Walking through the serene quiet of Petalburg Woods reminded Zev a lot of his childhood. When he was a boy, he'd escape into the forests outside Lavender Town. There, other children couldn't find him and bother him. There, he could occupy his mind with games he enjoyed.[break][break]

He did not wander Petalburg Woods to play those same games. But the hushed calm brought him a certain measure of comfort, one he could not find in the boisterous city he called home. In that forest, he could almost be himself again, the way he was himself as a child.[break][break]

Unaware of the restrictions placed on him by society. Uninterested in complying with them.[break][break]

At his side, his Espeon padded softly through the underbrush. The Sun Pokémon was not one Zev used for Rocket work, but to support his civilian persona. Espeon's presence meant he was prepared to put on his usual act, just in case he ran into random hikers.

Zev's stomping through the woods startled a wild Nidorino who was rooting through something on the ground. He watched the Pokémon run off and was about to continue his hike when he realized what exactly the Nidorino had been rummaging through.[break][break]

The burned, skeletal remains of a building occupied a large clearing. Stone was charred black, and the wooden supports had completely collapsed into ash.[break][break]

What happened here? Zev wondered, curiosity compelling him to step toward the ruin. His Espeon followed, silent, watchful.

Based on what remained of the structure, the building had been some kind of small residence. No remnants of furniture indicated the purposes of each room, but he saw their outlines and imagined what they might have been. The entrance was open, spacious; a smaller room in the back might have been used for storage.[break][break]

Zev stopped in his tracks, staring down. A square hole in the foundation, its edges charred, suggested a basement, though whatever stairs of ladder had been used to descend into it was gone.[break][break]

He moved on, walking past the hole. Stepping through the back part of the building, he found himself facing a weed-choked patch of earth. However, signs of previous activity suggested it hadn't originally been part of the forest.[break][break]

A scattering of metal gardening tools, rusted and filthy.[break][break]

A watering can, its plastic body half-melted and twisted by the fire.[break][break]

Movement among the foliage caught Zev's eye. An Arbok slithered into view. With a click of his tongue, he ordered his Espeon to attack. The Sun Pokémon hit the snake with a PSYBEAM, giving Zev an opportunity to throw a Pokéball at it.[break][break]

Afterward, he turned on his heel and trudged back through the ash-choked debris, returning to the hiking trail through Petalburg Woods. Upon reaching the path, he glanced back over his shoulder at the ghost of someone's life, though he did not know whose.[break][break]

And then he left.
