[attr="class","mitchelw"]When they met at their rendezvous site, Zev Harcourt would find two Cygnes, both dressed in black with matching domino masks. The outline of one Cygne is vaguely purple. They’re sitting on a bench reading something on their phone, just outside the bounds of a glowing streetlight. As he approaches, both Cygne's stand and fall into step beside him.

“So the dossier says that there’s a handful of dissenters hiding out in this little pisstrap of an apartment,” she says, voice quiet in the night. “I know you’re ye old expert Grim Reaper so what’s the best way to do this?” She had some vague knowledge of breaking and entering and jewel theft, and certainly didn’t blink in the face of murder, but she also didn’t want to fuck everything up and get caught.

Zev had not expected to see two Cygnes waiting for him, but he did not let the surprise show on his face. After all, many members of Team Rocket used Pokémon to obfuscate their identities or confuse their enemies.[break][break]

"Since there are more of them than us, we'll need to use the element of surprise," he replied, glancing up at the apartment building. "The less prepared they are when we arrive, the better."[break][break]

He studied its exterior. Dilapidated, with a rusty iron fire escape running up its side. Most of the windows were shuttered. The apartment housing their targets was on the top floor.[break][break]

"A place like this won't have cameras — and if they do, they either aren't working or the security will be lax. Going through the front door and taking the elevator should be fine. We'll have our Pokémon out and ready."[break][break]

Zev proceeded toward the building's entrance.[break][break]

"How many bodies do you need for tonight? Just one?" he murmured to Cygne.

[attr="class","mitchelw"]“Great, okay.” Cyg could work with the element of surprise, although it wasn’t necessarily her chosen tactic-- she was more of the going in pants down guns blazin’ type. But, hey, she was also a Ghost-type specialist, and what was more ghostly than a surprise ghost?

“The more the merrier,” Cyg said, skirting around a hole in a rusting, drooping chainlink fence, careful not to jingle it. Eulalia ghosted through, her body shifting into a pale lavender mist before she re-solidified as not!Cygne on the other side.

“And remember, I need them alive. Pre-bodies.” Her voice is quiet so as not to echo around the crummy, water-stained ground-floor lobby.

The elevator creaks under their weight and Cyg frowns at the buttons, numbers long since worn off.

“Going up.”

Zev considered Cygne's request, then released a Pokémon that seemed suitable. His Illumina Chandelure appeared in a flash of light, purple flames casting a soft glow upon the interior of the cramped elevator.[break][break]

"Chandelure can hypnotize with his flames. It should last long enough for you to secure a person to a table or chair and begin your work," he explained. "If that's not enough, my Ariados can bind them with webbing."[break][break]

The elevator shuddered violently as it reached the top floor. Its doors slid open with a groaning creak. Zev stepped out first, his Chandelure hovering at his shoulder, and quietly made his way across stained and molding carpet to the apartment in question.[break][break]

Chandelure swooped down to the doorknob and focused OVERHEAT on it. The metal started to smoke and sizzle. Soon, it was glowing hotly as it melted down both sides of the door. This stage of the job finished, Chandelure backed up as Zev stepped forward.[break][break]

The exposed skin on his neck and hands turned black with gleaming crystal.[break][break]

And then he kicked the door open and barreled inside.

They paused outside the door and Cyg was immediately distracted by the change in Zev’s flesh.

“Wait, what the fu--,”

BAM.

Eulalia went in behind Zev, tendrils of pale lavender smoke shifting off of her as she targeted the first two individuals. There were six in total, Cyg counted; Eulalia snapped up ankles in her claws and pulled. They cried out as she dragged them down and then clocked their heads hard against the ground, knocking them out. Cyg took another down with a heavy boot to the groin and a knee to the nose.

“You’re going to tell me about that trick next,” she said, dragging her groaning man to a crappy countertop and hoisting him up.

While Cygne and her Zoroark handled half of the group, Zev and his Chandelure took care of the rest. The animated candelabra's flames burned hotly, their hypnotic dance subduing the three remaining people. Their bodies slumped together as they sat down against the far wall.[break][break]

"Keep them in this state. Don't send their souls away yet," Zev instructed his Pokémon.[break][break]

Then he turned to watch as Cygne lifted one of the men onto a countertop. That she had the strength to do it herself surprised Zev, but he said nothing about it, nor did he bother to help her.[break][break]

Instead, he lifted his hand, still covered in the hard carapace. With a thought, he dismissed it, and the crystals retreated back into his flesh. "It's armor. A gift from Chu-e Choi," Zev said cryptically.

