Like surveillance cameras documenting her every movement, the councilwoman regarded each pair of eyes as another gamble. Another pipeline for this conversation to reach back to ears better left sealed away, deaf to all the unnecessary noise being spewed between them.

Why was it like this? Why was she always stuck on the defense, shielding herself from allegations, when all she'd ever wanted was to breathe?
[break][break]

Did illeana reyes ever feel this way? Or Melody Miro? Were their necks ever estrangled by the building links of lies strung together? Probably not. How simple life must be for them.

These thoughts, along with all else, were torn from her the moment Matias moved to respond.

Despite the stillness in her expression, bewilderment flashed across her eyes, exemplified by the brief silence that tied her lips together. This wasn't right. Matias wasn't one to agree so easily, especially as of late.

No, stubbornness bound his words and thoughts together, creating fortified walls she'd always have to tear apart, brick by brick, until at least one thought could struggle through his defenses. Never had it been so easy to convince, much less urge out an apology.

And yet, her heart lurched toward it.

Like a child carved by starvation, her heart twisted at the temptation standing before her. The ability to mend. To start again.

"i don't trust you."
[break][break]

Flashes of etched memories rewind in the back of her mind. The heat of mt chimney, the hurt of her resolve, the tearing of betrayal; all at once, it rushed back to her, coalescing into one all-consuming flame.

"Then please."
[break][break]

Reluctantly, she allowed his hand to cusp the side of her face. It was a gamble, letting such a display of affection be revealed. But, something told her to keep pushing forward. To finish what they'd started here together.

"Don't leave me. Help me watch over whatever this thing ends up being."

She took a soft breath.

"Please. You're the only one i can trust with this."

Guilt is a funny thing.

Meant to dissuade the weak and impair the strong, it was one emotion that always followed Penelope's every move. Heavy, dead, and old, its warmth enveloped her shoulders like an old pelt.

It was typically in moments like these where the merit of her efforts finally came to fruition, blossoming beautifully red apples, that guilt took aim. One arrow was enough to cripple, two would get the job done.

And yet, upon hearing Matias' wrapped promise, the furtive expression that typically peeked out from the edges of her forced smiles was no longer.

Rather, good intentions whetted her heart like stone would sharpen any blade. This was for Hoenn, she would tell herself. And for him, too.

It was these sentiments that would carry her home that night.

And when she would eventually click the door closed behind her, disallowing further eyes from peering into her life, the contempt would finally swell.

All the insecurities that tore at her, all the envy that reigned her thoughts into compliance - there was no preventing the storm that raged.
