Slither Wing.

That's the name of that insect you caught in the Ultra Deep Sea. Or, at least, that's what the boffins from Rocket are calling it. Frankly, it seems a little more like a new Volcarona evolution to you, but they insisted that wasn't the case. According to them, it's some kind of Pokemon from an alternate dimension, whose existence is not natural, but instead, the result of mutation caused by public imagination which came from archetypes of thought based on the unknown past and the shifting future that--

--Okay look, to be entirely honest, you didn't understand shit. After about the fifth minute of the lecture, you just gave up and tuned the rest of it out. To keep a long, confusing, and agonisingly boring story short, the gist of it is thus: There's something special about this bug, and the Rocket scientists want you to study it. Naturally, you've been slacking on that front, but not without reason. You have no idea where to even begin with "researching" it, and besides, you're still banged up to hell, no thanks in small part to Slither Wing itself. Why risk aggravating your injuries? Better to wait for your broken ribs to finish properly mending before you commit yourself to any hard work. You've earned a break.

And you would've taken one, if it weren't for one little complication with the name of Michael Navidson.

That fucker. The one with the Tyranitar. That's him! When you saw him on the TV, you couldn't believe it. At first, you just convinced yourself that you'd imagined it, but then you saw it a second time, then a third, then a fourth. Sure enough, it was the same man you'd fought to a dubious draw in that tunnel was some kind of private detective, and he just so happened to be advertising his agency. He was even so kind to give you the full address of his office.

Suddenly, today seemed like it was going to be a very interesting day for you...

Another day, another Skitty. Another night in a city that insists you can sleep when you’re dead. Navy’s ready to go back to his apartment, lock up, and go curl up with some bad television shows. Life’s good. He’s found his center. He’s happy for the first time in a long time. is out doing her own job, living her own life. She’s taking well to the business. That, too, makes him happy.[break][break]
I’ll pencil you in for tomorrow.” Navy says to a woman over the phone with a yawn and a wave she cannot see. Afterwards, he hears the line go dead, hangs up, and puts his feet up. Business hours end soon. Fifteen more minutes and he’s out of here. Nominally, there’s nothing keeping him around. It’s a self-ran business. He doesn’t have to be here if he doesn’t wanna be here.[break][break]
But there’s always, always that distinct possibility that someone will walk through the door. A hard-faced man, the wrong kind of woman, the case that makes or breaks him. Despite what he’s slowly starting to realize about himself, he is still nothing but a warrior masquerading as a detective – a warrior seeking proper challenge. The stuff you only get from the truly desperate. It’s why these battles between the League and Rocket draw him like a fly to honey.[break][break]
Just fifteen minutes. He gets up to grab himself a soda from the fridge. It’s a bad habit, drinking this stuff, but he’s got all the weight off. A little carbonated sugar water won’t kill him.

You don't like the feeling of wearing a mask over your face. There's something uncanny about it that you can't rightly describe, a feeling that evades your ability to understand it. If you could have your way, you'd go without it, but even you're not stupid enough to try that. For something as reckless as this, obscurity is a blessing.

Besides, you need to wear it. After all, he won't recognise your true face. He doesn't know who Shred Zeppelin is. All he knows is this crude and mawkish visage, and that it belongs to the member of Team Rocket he fought in another world.

...It occurs to you, as the setting sun highlights the silhouette of his office in shades of orange and purple, that he might not even remember who you are. He might just think you're another one of the many unassuming grunts that he happened to encounter on that day. You find that thought strangely bittersweet, though you have no reason to. Even though you view him as some kind of great rival, you've only fought him once. Today will only be the second time you've come to blows. Will there even be a third? You mull over your thoughts for a moment longer, allowing the last embers of your cigarette to fade, before tossing it aside along with your doubts.

Fuck it. No point thinking. You're not that kind of animal.

