In normal situations, Summer Atreides wouldn't find herself intimidated by anyone. She was of higher priority, status, and talent than the majority of individuals in her world.[break][break]

But when she was told that she'd be assisting Cillian Quinn in a mission, she found herself questioning why she was picked out of all the other members in team Rocket.[break][break]

She'd refuse to admit something like that out loud. However, even with the status she held, in the shadows of Rocket, Summer's powers were limited. She held trade deals and information that was important, but even she was disposable.[break][break]

Their meeting point was at the bottom of Mt. Chimney, where Summer noticed he stood there waiting for her. She gritted her teeth, her jaw clenched, until she stood at his side with her arms crossed.[break][break]

"Good morning. What is our task today?"

Cillian notes the tension in Summer's crossed arms and clenched jaw, but makes no comment of them as she comes to stand at his side. The underboss doesn't answer immediately, taking a long drag of his cigarette before crushing it beneath his boot and pocketing the butt.[break][break]

"Good morning," he returns, at last, his deep voice shaped by his Galarian accent. "One of our agents has conveniently disappeared. We're following a lead."[break][break]

The pursuit and execution of Rocket traitors was a specialty of his. Summer Atreides's inclusion, though she may not see it that way, was pure happenstance. Their ranks had shifted in the aftermath of Dewford.[break][break]

The lead in question had been courtesy of Admin BARNABY FINCH; they'd caught sight of the missing agent when cycling through the trail cams put in place to monitor the activity of Moltres.[break][break]

"They've failed to report in for a week, now. Consider them potentially armed and dangerous."[break][break]

He starts toward the trail, expecting her to follow.

Normally, the wafting smell of cigarettes wouldn't bother her. But she didn't know if it was her mood or the atmosphere. The last puff Cillian let out made Summer's stomach curl before it was stomped out beneath his shoe. She then breathed, closing her eyes for a moment to calm herself.[break][break]

She opened her eyes to make eye contact with him, her brow quirked upward as he gave a small debriefing. More and more Rockets were jumping ship as of late, weren't they? And with the order to hunt them down, she wasn't surprised to be involved in a mission like this.[break][break]

She just wished it wasn't right now.[break][break]

"Understood."[break][break]

Summer could hear the disapproval in Gunner Graves's voice if she told him what she was doing right now. The image of pure fury played in her mind before she squashed it out.[break][break]

She was of team Rocket. This was her duty.[break][break]

"Do you have intel on any Pokemon specialties he might have? My coverage is fire, dark, and poison, though I suspect you knew that already." It was known information for a public figure like her what preferences she used in battle.[break][break]

"Mr. Quinn... if I dare ask, what do you believe is causing the exodus as of late?" Summer asked after a few beats silence.

"He is a fire-type specialist as well. I suspect that's why he's run to Moltres' lair."[break][break]

Cillian's laugh is rough with mockery. It's clear he thinks little of the grunt's ability to appeal to the fire bird. Perhaps they'd get lucky and find him in the heart of the volcano, foolishly sacrificing himself in the hopes that the Otome route had been some premonition.[break][break]

But Cillian is not one to rely on luck, and so he sends out an Aerodactyl for aerial support. The DARK PREDATOR would appreciate the hunt.[break][break]

If Summer Atreides's question surprises or upsets him, Cillian doesn't show it.[break][break]

"I suspect those without the mettle to survive in our ranks are choosing cowardice and stupidity over the possibility to adapt." There's a sneer in his tone; he's thinking of his brother. "A lull in activity led some to believe that Rocket was a place for soft-hearted idealists, and not a criminal organization."[break][break]

And he tried to blame me for his soft heart.

"MOLTRES..." Summer echoed, looking ahead with a rather blank expression. "He believes he can gain favor of a legendary Pokemon that easily?"[break][break]

Even someone as haughty and egotistical as her wouldn't dare do that. She was no fool. Summer would rather preserve her pride and her life than to go into the lair of a beast of legend and go up in flame.[break][break]

"Thus the order to hunt down anyone leaving or having the thought of leaving," she echoed, kicking a rock out of her way as they trekked the mountain. "Do we really have so many coming to our ranks who think Rocket is a game to play?"[break][break]

Perhaps she was showing her true involvement with the grunts there. Summer was focused more on the business side of things, selling illegal items and arms to her colleagues and to the black market rather than training the new generation.[break][break]

"So we find this grunt. And then we interrogate him?"

Cillian chuckles darkly at Summer's bemused response.[break][break]

"Arrogance is one hell of a drug."[break][break]

In a way, he understood the allure. He'd sought Articuno when it had pulled the curious to Shoal Cave, only to be rejected by the frigid deity on account of his aggression. No regrets were felt toward that rejection, for he could not imagine a more fitting bond than that he'd forged with Lugia.[break][break]

She seems out of touch with Rocket's recent exodus.[break][break]

"Enough to be a problem," he replies, lip curled. My own brother. "It seems our period of rest without war was enough to convince some we were freedom fighters, and not a criminal organization."[break][break]

How quickly they'd forgotten the horrors of Kanto. Rocket had used that naivete to their advantage while they could, but now more than ever they showed signs of returning to charred roots. Cillian had resisted that pull at first, but now succumbed to it as was his duty.[break][break]

"Yes," he affirms. "And then we kill him."

