Callan's gaze affixed on the pavement ahead, lost in a maze of thought. He did want to talk about it.

A heavy silence fell between them. He'd have to be vague, but it'd be good to share.

Gently, squeezed Summer's shoulder. "Lately," he started, his tone was grim, quiet. "I've been feeling down for entirely selfish reasons."

His gaze veered off, "Someone important to me is in danger and it's left me feeling helpless."

A pause hung in his voice. Callan's lips found it difficult to voice out the next sentences. "The last time we talked, it didn't go well. And now I can't help but worry that it was the last conversation we'll ever have."

His hand slipped from her shoulder as he concluded. He turned towards Summer, "It's been occupying my mind, so just... food, dating, relationships, it's all distant for me at the moment."

Summer stood silently as he spoke. It was entirely strange for her, to be so silent and allow someone else to speak. But, she could feel that she was not the only one burdened.[break][break]

And while Callan was vague, she understood the need to get this off his chest.[break][break]

Her gaze traveled over the ocean, feeling the firm hand on her shoulder as he squeezed. It was comfortable and welcome, though as he dropped his arm, she turned to look at him.[break][break]

"It's entirely alright to be selfish, in my opinion. Especially over something like this." Summer leaned against the rail, propping her chin up with a hand as she spoke.[break][break]

"Though I wish I could give you advice on what to do with this. I'm sorry that it's haunting you, Callan."[break][break]

She's felt that loneliness before. When Casey disappeared. When she shut herself out of the world. Even now, without seeing Gunner... she couldn't help but at least resonate with part of his words.[break][break]

"It's all consuming, isn't it? No matter what you do, it's there. No matter how hard you try to get rid of it, it stays?" Summer turned now, looking at him with warm eyes.[break][break]

"I don't know if I can do much to help, but if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

Listening to Summer's words, Callan couldn't help but recognize the sound of a young soul attempting to soothe others' wounds while still learning how to heal her own.

There was a distinct, endearing naivety about it, an earnestness that warmed him. There was an innocence to it, a refreshing, though slightly out-of-touch optimism that spoke of her own experience.

He could see her adjusting, shifting herself in an effort to understand and connect.

"Self-pity is ugly," he began gently, grimacing. "It wears regret like a cheap cologne, overpowering and impossible to ignore. I don't wanna indulge it." A mirthless chuckle released from his lips.

"But thank you, I think I just need some time. Once they're safe, once there is an outcome... I'll manage." Callan stops nearby and leans against the railing.

"So, what's the plan?" He begins, turning the conversation back to her, "About Gunner, I mean."

Summer nodded. In a way, she agreed with him. But, wasn't it human to sit in your own misery before breaking out of the chains? Sometimes, you just needed a little push to remember who you were.[break][break]

Humans weren't perfect, no matter how hard they tried to be.[break][break]

"You're welcome. I'm happy to listen or help in whatever way I can," Summer reiterated. "I hope the future shines brighter for you than the present is."[break][break]

Though her brows furrowed in confusion, looking at Callan with a questioning look. "What do you mean? I don't have a plan. As long as we can communicate with each other, I'm happy."[break][break]

She shifted, looking back out at the ocean. "I don't want to change what I have. As long as he's okay and safe, I'm content." A lie, but it's one she'd hold firmly until his work was done.

Callan nodded, a slow dip of his head. "Thanks, Summer." His gaze trailed from her, landing on the unending expanse of sea that sprawled before them.

Eyes latched onto the rhythmic dance of waves as they playfully greeted the shore, then retreated, his own thoughts seemingly swaying with the tide.

A shift in his stance, and Callan turned back towards Summer.

"I'm thinking about the kid." His voice carried an air of concern, the steady pace of words showing his careful tread around the topic. "But with your team around, he'll have a caring environment."

His mouth sealed shut, drawing a boundary line across that sensitive matter. This was about her life and he decided to keep it that way, letting the topic drift away on the breeze like a whisper.

A slight tilt of his head, a spark of curiosity lighting up his gaze, and he ventured forth onto new grounds. "But when is the baby due?" His question floated in the air, soon accompanied by a light-hearted chuckle as he added, "Any plans for a baby shower?"

Of course she knew that Callan was looking out for her. For the child. But there were so many uncertainties she didn't have the answer to. And for Summer, some of the answers he asked were best answered with the lies she told herself.[break][break]

Lies she hoped were the truth. Because, truly, Summer wasn't happy. She should be. She and Gunner Graves should be thinking about plans, decorating a room, whether or not they'd both take extended leave in the future... names, stupid clothes.[break][break]

But he was gone doing Arceus knew what. And Summer was still fulfilling her own role like nothing happened. They were acting like nothing happened that day at the ranch, like the fight never occurred. And it was killing her.[break][break]

Breaking out of that daze, Summer shook her head, laughing. "Not yet. I'm only about a few weeks along. We don't want to jump the gun too early," she said. "January should be around when I'm due. Maybe it'll snow again," she thought.[break][break]

"How is the Elite Four? I haven't had much time to look up any news as of late."[break][break]

Their conversation continued as they enjoyed each others company until they agreed to depart, only to see each other again in what felt like years to come...