Without a second thought, you enter into the building. You're well used to break-ins, casing joints and picking locks and forcing windows and the like, but this time, there's no point. The door is open. All you have to do is walk up and step inside. Would a different approach be more subtle? Perhaps, but that's a null point. What you're about to do here is hardly going to be discrete.

As you enter into the office, you look around for a moment, only to find him missing. Is he not here? What, is he taking a break ten minutes before he closes up shop? Tsk, tsk. What shoddy service. Seems like you'll have to entertain yourself until he gets back.

So, shrugging your shoulders, you immediately make yourself at home, sitting on his chair and kicking your feet up on his desk. Your eyes idly settle upon a few loose notes he has scattered about, and you swipe them from your table. Not your typical waiting room reading material, but you're not picky. Besides, it's interesting, isn't it? What business has the great detective been getting up to since your last confrontation? Let's see here...

The great detective is on top of things, that much is for sure. Stories written in black and white across these loose notes tell of a man who is hellbent on being in the loop. Movements concerning the legendary Pokemon Palkia are there, along with the fact that he’s been put up to look into this by ‘Illeana’. Anyone who’s anyone would know that’s one of the top League eggheads. Some of it’s hand copied bits from encyclopedia entries. Some mentions places such as ‘ruins’ and ‘craters’.[break][break]
There’s a letter in there, too. The ink is long-faded, beaten away by time like so many things are in the course of history. ‘Gabe’ addresses the detective as ‘Navy’. He asks how things are going. He says he just won Sootopolis City’s gym badge. His excitement is palpable from the tone of the letter. It ends with a simple ‘I love you. – Gabe, Champ in the making’.[break][break]
Reports on the Ultra Deep Sea are there, too. League intel on what happened. How a private citizen might get his hands on some of this stuff is anyone’s guess. Dry observations about the course of the battle. Theories on why the League supply lines and chain of command broke down. One key thing he notes is that there didn’t seem to be anyone with a macro view of the battle.[break][break]
There’s also a mention of ‘her’ and how ‘she’ falls into the rifts even now. Some of the notes take the flavor of research notes, talking about an expedition back into the Ultra Deep Sea. Detective Navidson has kept himself busy. To do this much in such a short span of time implies a man who has gotten no rest.[break][break]
He walks back in without fanfare or cheers or a warning louder than his footsteps coming from deeper in the office. Sipping on a soda, he stops mid-step and looks to the intruder. His gunmetal gray eyes look him up and down. Size up the masked man.[break][break]
And what’s the first thing he says?[break][break]
Hey.” His voice is even and steady. If there’s fear there, he’s not letting it show. A man that’s been doing all of this isn’t going to be afraid of someone breaking into his spot. “You looking to hire me or kill me?

"I suppose that depends, doesn't it, mate?"

You don't even bother looking away from his notes as he comes back into the room. Not that you find them particularly interesting - They're all just old stories at best, and ghost stories at worst. It's a half-dozen investigations all going in different directions, and your gut feeling is telling you most of them are dead ends. It certainly evokes something of this "Navy" fellow, though whether that's ambition or compulsion, you can't rightly say.

You shuffle up the notes into a neat stack, before messily tossing them back over the desk. Maybe they mean something to someone. Maybe some Rocket higher-up would kill for this kind of intel. Maybe these notes would fetch a good price to the right buyer. But the thing is, they don't mean anything to you, and that means they're less than worthless. Besides, while they proved a pleasant little distraction, they're not what you're here for.

No, what you're here for is anything but pleasant.

"But, c'mon, am I supposed to confess just because you asked?" You ask, your gaze wandering over to meet his as you lean back in his chair. A smug smirk settles upon your face, an expression that displays complete awareness of how much of an asshole you're about to be. "How about you tell me? You're the detective here, Herlock Sholmes, so surely you can suss it out, right?"

