he couldn't chase Felix Gallagher after their little bout. not as soon as derek would have liked to, anyway. quite some time had lapsed since, and now the INTERDREAM ZONE was encroaching on more and more of this place.

when derek happens upon it, he can't help but notice a girl thinking it wise to approach the dreamy miasma. and it seemed this face was a familiar one at that.

She'd thought she was alone! Caught by surprise Luka whirls around, pink curls drifting around her shoulders and nearly blending in with the mist behind her. Anything could take shape in the fog, and it's hard to tell the difference between real and imaginary. Being wary is simply prudent.[break][break]

But the familiar shape of DEREK HOFFMAN is outside the interdream zone, which means he's probably safe. Even so, when he's within arms length she steps forwards, reaches up, and pinches his cheek— just to make sure.[break][break]

"I could ask you the same thing," she says with a rueful smile, and an excellent side-step of his question. "I wanted to investigate the dream zone a little bit...there's something in it that I might be looking for."[break][break]

Surprise and gratitude mingle on Luka's face in equal measure, though it's the latter that becomes more apparent when she smiles at him. "It could be dangerous," she says unnecessarily; Derek is certainly more than aware, and definitely better equipped to handle any potential danger than she is.[break][break]

"But I appreciate it, really. Um..." She peers again into the interdream zone, the pink and purple fog that looks so similar to her Musharna's dream mist, but lacks any of it's familiar warmth. "I'm not really sure how to track anything down though, so I guess we should just...jump in?"

"yeah." derek starts, inching closer to the mists of the interdream. "i know." if it weren't one thing, it was another. this just happened to be something derek was familiar with. more or less...

"don't mention it." for all they knew, derek would be the one needing help once of the two of them were inside. "i'm jumping now."

it was more of a leap, but derek disappeared into the mist all the same. once on the other side, it becomes quite clear that, yes, this is going to be dangerous. one of the paradox pokemon (flutter mane) appear to inhabit this portion of the interdream.

"that's one really weird misdreavus." assuming he could even call it that. the thing looks powerful, though, prompting derek to let loose his charizard and call upon it's mega-evolved form. the gmax wildfire that follows isn't enough to force it away just yet.

Derek takes the plunge first, but Luka is quick to follow. For a few moments the haze of the interdream zone is disorienting, but she's been in it enough that she knows what to expect.[break][break]

Unfortunately, what she can expect is a treacherous place that blurs dreams and reality, with unkown dangers lurking amidst the fog. Although Luka notices the bizarre Misdreavus as soon as it appears overhead, Derek is the one who acts first— quicky and offensively.[break][break]

"W-what are you doing?!" she exclaims, absolutely flabbergasted. "The poor thing hasn't even done anything to us yet!"[break][break]

But their sudden aggression has made it angry. Just as the ferocious flames reach the Misdreavus it shrieks and dives in, approaching at an alarming speed before suddenly vanishing. Luka blinks, then searches around wildly for the creature to no avail.[break][break]

"Where did—" Just before she can ask it appears again, ramming into the Charizard with a full-throttle Phantom force. Another ghostly shriek echoes around them as Luka releases her Musharna, trying her best to stop the fight before it escalates further. "Use hypnosis!" she shouts, and can only pray that her little tapir's spell will actually work on their target.

"whaddya mean?" derek's voice raises itself to be heard over the paradox pokemon's wailing. "i'm dealing with this thing!" after everything he's seen in these places. after watching anna get kidnapped with a knife held to her neck. he'd finally decided to stop waiting for some reason or motive.

if it didn't belong to a league trainer, it was a threat. and derek wouldn't be taking any chances. hopefully luka would understand, should he get the chance to explain.

although perhaps the desperation in his voice might spell it out. regardless, the lingering flames of the prior attack would be fanned by the hurricane that followed up. derek couldn't tell if luka's hypnosis had worked, but the horrid shrieks that thing made had finally stopped. "sorry... that wasn't what you were looking for, was it?"

Luka understands his reasoning, but that doesn't mean she likes it. Shoot first, ask questions later has never been her style. If she was thinking more clearly she might be more appreciative that Derek is just trying to protect her, but she hates the thought that it comes at the expense of another innocent creature.[break][break]

Innocent might not be the word others would use, but hasn't anyone taken the time to consider that these bizarre new Pokemon are just as frightend by all of this as they are?[break][break]

The paradox Misdreavus, caught up in a hurricane laced with Ume's hypnosis, falls silent a moment later. Once the dust clears it's ghostly form remains hovering in the air, clearly injured but also fast asleep.[break][break]

"No," Luka says quietly, turning away from the smouldering creature in front of them, "It isn't."[break][break]

She takes a moment to try and get her bearings, though that's all but impossible amidst the oppressive fog all around them. The lunar wing around her neck doesn't seem to be responding to anything either, though that doesn't mean much. It's not like it's ever signaled for Cresselia before.[break][break]

"B-but, um, thank you! I don't want it to seem like...I-I appreciate you looking out for me. I'm just tired of fighting all the time, that's all."

