A sickle-shaped moon hung high against the black veil of night. Only the soft chirping of Bug-type Pokémon filled the air along the route outside Verdanturf Town. Farmland stretched in all directions, with the occasional farmhouse, barn, or shed dotting the landscape.[break][break]

Zev stood at the side of the road, waiting for his Noctowl to return. The owl had taken wing to search for his master's prey among the rows and rows of berry plants.[break][break]

The target in question was one of the many defectors after the clash in November who had evaded Team Rocket's pursuit thus far. But their luck would end tonight.[break][break]

His eyes on the sky, Zev spotted a shadow against the darkness as his Noctowl returned, hooting softly.[break][break]

"We've found them," the hitman told his associate who'd been waiting with him. "Ready to go?"

Mint watched for the bird, and then at his companion. He wasn't all that familiar with fellow Beast Harcourt, but he'd heard positive enough things from jayden cross . He hadn't gotten that good of a read on him from DISSEMINATE and PROJECT URIEL meetings, but those weren't very good places for that either. It was crowded, fast paced. Information and discussion making it hard to track more than what was going on right in front of you. [break][break]

He knew of the defector hunting. A task dropped on all of their plates as beasts, but Mint's research and data collection had taken him far away from this specific job. So when the opportunity to tag along crops up, he goes. Because slacking off on one area while strengthening another might as well just be self sabotage. [break][break]

He's familiar with the process. A stake out, an interrogation, and an execution. The last one having been with Cillian Quinn , though unable to commit to the role of firing squad. Gav-...Cillian had take that burden from him. Cacio had finished the job, disposing of the body. He kept the Luxray secured at his hip. Surely, he'd be pleased to help later.

"Sure, boss." he said, as a little Spinarak perches itself on his shoulder. "It's just one guy, right?" he asked after a moment. "They didn't run with friends- or a group?" Panic had the tendency to spread and infect.

"Just one, at least according to our intel." And considering Mint's role in gathering that intel, Zev expected it to be solid.[break][break]

They walked along the edge of the berry field, following the Noctowl as he flew low to the ground. Eventually, however, he stopped, climbing higher and veering into the field itself. Zev noted the row his bird had stopped at and trudged over.[break][break]

Between the berry plants, there was only darkness.[break][break]

Zev drew his knife, its black blade curving at the tip. He didn't often use it, but in this case, his instincts told him he'd need it.[break][break]

Silently, he entered the field.

He nodded. "No change then." The risk was mitigated, slightly. Nothing was ever 100% certain, and when it came to information the fresher it was the better. Things could change so quickly without a steady stream of updates. [break][break]

Mint followed along as the Noctowl narrowed down their search area. He does his best to step quietly. His eyes flicker down every so often to keep himself from tripping on a tangle of berries.

He caught a glimpse of metal by his side and reached into his own side for a weapon. His spider skittered off his body and into the shadows. Mint flanks left of Zev after waiting to catch his eye and gesturing. [break][break]

The wind rustles the berry crop, fluttering leaves and shaking flowers. The air is hot and the smell of rotting sweetness permeates the deeper they venture. And yet, it's almost too quiet. The sound of bug types is absent and aside from Zev's Noctowl he doesn't hear any of the usual nocturnal species. Almost as if the fields themselves understand the purpose of the two Beasts here, and fear it. [break][break]

A violent shaking and a loud thump of a body hitting the dirt jump starts his heart. He angles himself towards the source and sprints before Zev can leave him in the dust.

Zev's Noctowl found the target first. A predator on silent wings, he descended. The SKY ATTACK caught its victim by complete surprise. Zev honed in on the rustle of berry plants and the thump of a body hitting the dirt. He snapped into action, surging toward the sound.[break][break]

Noctowl rose into the black sky once more as Zev and Mint converged. A spooked and bloody body lay between them, still alive. The man jumped upon seeing them and scrambled backward, shouting.[break][break]

They had to silence him.[break][break]

Zev moved, closing the gap. Reaching down, he grabbed for the defector's dirt-smeared shirt with his free hand, his knife hand ready.[break][break]

But the man was slippery. He rolled aside and onto his feet, then dashed away between the rows of berry bushes. Zev caught the way he limped, however; Noctowl had done enough damage that following the target's trail would not be difficult.[break][break]

Zev gestured to Mint with his knife pointed after the fleeing man, before giving chase at a brisk pace. Above, Noctowl circled, watching.