He doesn’t have the heart to tell this mysterious stranger that he’s probably not long for the detective business – at least in any capacity as a private citizen. Battle lines are being drawn. Loyalties are being declared. War’s coming to the region they all share and there’s no place for people in the middle. A sea born of imagination and decay waits for him and the girl he has sworn to protect. It lurks under Dewford, in those same caverns where he is sure he has seen this masked figure before.[break][break]
All the same, he looks at this man. Truly looks at him. The edges of him. His face is covered by the mask, but there is an undeniable story in the voice, in the way he carries himself, his posture, the little ticks and movements of his arm.[break][break]
What he sees scares him. Not for his life, he doesn’t believe that’s going to end. No, it scares him for his future. This man’s older than him. He can’t tell exactly how much older he is, but it’s enough to put the fear of Arceus in him.[break][break]
Well, I figured someone would take me up on an offer for a rematch after Dewford.” He walks over to the chair meant for clients, sits down, enjoys the modest role reversal.[break][break]
I know a spot better than here. Neither one of us wants to get arrested. Meet me at the stadium in downtown at midnight. I got a guy who can get me in, no questions asked. You don’t strike me as the kind of guy who half-asses anything.” A patronizing little smile settles on his lips.[break][break]
You’re a guy who needs a fight. You won’t pay me a cent to fight you, but I see it in your eyes – that you see it in me, too. So, let’s do it right. Let me put my kid to bed and I’m all yours until one of our teams is a smear on the stadium grass.

"It's a date, then."

Dragging yourself up out from the chair, you take the short stroll towards the door. There's no need for more chat, no need to keep on talking. After all, you've already reached a mutual understanding here, haven't you? You can sense it in this man, that same primal, violent instinct that drives you. You're two of a kind, more akin to beasts than you are to normal humans. You don't need words to speak.

You don't even bother with any kind of warning. Again, there's no need to offer up a subtle threat, nor even an obvious one. You know full well he's going to be there, and he knows full well that he'll find you there, too.

"Don't be late, bud. I'd hate to lose my appetite for a fight like this."

That is your choice of parting words, the last thing you say before you shut the door behind you.

Well, that was hardly what you expected, but you can't say you're disappointed. After all, getting your battle "upgraded" to an arena is a nice silver lining. Of course, you have a few hours until then, which is why you're already walking towards the Slateport Stadium. If you're going to be brawling in such a nice venue, you might as well take advantage of it, right? You'll slip in early, fool around with the pyrotechnics, and see what you can do with the camera set-ups. Course, you're no expert on television production, but you might be able to jury-rig something that'll record your confrontation just fine.

Why go through the effort? You're not sure. Just feels like the right thing to do, y'know? Just feels like a you thing to do. It's undoubtedly Shred Zeppelin. You'd know that better than anyone.

And once that's all said and done, all that's left to do is wait for his arrival...

Somewhere in Navy’s head lies a certain notion concerning the individual who just left his office. As he walks out, all swagger and trendy words, Navy sees him off with a wave. They’re enemies, but he’s smiling at the man. A good fight’s hard to come by, at least when there’s not about fifty other people involved.[break][break]

Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He leaves the man on that upbeat note. Means, it, too. Playing it cool, Navy acts like he’s getting back to work. There’s last minute phone calls to check, reports to make. Local PD loves getting in a private businessman’s affairs when they’ve got some overlap.[break][break]

The seed of that notion shakes. It lives or dies in milliseconds. Nominally, the person who just left his office is a criminal. Even if he was just a body hired to fill Rocket’s roster for the Dewford affair, he’s still on their side. There’s no such thing as being in the middle anymore. Neutrality and peace are options Hoenn left in the past. Everyone has to take a side or one will be appointed for them.[break][break]

He could call the cops. Set up a bust. Take the guy in. Ask him questions, find out what he already knows: that he knows absolutely nothing important. This is no underboss, no beast, not even an important grunt. Just a guy who talks tough and wants a fight.[break][break]

Just like him, but on the other side, he supposes.[break][break]

There’s nothing to be gained by calling the cops. He ain’t no rat. Gabe won’t waltz out of his grave if he betrays his principles. One guy will go away to prison, and neither of them will have very much fun tonight.[break][break]

