He's speaking but his words are muted. You can't understand them. For whatever reason, it's like the whole world's had a damper placed over it.
But you read that last thing he said on his lips...
"I'm dead...?"You can hear it, rushing in your ears. The sound of blood. A throbbing sensation in your head. It's painful, but it's undoubtedly there. Your heart is still beating, pushing that stuff through your veins. It's running through you, ice-cold. Making you shiver.
"No... no, you're wrong..."This isn't that man. This is someone or something else. Steel eyes, they look at you with that tender, handsome smile, telling you everything's alright one moment. But then, that hardened look, betraying a defiant beast...
Whatever this is, it's not Navy. He couldn't ever bear to bring himself to look at you like that.
You blink, and the shape of something else is revealed. You can hardly make its composition out through a translucent pearlescent membrane, mass of arms and legs with no discernible shape, wreathed its many appendages around you. Holding you so close. Skin that feels like jelly, cold to the touch.
It looms over you, growing closer all the while.
"Wh-what're... w-wait, no... no, don't... no, please... o-oww... owwwww, it huuurts...!"That image is seared into your brain, though it's gone in an instant.
It's gone, but the damage remains. You're gasping like a fish out of water, opening your jaw to scream but nothing comes out. Your entire body's on fire, and your skin... your skin is covered in slime, you've got to get it off.
Clawing at your arms, hysterics, a cold fever. You're left in a state of panic. You have to get it off you before it does something worse. There's something bad coming if you don't get it off. But it's not coming off. Even as you scratch so hard you start to bleed. With every heartbeat echoing around in your hollow head, it keeps coming back.
It keeps leaking, out of your skin...
Why... why... why why why why whywhywhywhy...You almost don't recognize that man as you look back up at him.
Ten years gone, a lifetime wasted. He's just like you remember, and instantly, you lose your voice. You're a child again, being judged by his strict gaze.
A good girl doesn't talk back. A good girl does as she's told. A good girl behaves well, carries herself with pride. A good girl helps others in need. A good girl always keeps to her manners. A good girl--
He'll never acknowledge you as more than a transaction. He weighs the cost and benefits in his head. And then, he just turns away, as your heart breaks.
But you need his help! You need it!
"D-daddy...!!"It's not an investment he's willing to make. This is a man who would sell the world, let alone one daughter of his by some one-night stand. He's got other ventures.
You're just
red on the ledger, a loss.
That's all you've ever been to him.