“Uh-huh. What the fuck ever.” Everyone and their goddamn sister was getting superpowers these days. She wondered when her turn would come. “Time for a little field surgery.”

She pulled out lines of tow-rope straps bundled in on each other and summoned her Dusknoir in the same measure. Zen took one strap and looped it around the guys’ midsection while Cyg did the same with his chest. “Legs, too, please.”

Also from her pack she produced a headlamp, a sterile pack of surgical tools, and a handful of injectable vials and needles. “Bluh, bluh, at 0.4 mig-per-kig, how much do you think scrawny here weighs?” She asked, snapping on some gloves. “Two hundred? I want him to be sedate, so… 0.45 kg per pound… do my dimensional analysis… 90 kilograms times that–,” she was drawing a square in the air with her fingers. “Sure, we’ll go with that.”

She drew up a milky substance into a syringe and pulled the guy’s arm into her lap.

“The problem I keep running into is how to get the prosthetic to feed back into the ocular nerve. Everyone I’ve worked on so far has atrophied eyes: their nerves are receding or, worse, infected. Maybe I can graft living tissue together to make the connection function.” She sank the needle into her subject’s arm, pulled back, got blood, and pushed the plunger. “It works with other types of tissue so it should work with nervous tissue. I hope.”

She tore her surgery pack open and fit her scalpel blade on.

Zev watched, inwardly impressed, as Cygne and her Dusknoir worked together to secure the man to the countertop.[break][break]

"Probably closer to one-eighty," he offered from where he stood over the bodies of the other dissenters. His Chandelure continued to hypnotize the three, while he kept his eye on the two that Cygne's Zoroark had knocked unconscious in case they stirred.[break][break]

But the woman continued her calculations without Zev's input and proceeded with administering the sedative.[break][break]

"Are you going to swap out these men's eyes for prosthetics you brought with you?" he asked, eyebrows raised in surprise. He assumed said grafting was what she'd test that day with her living subjects. "Can I see one?"

Slowly, the subject’s body relaxed, driven to languidity by the surplus of morphine flowing through his veins. That was fine, Cyg didn’t really need his filtrating organs functioning.

She popped a sterile needle through the paper wrapping and dug in her pack for some chromic gut.

“Ummm…. I sort of fly by the seat of my pants. I’ve really only done one trial on a living person before and everything else has been cadavers.” She threaded the needle and pushed up the limp man's eyelid with one finger, chewing her bottom lip as she focused on stitching his eyelid open. “But I do know that step one is eye poppy out thing.”

She made a noncommittal grunt and jerked her head toward her pack. Zenaïs reached in and pulled out a small case, roughly twelve inches long by four inches wide. She snapped open the top and revealed to Zev ten small, circular orbs.

“That’s the--- the mark three? Oop, sorry, that’s a skin bleeder. Uh, it’s-- significantly more streamlined than my original prototype.”

The orbs are the size of a normal, human eye; they’re a gunmetal color save for the iris, which are arrayed in a variety of colors: one slightly neon, glowing version of every color of the rainbow, plus a very dark red, a bright white, and one that’s slightly more natural, mottled hazel in color. Aside from very faint seams in the gunmetal casing, and a small bump of a node at the back, all the inner workings were safely contained in the chassis shell.

“It’s-- physically the eye is just a series of mirrors, really. It’s not hard. Muscles and tendons can be attached to give it lifelike movement.” She’d switched to a scalpel and began making delicate cuts to extricate the man’s eye. “But it’s the feedback that I’m trying to replicate. Picture, color, depth.”

The little sphere pops out with a gentle squish and Cyg sets it in a little metal tray, turning her attention to the nervous sheath still clinging to the back of it.

“There’s the money shot.” She set the scalpel down in the metal tray and reached for an eye, grabbing a green one and shifting the chassis around in her fingers.

“And on the first day, I said ‘Let there be light’.”

Zev knew very little biology and even less engineering. When presented with the prosthetic eyes, he only saw them for what they were at the surface, not comprehending what sort of machinery was required for them to work.[break][break]

So he remained silent, stepping back from the case so Cygne could make her selection. He glanced down at their other targets, still unconscious or hypnotized, before returning his full attention to the experiment.[break][break]

"How will you know it's working?" he asked, wondering if they would have to wait until the man on the counter woke up.