The notion dies. He takes his hand off the landline. Tsubaki soon arrives. They have a nice night. He treats her to dinner at one of the nicer restaurants in Slateport. Navy doesn’t think it’ll be his last meal, but there’s always a possibility. You never know what’s going to happen.[break][break]

Night soon falls on this city. Sunlight gives way to neon. Ruffians and ne’er do wells come out of their holes in the ground like scorpions in a desert getting ready to hunt. Sleep is for the weak and the dead, or so this city says.[break][break]

A phone call gets him into the stadium no questions asked. Navy knows most of the night guards. Graveyard shift security guards couldn’t be assed to bother. They don’t report his opponent, they don’t report him. So long as there’s not too much racket or trouble, they’re fine until morning. It’s easy enough to sell the pigs on a line about tests for an upcoming championship match or something.[break][break]

Dressed in his best navy jacket, looking the part of a champ in the making, he walks out onto the field with two Pokeballs in his hands. He’s on the other guy’s turf, now. He’s had all the time in the world to set up, get ready to put on a good show. He’s just peeking into the older man’s world. Walking across the soft, fresh-mowed grass, he wonders what he’ll see.

As Michael Navidson enters into the stadium grounds, he's greeted with a sight that can best be described as "expected". The lights have been turned on, music is quietly playing in the background, and the hardcam is rolling, but there's only so much that can be done for theatrics of an empty arena. It takes teams of dozens, if not hundreds, to run an operation like this smoothly. What's been done is about as far as one man can go.

And that one man is already there, waiting at the far end of the battlefield. As Navy steps out, so too does Shred Zeppelin, yet there's no grand announcement for either of them, no introduction waiting for them, no cheering or booing or anything of the sort. No, as the two of them find their marks, all that's there to be heard is the faint music playing in the background, and the soft footsteps upon the grass. As you look upon the audience of ghosts, your brow furrows.

"Y'know, the arenas always looked bigger on the TV." You admit, your eyes skimming over the rows and rows of empty seats staring down at you. It's almost a little uncomfortable, but you brush past it. You're simply too used to the spectacle of Galar, where every gym could seat thousands and the big events attracted a hundred times more. Hoenn could never compare to that. "Must've built them better back home. Either way..."

Wordlessly, you unhook two Pokeballs from your belt: Those belonging to Toxtricity and Slither Wing, your ace partner and your secret weapon. These two will be headlining tonight. After all, one of them has a score to settle, and the other is going to help him settle it.

"We're doing Hammerlocke Rules - That is to say, two versus two." You clarify, finally turning your gaze over to Navy for the first time since he entered the arena. "Any objections?"

He imagines what it’s like to walk across this pitch when it’s full. There’s no spectacle here. Both he and the creature across from him love the spotlight. Why else would they agree to fight here, like this? They could have gone to any old place, had this brawl anywhere on the outskirts of the city. Instead, they’re throwing down in the arena – the place where kings are made and legacies are formed. Hoenn’s gyms are an afterthought, an educational tool. There’s no glamor like there is in Galar.[break][break]

Long ago, far away, Navy was glued to the television sets watching the Galar finals. Sinnoh, Unova, and Galar all had the best League matches. Sometimes, Navy wishes he’d been born there instead. Hoenn is great. He loves his region. He’s not someone who picks up and moves – especially not with how much insanity envelopes this region…[break][break]

It’s good enough, the lights, the soft music. It sets the mood. Mood’s important in battle. He gets into it, losing himself in this moment. No intrusive thoughts. Just there here and now, how to overcome this older man who fell on the wrong side of the battle lines.[break][break]

Hammerlocke it is. Thought I’d bring out Junior just for you.” The monster he raised from infancy roars as he exits his ball, sand whipping around him. Grass gets caught in the whirlwind. Every slow, lumbering step he takes makes the ground shake.[break][break]

Galar rules, huh? Big fan of that circuit?” They’re about to send their Pokemon to kill each other, but they can be friendly about the ordeal.[break][break]