"oh..." derek finally considers luka's stance. and though he doesn't agree, the dissonance isn't enough to debate. he's just glad the screwy looking misdreavus wasn't her target.

rather than ruin his image any further, he'd allow luka to lead. after all, her way attracted less attention. who knew if there were any members of team rocket nearby that heard their scuffle.

"so... will you know when you've found it?" there wasn't much information to go on, but these mists had a way about them. derek wanted to have faith in luka's ability to recognize whatever it was. that they wouldn't end up lost in here searching for something she wasn't sure existed.

Luka's well aware that her opinion is an unpopular one, especially in a place like this. And she too doesn't have the will to argue. It doesn't mean they can't work together, and it doesn't mean she thinks of Derek any differently.[break][break]

The League is filled with people from all walks of life after all. If she thought of everything in absolutes and only valued her own opinions, would that really make her any different from the Rockets they're fighting against?[break][break]

"Yeah," she confirms, tossing her hair back and offering Derek a smile, "I think we'll both know, so don't worry about that. It's, um..."[break][break]

She pauses, biting her lip. She'd like to tell Derek exactly what she's looking for, but possessing the lunar wing doesn't come without it's share of danger. Lulu Flint is still after them, and she doesn't want to put her companion in unnecessary peril. But Derek is her friend (she thinks), a former gym leader, a skilled battler. She can trust him, can't she?[break][break]

the notion that he'd be able to recognize it immediately meant she must've been after something pretty significant. derek's thoughts linger upon his own search, which causes the interdream to pull on his obsession in the form of a loud caterwaul booming from somewhere within the mist. a sound derek knew to belong to registeel.

the sound is alarming at first, but he knows better now. there's no trusting your senses in this place. it's just a reminder of his latest obsession.

"yeah." even so, the ranger observes the mists carefully. who knew if the thing making that sound would decide to make some kind of appearance? even if it was a dreamt up fraud, that didn't it wasn't technically there in some sense.

"you can trust me." he didn't have plans for the information. it just seemed that it would be much easier to help luka if he wasn't left in the dark. as the saying goes... what happens in the interdream, stays in the interdream.

Though the strange mechanical boom of a registeel might be familiar to Derek, Luka's never heard it before. It echoes eerily through the mists and she stops where she stands, peering nervously around.[break][break]

Nothing can be trusted in the interdream zone but as that weird misdreavus had just proven, not everything here is intangible either. Whatever had made that sound might be just as dangerous. The fact that nothing has appeared yet only makes her more wary and alarmed.[break][break]

"Sorry, I—" She wants to tell him but paranoia surges into her veins instead. Without realizing it, Luka has reached out to grab Derek's arm, using him as an anchor. "W-what was I saying? This place sucks. Y-you heard that thing, right? Do you think there's something else out there?"

"i did." realizing the moment filled luka with unease, he allows her to cling to his arm. even offers a reassuring pat to the shoulder. "it's my doing. well... sort of." though his eyes linger along the edge of what could be seen, his posture relaxes itself after a few passing moments of quiet.

”You think so? Mmm…” Honestly, she isn’t sure. The interdream zone seems capable of dredging up the most terrible of things from one’s own head, so to impose limits on it seems silly. Then again, it’s not like Luka understands this place better than anyone else. Derek might just be right.[break][break]

”And, um, yeah. I-it is.” she confirms with a sheepish smile. ”I know this isn’t really the time or place to be looking for something- I mean it seems really selfish, right? But, um….I saw Cresselia in the interdream zone once before,” she admits. ”And I have this, erm…a feather, from the last time I saw her.”[break][break]
Those circumstances had been far different, and so far impossible to replicate. But the memories are still fresh. [break][break]
As though the interdream zone can read her thoughts, a body seems to materialize in the mist as they continue to walk. A young girl, crumpled on the ground- her brown hair is in pigtails but her eyes are wide open, and their color is the exact same as Luka’s. She shudders and makes an abrupt u-turn, pulling Derek away.[break][break]

She tries to pretend the apparition isn’t there and fills the air with idle chatter instead. ”Is it a pokemon too? The thing that made that noise, I mean.”