Neural grafting was a very delicate procedure. But life so infrequently accounted for these things.

Shrugging a shoulder and summoning her Gardevoir by tossing her Pokeball to the side, Cyg made a small slit in the neural sheath; with her other hand, she spun the protective cover off the node at the back of the eye revealing the thin, fiber-optic like needles protruding from it.

A soft pink glow overtook her fingers as Kanaya’s psychic guided man and machine together, Cyg not even daring to breathe. Then, the Gardevoir flexed her hand, and small, pink rings dropped from her palm, as the heal pulse fused the neural sheath back together. Cyg set the prosthetic in the socket, gently.

“Now if this was, like, proper, there’d be surgery and muscle grafting and all that sort of shit. But I’m just trying to get this thing to work.”

She’d already pulled up a second injectable bottle and drawn back a syringe full of an opaque liquid.

“I’m gonna pump him full of Naloxone, wake him up, and see if he screams.”

And she did just that, jumping down off the counter after and trying to temper her expectations.

If this worked, it was revolutionary technology for those with newly injured eyes. There was still a lot to do, of course. An eye wasn’t very useful if it didn’t also respond to stimuli, but that was a lot of bullshit she was still working on.

But it still didn’t do anything for Isaac Merlo which was the whole fucking point of this in the first place. Baby steps, Cygne, baby steps.

Kanaya assisted the reversal agent by dropping soft halos of heal pulse over the subject, and before long he was squirming and pulling at his binds. His un-altered eye fluttered under its lid, and slowly opened.

“Heyyyyyy there, buddy,” Cyg said, leaning over him and giving a little finger wave, “I know this has all been real scary but just bear with me here. How many fingers am I holding up?”

The guy, whose poor brain hadn’t completely turned on yet, mumbled, “Two?”

Cyg flashes Zev a grin. “Well, he’s not dead yet, so that’s a plus. Great, perfect, that means I didn’t fry your brain with all the drugs. How about--,” she covered his untouched eye with her palm-- "now?"

There’s a moment of recognition that passes over the guy’s features, the contortion of his mouth as it tightens, opens, shuts; his whole body writhes as his struggles to escape increase.

She slaps the subject gently on the cheek twice. “Focus, pumpkin. How many fingers?”

“I don’t-- why-- I can’t--,”

“Shh-shh-shh. Focus. Answer the question, and then I’ll let you go. Okay?”

“I can’t-- it’s too bright-- why can’t I--,”

Cyg frowned. “Can you see anything? Shapes? Colors?” She waggled her fingers. “Movement?”

“I-- yeah, I-- there’s something moving but-- why’s it so bright?”

“Focus.”

“I-- I can’t-- I-- f--four?”

“Ha! Brilliant!” She balled her fist. “And how about now?”

“Ahh-- that’s-- just, nng--,” she felt his good eye squinting under the hard press of her palm, “--j-j-just your hand?”

“I’ll take it!” Cyg fist pumped as she leaped back onto the counter with a whoop. “Tag ‘em and bag ‘em, boys.”

Her Dusknoir and her Zoroark traded a pained look.

“That means,” Cyg said, pulling up another syringe of morphine, “drug them and I’ll take them back to my shop.”

“H-h-hey, wait--!”

“Nighty night, now.”

He quieted soon after the injection, and Cyg dug in her pack for some glue to slap on him to keep the eye in the socket without pulling too much on the optic nerve.

"Whew, one small step for man, et-fucking-cetera."

Surely the victorious elation of success would set in eventually... right?

Zev watched the exchange between Cygne and her involuntary patient with an impassive expression. Inwardly, though, he was surprised her experiment had actually worked. And already, the gears of his mind were churning, recalculating her usefulness to him.[break][break]

Had Isaac Merlo shown the same lack of morals, Zev might have put him to greater work. But where one tool lacked, another could fill in the gaps. It didn't matter that Cygne found him despicable, though it certainly made manipulating her more challenging.[break][break]

But give someone a little of what they want, and they'll slowly lower their defenses over time. And that night was the first of many opportunities to lower Cygne's.[break][break]

"Do you even have space in the flower shop's basement for all these bodies?" Zev asked, keeping his thoughts to himself. "Keeping them all fed and clean might prove too challenging, and that's assuming Elisabeth will help. Keeping just one fed and clean would be easier."
