As Elisabeth listened, the lights of the crystablooms dimmed and out like a signal aching for translation, erratic in their flickering pulse. Her own hand proved as restless, drumming against the counter of the lab.[break][break]

"We're all blind to something," she added finally. "The more powerful we become, the more dangers we miss around us, and the less we hide our own significance. Fear is what keeps us vigilant."[break][break]

It felt frustratingly circular, this conversation, but it touched on a truth she disliked unveiling: that she, herself, was becoming blind. The fact was that Naomi Sato, like her, appeared innocuous at first blush. Nomi, like her, had entered Rocket as a seemingly harmless member.[break][break]

This familiar husk, this sliver of the shade that Elisabeth had once been, incensed her.[break][break]

"I hope you enjoy being my replacement here. The flowers should suit you, I think."[break][break]

Nothing curbed the bitterness in her words as she prepared herself to depart, awaiting for the Head Scientist's inevitable dismissal.

Like a humid, foggy window beginning to clear after a gust of cold air, Nomi found that she could see, ever so faintly, a glimmer of the woman Elisabeth Fiorelli used to be. So, she is not wholly lost to us, the Head Scientist decided, even as the glass clouded up again, as opaque as ever.[break][break]
Fear is what keeps us vigilant.[break][break]
Had she sensed Nomi's fear? Of her? As the Underboss moved to leave, gliding past Nomi with a bitter frown, Nomi let out a soft, relieved breath. The flowers flickered, then brightened - Elisabeth's presence no longer a threat to their beautiful glow. The younger woman could not help but feel as if she'd survived an encounter meant to harm her, and she suddenly felt tremendously weary, as if she had run for miles. She'd held her own against a monster, and she'd come out unscathed. Barely.[break][break]
What does Wo-Chien fear, then? She almost asked, but kept that thought to herself. Instead, she merely nodded to Elisabeth with the respect a woman of her station deserved.[break][break]
"I will do my best to care for them, Underboss Fiorelli."[break][break]
When the door clicked shut, Nomi looked down at her hands, realizing she had balled them into fists tight enough to draw blood.