Summer knew he was right. She'd been hooked on egotism and haughtiness. It ran in her veins as smooth as blood did. But when it came to people like Cillian Quinn, she knew that she had to take it down a notch.[break][break]

Or even erase that attitude completely.[break][break]

"Freedom fighters," she echoed, scoffing before laughing at the thought. "If only they'd seen Kanto..."[break][break]

Perhaps it was hypocritical of her to say that, since she didn't fight on the front lines. Her father had, leaving her in charge of the business while he was in battle. But she knew enough of what happened between the League and Rocket. She knew, even now, that Rocket was for the strong and worthy.[break][break]

Was she worthy?[break][break]

"And then we kill him." Perhaps she wasn't, by how taken aback she was by his statement. Summer looked over at Cillian, her brows raised.[break][break]

"That's it? No interrogation or reformation?"

There was no such luxury for Cillian. He'd participated in the takeover, witnessed its brutalities first-hand. While he had not been instrumental as Beasts like Chu-e Choi or admins like THEO BECKETT and even declan walsh at the time, he had been complicit.[break][break]

His hands were stained with Kanto's blood.[break][break]

Perhaps it is this that sees him scoff. Perhaps it's simply that he's become disillusioned to the idea of reformation.[break][break]

"He's been given his chances. They've run out."[break][break]

His tone is of ice and steel. As they ascend the trail, the air growing hotter with each step, he peers at her with eyes narrowed.[break][break]

"Will that be a problem?"

The look that Cillian gave her, filled with cold ice and steel that matched his voice, would bring a shiver down her spine. Luckily, Summer was able to hold back her physical response, holding his gaze firmly as she shook her head.[break][break]

"Of course not. I know nothing about him, and you know more given your status. I was merely asking a question," she replied.[break][break]

She cut eye contact first, looking back at the path ahead of them. So death was upon the grunt. She almost pitied him.[break][break]

Almost.[break][break]

Summer could tell that they were upon MOLTRES'S liar, the heat growing as they climbed. "We could split up and search for him. Take a side and capture him when we find him," she suggested, reaching for a Poke ball.

Cillian nods. Before Summer looks away, she might notice the melting of ice in his eyes.[break][break]

"Nothing wrong with asking questions," he assures her.[break][break]

So long as you accept the answers.[break][break]

Their climb has become miserably hot, sweat pouring down the back of his neck and exposed skin burning. Times like these, he regrets his decision to keep smoking; his lungs ache as breaths come harder.[break][break]

He frowns at the suggestion to split up before conceding with a shrug.[break][break]

"Call out if you find anything," he instructs, and releases a Pokémon of his own. The Aerodactyl's skills as a DARK PREDATOR made it a prime hunting companion, and its rocky hide helped it resist the heat.[break][break]

At a fork in the trail, they separate.

Was that... perhaps a bit of warmth in his eyes? Kindness? Summer didn't want to believe it. It would be easier to believe that Cillian Quinn was a cold, heartless killer, one of the heads of Rocket. Why did she think that he could have a soul?[break][break]

They were all humans. Maybe he was one too, and she just didn't know it yet.[break][break]

She swiped away the sweat that was clinging to her brow, taking right on the fork. Her HISUIAN ZOROARK trailed ahead, moving in a ghost-like manner along the path. And when Hela caught sight of their target, she paused, sharing a glance with her trainer.[break][break]

"Hela. ILLUSION. Make him believe you're what's he's looking for." MOLTRES. Could Hela pull it off?[break][break]

Pressing into her comms, she spoke to Cillian in a voice to avoid warning the grunt of their whereabouts. "Target spotted. My ZOROARK is going to lure him into a trap. Come around the fork to the right."

"Got it."[break][break]

When next his Aerodactyl circles to sight him, Cillian gives it a hand signal that means follow and changes course to the direction he'd left Summer Atreides to chart. Though he was no small man, the underboss moved with a predator's grace, picking his way quietly through the rock and ash.[break][break]

What he sees illuminated near the volcano's summit is not Moltres — he'd seen the phoenix firsthand in the Blackout of Slateport, and knew at once this was the imposter of Summer's ruse.[break][break]

Unfortunately for their mark, he was not so lucky.[break][break]

"Moltres!" he cries, scrambling up the slopes toward the illusory firebird. His eyes are wide and wild. "I knew you'd returned!"[break][break]

Gaze cast skyward, Cillian sends another signal to the Aerodactyl, who pulls into a steep dive.

To say Summer was impressed was an understatement. She was thrilled with Hela's ability to transform into an ILLUSION of MOLTRES. Of course, it was far from perfect. If anything, she looked like a strange form of the fire bird, with a few strange tweaks or missing details.[break][break]

But the HISUIAN ZOROARK was imitating a legendary beast. It was to be expected.[break][break]

It tricked their target, regardless, as he cried out to the false-god and fell to his knees in worship. He didn't have time to react as Cillian Quinn's AERODACTYL swooped in and captured him.[break][break]

His terrified scream made chills run down Summer's spine, turning her head away as the Pokemon swooped off with him and made a lap around the mountain. Time was running out. They had to eliminate him. "Hela, release."[break][break]

Her Pokemon broke the ILLUSION, her white and red fur showing as she shrunk to her normal form. Exhaustion was clear on her face, pants coming from her mouth as she lay on the ground. Summer returned her to her Poke ball, looking to Cillian.[break][break]

"Any interrogation?"

Sharp, rocky talons sink deep into flesh.[break][break]

Aerodactyl alone could extinguish the pathetic creature now pinned beneath its weight, but it doesn't dare kill without an order from its master. The prehistoric predator turns its gaze upon Cillian, who has drawn his gun.[break][break]

As their mark whimpers, cowers, begs, Cillian tunes it all out.[break][break]

He doesn't remove the safety. Instead, he shakes his head and flips the gun toward Summer in offering.[break][break]

"We have the proof we came for."[break][break]

Seeing as she'd captured the traitor, Summer is offered the execution.
