is inevitably trampled under the hooves of the enraged GLASTRIER.

Though the vest is frustrating, the shot still serves its purpose in disabling the officer long enough for the two Rockets to gain the upper hand. Or, rather, for BARNABY FINCH's GLASTRIER to do so.[break][break]

Gavin watches in awe as the swift steed erupts from the shadows to toss the Kadabra aside like a child's doll, soon running down its master with frozen hooves. No vest could protect from being crushed beneath the Glastrier's weight, and the sound of breaking bones echoes in the ensuing quiet.[break][break]

Gavin's heart thuds painfully in a too-tight chest.[break][break]

It had been a split second decision to intercept, and it could've cost the admin his life.[break][break]

But it didn't, he reminds himself, letting out the breath he'd been holding as he steps from the shadows of his MIASMA. He curls his hands to hide their tremble.[break][break]

"That's one hell of a horse," he laughs, strained. "You all right, Bee?"[break][break]

Grumbling, Gavin's Sandslash takes out excess FRUSTRATION on the stony floor of the cave, steel claws leaving gouges in the rock.

There was nothing quite like cheating death. [break][break]

Adrenaline pumped through Barnaby’s body, making his heart race and goading a triumphant smile to his lips. Not that Cillian Quinn would see this behind the admin’s mask; what would register, however, was the relief in his subordinate’s voice. [break][break]

“Yeah, thanks to you.” Raising a hand, Barnaby clapped Gavin appreciatively on the shoulder. “Your quick thinking saved me.”[break][break]

A sudden, frosty pressure on his back made the admin chuckle. It was an odd sound, distorted by the device in his mask. [break][break]

“Yes, thanks to you too, you ferocious beast.” GLASTRIER whinnied again, this time in a much more obviously pleasant tone. It also shook its body, relieving the pressures of battle - and slinging blood onto both Barnaby and Gavin’s SANDSLASH. Whoops.

Barnaby might feel Gavin's shoulder tense beneath the contact, though the visual warning of movement prevents the admin from meeting the rebuke of Gavin's fist. He relaxes after a moment, as if his brain had taken a moment to process the interaction as friendly.[break][break]

He allows the admin to believe the better of him, choosing not to admit how instinctual the choice had been.[break][break]

It could have gone worse. But it hadn't.[break][break]

"We should search him."[break][break]

Gavin kneels next to the body, checks for a pulse. Finding none, he proceeds to search through the man's pockets and person.[break][break]

"Comms are up." He smirks over at Barnaby. "Any good at mimicking voices with that mask?"[break][break]

He holds up the officer's earpiece, currently switched off.[break][break]

Among the supplies, he also finds a few SCATTERBANGS and STICKY GLOBS.[break][break]

"Could have some fun with these."

He feels the tension, registers a second too late that it might have been too familiar an action to take with Underboss Merlino. [break][break]

Still, he figured Gavin would know it was a simple gesture of goodwill. Of trust.[break][break]

"Any good?" Barnaby replied, a mischievous smirk in his tone. "You're looking at a theatrical expert." Acting was part of his job, after all.[break][break]

After a slight cough to clear his voice, the admin took the earpiece and flipped it on, saying curtly, "Shots fired near the rift. Repeat, shots fired. There's at least one officer down, maybe more. Backup requested."[break][break]

He cut off the device and lowered his arm.[break][break]

"We should have enough time to set up an ambush before they arrive. Funnel them here," Barnaby gestured to a narrowed point within the cavern. "And have a little fun with those scatterbangs and sticky globs."

Tension fades after Gavin's mind has been given a moment to process, and a flicker of relief over an otherwise stoic countenance betrays that the overreaction might've been more to do with trauma than simple discomfort.[break][break]

The rest of that discomfort fades with a laugh.[break][break]

"All yours, then."[break][break]

Gavin could pull a basic con, but he was no expert.[break][break]

His eyes gleam in the dim of the cave. "I have these, too."

POISON BARBS are held up with gloved hands. Crossing over to the narrow funnel that the admin had indicated, Gavin scatters them along the path. Small, unassuming. They'd be in a rush to saved their downed officer, likely not looking out for the subtle barbs.

Handing off half of the Scatterbangs and Sticky Globs, Gavin returns his Sandslash and has Dhelmise disappear into its PHANTOM FORCE.

"My Dhelmise will block the tunnel with SHADOW HOLD once they're all inside. They'll have nowhere to run but into our trap."

“Perfection.” They had the trifecta of ambush equipment - sticky globs, scatterbangs, and poison barbs. Plus the underboss’ powerful Shadow Pokemon. Everything was falling into place.[break][break]

“We can use the scatterbangs to startle them into the poison barbs.” Barnaby suggested, walking with Cillian Quinn as they began to lay their trap. “Then when they’re injured and taken off-guard, subdue them with the sticky globs.”[break][break]