His words are accompanied by another Pokemon thrown out of its ball. Roland, a chrome knight from a future that will never be. Inside of him is the soul of a knight who died for his trainer. Carrying on in his name, the Iron Valiant twirls his double-sided blade.[break][break]

The warrior of the future looks to the bug from the past. Raising his hand, he fires off a moonblast, sparkling pink energy cutting a path to the creature. Roland, like his trainer, wastes no time. No order was given.[break][break]

Looks like we’re up, Junior. Keep up the pressure.” True to Navy’s predictions, the Tyranitar tears the pitch. Ripping the ground beneath his feet, he sends a wall of stone crashing towards both of his opponents. His stone edge slams into the other side of the field.

"Suppose you could say that, yeah."

You suppose, mainly because the Galar leagues were all you had growing up. You didn't have any of the premium cable packages that aired matches from the foreign leagues, and you never got into trading tapes or reading newsletters. The Galar circuit is, in essence, all you've ever known, and that alone is enough to make sure it's permanently infested the recesses of your brain. It's far too late to change that now. Even if you watched all the greatest hits from Kanto to Paldea, it wouldn't change your mind.

But now isn't the time for reminiscing. No, you've got to pave the road for your future, and that starts with getting your win back and walking out of this match the victor. It's time to prove you're a force to be reckoned with.

"Come on out, Toxtricity, Slither Wi--"

CRUNCH! You don't even get to finish your thought before the oversized insect lurches out of its Pokeball and socks you square in the gut. Immediately, you double over from the pain, and it's taking everything you've got to keep your composure in front of your opponent and their team. All while the perpetrator of this crime stands there before you, its tail waggling like a dog that's just been given a treat. Luckily, his blow just hit flesh, so you didn't break any bones this time. That means you're able to drag yourself back up to stand, though it's neither tall nor proud.

Paradox Pokemon Study, Slither Wing, Note #1 - He's a real fucking piece of shit bastard asshole cunt.

Your initial instinct is to smack him one for acting the bollocks in the middle of your big rematch, but you don't have time for this. Navidson is already on the move, and his Pokemon have taken the initiative. You need to react.

"Toxtricity, dodge and Poison Jab! Sli--"

Again, you can't even finish your command before Slither Wing is surging forward. It effortlessly sidesteps the Moonblast without losing any of its speed, and it only seems to keep accelerating as it barrels towards the Iron Valiant, aiming to land a crushing blow on the knight. Seems you can't really control that bug, but at the very least, its primal instincts are working in your favour. Seems like Slither Wing wants to make a good First Impression.

Paradox Pokemon Study, Slither Wing, Note #2 - Consistently faster than you expect.

For his part, Toxtricity follows the order given without issue. Crouching down, it leaps forward, dodging the eruption of stone as it soars towards Tyranitar, his hand glowing a dubious purple as toxins gather in his claw as he prepares for the aforementioned Poison Jab. Now tut of that cramped tunnel and in an open arena, your mind tells you that your ace will have the advantage you misjudged in your last fight, but your gut isn't so sure. Even if things seem like they're in your favour now, "Junior" is an explosive beast, and you can't underestimate him, not even for a second.

For now, you seem to have the momentum, but you can't let your guard down. You're not going to lose this fight a second time.

Looks like he got his hands on something down there in the sea of dreams, too. Navy’s metal knight is a creature from a distant future, a ghost of a friend. He paces across the green grass and blasts, firing off rounds of energy that never seem to be quite fast enough for the skittering bug. It wants nothing more than to rush him down.[break][break]

Crazy. Navy thinks. [break][break]It’s like Gabe’s Volcarona. Saw something like that down there with Kouji…but that one was from the future. Another machine. This thing’s like a dinosaur.[break][break]

