Zev leaned against the side of the large, nondescript van parked outside an abandoned warehouse in Slateport City. Team Rocket had seized the building for its Pokémon smuggling ring, as they had with many other similar warehouses in the district.[break][break]

The Beast had arrived thirty minutes ago with one of the newer grunts, River Marx, to deliver several cages of Paldean Pokémon. From there, they would be distributed to the black market for sale.[break][break]

He was simply waiting for the unloading and any related business matters to complete, which River was handling. This job was a test of his skills, after all. If the transaction went smoothly, Zev could write a short, positive report upon returning to the submarine. River might see himself rise in Team Rocket's ranks if he kept up the good work.[break][break]

The sound of an approaching vehicle caught Zev's attention. He frowned, squinting as the headlights illuminated him and the van at his back. The hairs on the back of his neck were standing on end; whoever had just arrived wasn't part of the plan.[break][break]

A hand lowered to the Pokéballs at his belt, even as he shot a quick glance through the open door of the warehouse. Movement suggested River was returning outside, the job complete.[break][break]

The car parked and its doors opened. Two figures stepped out, their features obscured by the shadows. "Police!" one shouted. "Don't move! Hands away from your Pokéballs!"

[attr="class","char-words"]river wasn't a stranger to things going awry; in-truth, he found that that to be the end result more often than not. he counted himself lucky to be under the purview of the one of team rockets' beasts.

the call to surrender brings a spike of concern through the grunt, and with it, questions. where was Zev Harcourt ? a stupid question, considering the faceless voices had been talking to someone. likely, this was his superior. he'd been ready to write this entire encounter off as nothing, when a thought struck him.

was this a test?
[break][break]
it wouldn't be the first time, or at least, if the rumors of other grunts were true. if it wasn't, and for some arceus-forsaken-reason the beast was struck down tonight, river would.. probably have some tricky questions to answer for.

he sighs and tosses a glance at the containers of sleeping pokemon. while all of these creatures meant nothing in the face of his life, he knew team rocket would not let them go so easily.

that just left the situation at hand in-front of him. as his mind works, river tumbles a gold coin over his fingers. as something comes to him, he smiles.

moments after the arrival of the officers, a figure steps out from the shadows of the warehouse. river approaches, hands tied in-front of him, mouth taped and expression fearful. from beneath that very tape his mouth moves, only for suppressed mumbling and screaming to meet the two figures in front.

should zev be insightful enough, he'd just barely catch the small wiggling tail that sticks out from river's back.

Footsteps from the warehouse drew the attention of both the police and Zev. When River appeared bound and gagged, the officers hesitated. They could not see what Zev saw: the small tail of River's Zorua poking out from the illusion.[break][break]

One of the cops stepped away from their car to approach River while the other one remained behind. Each held a Pokéball, ready to release their contents at a moment's notice.[break][break]

Zev watched carefully as the first officer neared River, took a closer look at his binds, and asked, "What's going on here?" He reached out to rip the tape off River's mouth, likely to hear the answer from the grunt himself.[break][break]

Zev tensed, ready for action.

still attached, like the stain of smeared lipstick, river's 'mouth' snickers in mischievous glee. the officer, wide-eyed and reeling, turns to the once bound and gagged man in confusion only to be met by the human-sized illusion dissipating into smoke.

unable to fight his own instincts the other office moves closer to the trio, his shadow casting a silhouette on the warehouse behind Zev Harcourt as he steps into the headlights path. from behind him a loud, ear-piercing screech echoes as river himself is now standing just outside of the driver's door of the squad car. he holds the loudspeaker in one hand, and leans against the frame of the car's door on his other.

"any of you lot allergic to pollen?"

the preceding chuckle is dry, and probably on some level, creepy. he turns to zev and lifts the collar of his shirt to cover his mouth. either the man would get it, or he wouldn't.

carried on an invisible breeze, a sleep powder descends.

As soon as the words left River's mouth, Zev understood. He did not need to meet River's eyes or see the way the other man covered his mouth. The Beast backed away in a flash, covering the lower half of his face with the collar of his jacket.[break][break]

"Hey, wait—" said the officer closest to the squad car, before sneezing violently.[break][break]

Lights flashed as the policemen released their Pokémon: a Nidorino and a Mightyena. Even as the cops slumped against the nearest structures, drowsy, their Pokémon attacked. The Mightyena lunged straight for River, jaws wide in an attempt to BITE. Meanwhile, the Nidorino charged Zev with HORN ATTACK.[break][break]

Out of the Beast's shadow rose his Gengar. A PHANTOM FORCE brought the man and ghost to the roof of the smuggling van, safe out of harm's way.

[attr="class","char-words"]river's eyes widen instinctively at the sight of a snarling maw, but relief comes in the form of a deep, echoing vibration. the hair shimmers visibly as the butterfree's bug buzz meets the approaching canine — and wins.

the dog yelps and snarls, landing hastily a half-a-dozen feet away. the sleep powder was showing signs already of affecting the officers, and he knew the pokemon under their command would be soon to follow.

a metallic crunch turns his attention to the van, now thoroughly dented by the horn attack.

"need help?" he asks without inflection, confident the beast could handle himself, but overly cautious.

The van shuddered and swayed as the Nidorino's HORN ATTACK slammed into its side. Zev wobbled, arms spread for balance, but managed to stay on the roof.[break][break]

He shook his head at River. "We're fine."[break][break]

As he spoke, his Gengar retaliated with HEX, sending the enemy Pokémon reeling backward. It roared in frustration, its movements already slowing down. The effects of SLEEP POWDER were taking hold.[break][break]

Eventually, both policemen and their Pokémon had fallen unconscious. Zev eyed them and their vehicle. "They saw our faces. We should do a memory wipe."

"we could kill them," he offers, gauging the beast's reaction as he spoke. it was clearly the greater of the two evils, and the loss of a patrol would create a noticeable gap in the league's security net.

Zev jumped down from the van's roof. "No. That would cause an even greater mess. We don't want more police investigating our smuggling routes."[break][break]

And besides, they had already incapacitated the officers. To kill them now would be a disdainful indulgence, one that he would not abide.[break][break]

Zev hadn't brought any Psychic-type Pokémon with him, so he nodded at the Pokéball in River's hand. "See if your Pokémon can convince them they found nothing here. It was a dead end."[break][break]

Thankfully, this area of Slateport had no surveillance system of any kind to witness the encounter. Zev and River could depart together with their van, dump it, and then go their separate ways without any trouble.[break][break]

"Good work tonight, by the way," the Beast said.