Zev dives in to grab and Mint looks forward ready to jump in if he managed to dodge. But he miscalculates how hard a fall the target will take and they slip through his fingers. They break and trample through berries, knocking them over and snapping young stalks. The screams echo in the night and he takes off at Zev's instruction. [break][break]

"Charlie, stun them." he ordered, as the little Spinarak chirped, further ahead. He heard another chirp and abruptly slowed, gesturing at the other Beast. "Watch out-" Another cry of pain comes out, but no fall. Not yet. He tried to point out the mess of metallic purple silk hanging delicately a few feet ahead. It's easy enough to go around, but the a huge clump of TOXIC THREAD prepared hastily as a trap seemed to be missing. [break][break]

"Learned that from another Beast." he added, voice low in the comms as he thought about his last hurrah with oscar clayton . The Spinarak scurries into view, before scurrying off again, tracking their prey who hissed and groaned, seemingly loosing energy to scream as loud as before. She doesn't have him, but at least now it'd be easier to deal with them.

The use of TOXIC THREAD was smart. Impressed, Zev nodded at Mint before continuing the pursuit, making sure to skirt around the remnants of the webbing. "Good tactic."[break][break]

Tracking the target at this point was almost a comical effort. The Beasts merely had to follow the trail of crushed berry plants, poisoned silk, and blood splatters. When the noise of his flight finally stopped, Zev walked over to the gasping, quaking man.[break][break]

In a last ditch effort to defend himself, their prey opened a Pokéball. A Mabosstiff emerged in a flash of light and lunged at Zev, snarling, jaws wide to BITE the assassin. Instinctively, Zev raised his knife to defend himself.

He's still noisy, but at least this could feasibly sound more like a pokemon after a bad fight. Even still, best not to linger. An invisible clock seemed to be counting down the minutes, as as they circle their target he gives a glance around for any type of getaway method or other hidden person. [break][break]

The flash of a pokeball opening pulls him back and his partner is at his feet once more. As the Mabostiff lunges towards Zev, teeth bared despite the risk of a dagger, the little Spinarak launches herself out of the shadows and onto it's back, biting into the dark type with LEECH LIFE. [break][break]

Mint pushes ahead, rushing for the master instead, the only real person here with authority to call off the dog pokemon. "They die with you-" comes out, half a warning as the man crawled onto his knees, gurgling and wheezing. He kicks their ass, literally, letting gravity take over as he tried to detain the defector. They squirm, but it's weak as Mint adds force to his pin, sitting on the back, one hand on the neck pressing his face into damp dirt. "Ghost-" he doesn't turn, listening to the skirmish behind himself, trying to find any other threads on their person. "You ok?"

Zev's blade slashed the Mabosstiff's face before the Pokémon's teeth could rip through his skin. The dog jerked back, howling in pain. As the Spinarak drew on the Dark-type's health with LEECH LIFE, Zev's Noctowl descended, slamming into the Mabosstiff with STEEL WING.[break][break]

"I'm good," Zev said, though his heart thudded rapidly in his chest with the adrenaline rush. He stepped away from the Pokémon battle. In moments, it was over, with the Boss Pokémon lying still in the dirt.[break][break]

Its owner cried out, but the noise was muffled by the way Mint pressed the man's face into the ground.[break][break]

"What are you waiting for?" Zev asked the other Beast. Mint had pinned the man; all that was left was the killing blow.

Luckily, he'd been right about the other Beast being taken care of. Whether through his own hands or their pokemon's. Still, it seemed lie ka courtesy after risking grievous injury. And Mint did carry extra first aid supplies for more manageable wounds. [break][break]

Before he can answer, the question of killing them comes up and he looks back at his defector. He tried to muster up the same anger he had in the Silent Icelands. The single purposed hate that had pushed him to the bring, but not for Bucatini. Not in the wake of her loss. But for Rocket. "I guess I wanted him to suffer a bit more." he countered as he lifted his own dagger. [break][break]

He thoughts swirl as they wheeze and beg mercy, poison and blood loss making quick work of them already. But it was Mint's blow that would put them out of their misery. They can't risk leaving him there to survive, and it probably wouldn't be the best first...second....third??? impression either. Despite the shivers down his spine and the dryness in his mouth he plunges down on the ex Rocket's back. A scream is muffled as he shoves their mouth into the dirt. At least he didn't have to look in their eyes as they died. He does it again, plunging and lifting. Crimson mixes with crushed berries and flattened leaves. The struggling becomes wild, an attempt to bunk him off in the final throws of life. And then- it stopped just as abruptly, and Mint stood up. He swallowed feeling the remnant shivers of the night. [break][break]

He caps off the act by setting it aside to ruminate on later, turning back to his companion as he wiped the blade on the body's shirt. "So, regroup back in the bunker and then...milkshakes?" there's always a 24/7 diner open.