He’s no scientist. Navy will never be a scientist. Curiosity in his headspace translates to a question: will I have to attack this discovery, or will I have to defend it from others? Deeper questions, dissections, scientific treatises on the subject of what exactly these paradoxes are will be left for someone else. Roland and this creature the egg heads call Slither Wing are here for one purpose and one purpose only: to fight one another until one of them stops moving.[break][break]

All of them are whipped by sands. Junior’s sand stream kick up a sandstorm as he lumbers towards the smaller, lither creature. Everyone, friend and foe, is hurt by that. Navy takes another note. He hasn’t had occasion to fight alongside Roland yet.[break][break]

Looks like the sand’s hurting him. Not steel, then. Weird, considering he looks like a machine. Huh. That moonblast just now. Gotta be fairy. If he’s part fairy, then maybe the other half…[break][break]

It doesn’t matter. What matters is that Roland is sent skidding back. His blade moves to parry the insect, but it can only do so much. Holding the insect at bay, his free hand moves to a clip holding the two blades together. The double-headed blade becomes two single blades, dual-wielded. Historically, not the smartest move, but you wouldn’t know it to watch Roland go.[break][break]

The blade in his off-hand streams towards the creature. Psychic energy makes the blade blow with red light. He tries to cut the creature’s stomach open with a psycho cut. The future has no need for the past. Let it cast off those shackles. …or so a particularly looney teammate of this Rocket would say.[break][break]

Junior simply stands still as he sees the toxic rocker jumping towards him. He is hopelessly outsped. Junior isn’t particularly bright, but his instincts are good. Instincts are what carry you in a fight. Claws oozing poison are coming for him. The creature comes into his domain. The sands do little to obscure their vision in such an open field, but they demand a toll for drawing close.[break][break]

As the jab sinks into his armored flesh, Junior lashes down with a bite that crushes mountains. Stone has been shattered by this jaw. Boulders reduced to rubble. All that biting power condensed into fangs that try to crunch into the Toxtricity.[break][break]

You picked the wrong gig.” Navy teases from across the battlefield, unsure of whether the other man can hear him or not.[break][break]

Ya got style. You should’ve just fought on the side of the angels and gone pro.

The Psycho Cut lands only a glancing blow. The instant that the Iron Valiant's blade begins to glow, Slither Wing immediately seems to lock on to it. However, despite its initial burst of blistering speed, it seems a little more sluggish when it comes to dodging. In the end, one pro and one con balance out, and thus, the insect escapes with only a skin-deep cut across its stomach. Deep enough to draw blood, but no deeper than that.

Paradox Pokemon Study, Slither Wing, Note #2 Correction - He's not always that fast.

Suffice to say, Slither Wing doesn't take kindly to being attacked. No, its not long before your insect immediately returns to its previous offensive. Its legs rain down heavy blows upon its foe, undeterred by its wound nor the raging sandstorm, aiming to put many a dent into the metal carapace of the false Gallade. If there were ever a Closer Combat, then you have not seen it.

It's hard to say if things are going better or worse across the battlefield. Toxtricity's Poison Jab strikes true, but much like the last time you picked this fight, it isn't immediately effective. No, Tyranitar is a tank, indomitable and unstoppable, but that's nothing you don't already know. While the former half of this battle is a venture into the unknown, the latter half is a repetition, retaking a test that you previously failed. You're well used to that. It took you seven tries to pass your drivers test. Through trial and error and a little bit of luck, you learned what you needed to, and that same strategy will get you where you need to be with Junior, too.

Case in point, the instant that Tyranitar opens its mouth, Toxtricity leaps back to a safe distance. You know better than to stay in melee range of that monster. At the same time, you can't take this too slow, lest the sandstorm wear you down. So, with a deep and lowcrackle, Toxtricity launches a Boomburst, aiming to wound it from afar.

Overall, things are going fine so far for the both of you. There's no clear winners or losers on either side of the battlefield. So much so, that the great detective decides now is time to start chatting shit.

"Hah. Don't make me laugh. Do you honestly believe the League is so angelic?" You ask, your tone half-joking and half-serious. "That they're 'right' and 'just' and all that other bullshit? That they have some unearned moral high ground just because they say they do? Do you really believe that?"

