The sound of that name softens Cillian's stern countenance, a fondness kindling deep and warming eyes of amber.[break][break]

"That's him," he confirms. "You've already met, then?"[break][break]

Kouji Matsubara seems thrilled at the prospect of another brawler, and he might notice the way Cillian goes tense when he immediately makes to get to his feet. It hadn't been an invitation to fight, and Cillian was in no mood, but thankfully the eager Rocket seems to get a grip on himself.[break][break]

"It's our favourite past-time," he says idly, relaxing.[break][break]

To them, beating the shit out of each other was foreplay.[break][break]

He considers the offer of a Pokémon battle with a frown. "My Pokémon don't tend to battle for sport."[break][break]

Not his shadows, anyways. They were trained to kill. But they could be ordered to hold back, when they were sparring with each other or, recently, with Tempest Quinn and his team.[break][break]

"I wouldn't go easy."[break][break]

What he means is I'd crush you.

”So you’re his husband, Cil?” Kouji hadn’t read any notes that went out, but at the same time, he wasn’t the kind to pay attention to information. It was then he reconciled the information that he had heard from both sides.

And that was also the reason why he had asked, that meeting, everything that Tempest Quinn had taught him.

”I don’t want you to go easy. Crush me if you need to, better than dying out there, right?” He said with a smirk, whether it came to the sparring here, or fighting with their pokemon.

”I love a good fight, and my pokemon are even more crazy about it, crush ‘em, and they’ll just come back happier and stronger.” But at the same time, that wasn’t completely true.

Cillian laughs — a deep, rich laugh that's edged with the roughness of a smoker's lungs.[break][break]

"He's the only reason I went to the medbay."[break][break]

The underboss would've sooner nursed his injuries and his wounded pride at home, away from prying eyes. But Tempest Quinn had correctly insisted that his injuries were not the sort that should be patched up in their bathroom, and had all but bullied his husband into proper treatment. Cillian loved him for it, even if he'd raised a stink at the time.[break][break]

"Short for Cillian," he clarifies, confirming.[break][break]

He folds his arms over his chest, ignoring the pain that radiates through his right with the motion.[break][break]

"No one likes to lose," he agrees. "But you'll lose often if you go around breaking your team against Avatars and the Elite. Might be you'll lose to one that isn't on your side."[break][break]

Cillian wouldn't kill a grunt that lost to him, but a League officer might arrest him or worse.[break][break]

"What I'm saying is, train smarter as well as harder."

Kouji found his expression stalling for a second before he began to chuckle again, there was something to all of it.

In a way, it was a surprising interaction with the man that was Gavi-, Cillian, the man was something else in a lot of ways. There were the aspects that made Kouji respect him, there were the parts that made him want to fight the man more, to break blood with this man. But at the same time, he was surprisingly human.

”I’m tryna do so…Planning to.” He hadn’t gotten to train yet, but he wanted to. ”Can’t figure out how to break a man without fighting ‘em, and second best is to fight someone like ‘em.”
[break][break]
”Well, I wanna fight strong guys, but I’ve got my missions to do first. Whenever they come around again, gotta get healthy again.” He said as he raised his arm, tucked in a cast, his entire body felt heavy, he had to recover.

”I’ll see about adding ya and Tempest to my sparring list, I reckon after our win we’ll all be busy.” He said with a fake pomposity that faded far too quickly, his voice broke into chuckles.

”Y’know, I’m glad you’re one of my bosses.” He had a lot of thoughts, a lot of reasons, a lot of experiences in the last few days, but more than all of that. ”I was worried we had a buncha sofites, but you crashed down on me hard. A strong top means that the bottom can be stronger too.”

"Yes," Cillian agrees of recovery, and speaking from experience adds, "Don't push it as soon as you think you're fine. Get clearance from a doctor and make sure you're fine, before you start again."[break][break]

He'd learned as much the hard way. Tempest Quinn had been instrumental in teaching him the importance of rest when building strength, rather than using Kanto's methods of throwing himself into the fire until it ceased to burn him.[break][break]

"And you can learn a surprising amount by studying those you mean to fight." He expects Kouji Matsubara to be more a man of action. "Learn to spot their weaknesses to be exploited later."[break][break]

All that said, a good fight was fun practice.[break][break]

"Feel free," he says, chuckling at the other man's tone. "I am quite busy, as you'd imagine, but I always find time to train."[break][break]

The compliment leaves him feeling strange, but not in a bad way. He's not used to genuine compliments, still. So he focuses on generals, rather than on himself.

"None of the top brass are soft," he assures him, speaking also of declan walsh, THEO BECKETT, and Elisabeth Fiorelli. "Walsh and Beckett are from Kanto, like myself. And Fiorelli is an incredible woman. I find the soft do not last long in Rocket."[break][break]

He scowls, a storm in his gaze suggesting deeper meaning.

”Aye aye, Sir.” He said as he looked himself over, he still felt heavy, and there were injuries that he hadn’t seen; all of them. ”That’s gonna take a while, wonder if I should get Meowscarada working overtime…” He muttered to himself, though it was loud enough to hear.

It was an annoying difference between humans and pokemon, were he one, perhaps he’d be able to just walk this away after a couple heal pulses, or pollen puffs.

Still, Kouji made sure to listen to the wisdom that Cillian was bestowing upon him, words worth listening to. He wanted to win, he didn’t want to feel this way again, he didn’t want to be a loser on the winning side.

”Deserters huh?” Kouji said with a slight raise in his eyebrows as he guessed at what had caused the displeasure to become apparent on the man’s face. ”We can kill those softies whenever they show their faces.” His tone was even, simple, straight forward.

”If people see that softies that leave die, softies don’t last, and all the guys at the top ain’t softies, well, they’ll either die at some point, or stop being soft.” Yet, he couldn’t hide the smirk at knowing none of those at the upper end of Rocket were soft.

”If you’re ever too busy to deal with a deserter, send ‘em my way. It’s a bit of a hobby of mine.”