Hell no!” The detective chuckles over the battle. How they’re able to hear one another is a little miracle of Arceus he’s not planning on questioning. “League and Rocket are just two gangs. Ones that are big in Slateport wear blue and red. Guess I just traded up to gold.” He paces, watching how both of his Pokemon fare. As much as he’d love to call out orders, they’re both faring well enough on their own.[break][break]
Roland gives as good as he gets. His blade is a pink blur. He’s thrown back onto the defensive. One end defends, twirling to the other in anticipation of the next blow. At the end of the day, he’s still a man battling a monster. He can defend all he wants, send fairy dust streaming from his sword’s edge, but he has to go on the offensive.[break][break]
A glance is spared back to Junior. They’re far enough away now. This may be a Hammerlock 2v2, but they’re fighting two independent battles. If he goes back to help Junior, he leaves himself open. He throws himself into the raging sandstorm. The knight understands he’s on his own.[break][break]
Yellow light starts to build in his left hand. It grows brighter and brighter. Navy starts to feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up with static electricity. His heart starts beating faster, a war drum charting a course for the soldiers under his command.[break][break]
The electricity builds into an electric terrain that spreads across the pitch, stopping short of Junior and the opposition’s side of the field. The Tyranitar’s on the war path. Taken from afar, too slow to catch up, he’s flinging rocks. Stone Edge is a good trick, but it’s destroying the ground beneath them. Whoever has to clean this up in the morning isn’t going to be happy.[break][break]
Roland’s quark drive activates as electricity hums around him. Leaking oil from strain, he knows it’s not wise to press the fight, no need to draw it out. In his hand, the blade starts to glow an ominous red light. He won’t be staying on the defensive for very long.[break][break]
All I know is that an idiot kid I loved a lot thought there was somethin’ in the League worth saving.” He admits, not missing a beat. The detective simply observed before carrying on his point. “What kind of a big brother would I be if I didn’t prove him right?

Okay, well, at the very least, he's not that much of an idiot. You wouldn't exactly call him smart, though. He made his call, and even if it might be the wrong one, he won't change his mind. It's the kind of stupidity that you find admirable, a breed of stubborness that you'll respect, even if you don't necessarily like it. But, really, do you even care? You didn't come here to change his mind, and though he'll offer you some empty words about how you could've fought for the League, he knows you won't, either.

Because no matter what they could ever say, and no matter whatever you did for them, the League would never truly trust you, and you would never trust the League, either.

And, really, that suits you just fine.

"Well, I guess it is what it is, huh?" You simply say. It's hardly fitting, all things considered, but it's what you want to say, so you say it anyway. "Fine, then. Have it your way, and I’ll have it mine."

Regardless of your little chit-chat, the battle continues. Toxtricity continues to harass Tyranitar from a safe distance, throwing out the occasional Overdrive or Boomburst between dodging Stone Edges, attacking whenever the opportunity presents itself. It’s not a particularly effective assault, but it all adds up, and it’ll add up quick. Alas, your full attention is not dedicated to that side of the battle. No, your eyes are on the confrontation between Slither Wing and the Iron Valiant.

Just as the Paradox of the Future floods the battlefield with static electricity, the Paradox of the Past rears back, spreading its wings wide as they begin to softly glow. Energy pours outwards, motes of it floating upward and upward, coalescing in the sky above the conflict. Finally, when the glowing orb is at its largest, it blossoms into a flower of day, and casts the arena in faux sunlight. Hot enough to warm the skin, and bright enough to pierce through even the murk of the sandstorm.

And as it does so, its physiology seems to shift. It’s hard to tell underneath all the fur and the scales and the chitin, especially through the sand and the smoke and the debris, but it seems to bulk up significantly. Yet, despite that, it doesn’t seem any less limber, and it doesn’t seem any less likely to back down.

Well, isn’t this interesting…?
