Every winter, Petalburg City hosted a light sculpture event at its outdoor botanical garden. After sunset, visitors arrived to explore the grounds and marvel at the displays. Some arrived with family, others with friends, and others… well.[break][break]

The botanical gardens were considered a perfect date spot.[break][break]

Zev stood at the entrance, dressed in casual yet warm clothing. One hand held a small gift bag stuffed with tissue paper; buried underneath was a perfume bottle he'd procured with the help of Aurelie Lefevre. Blue eyes watched the path leading from the parking lot, seeking the familiar face of the woman he was supposed to meet.[break][break]

Finally, Zev caught sight of her walking toward him, elegant as ever. His face broke out in a smile.[break][break]

"Hey!" he called out, waving his free hand at her. When she finally reached his side, he offered his arm to her. "You look dazzling tonight, Nenet."

Nenet wasn't technically late, but finding Zev in this crowd was proving to be difficult. Despite the added height of her heels, trying to find a black-haired, tall man in a sea of people seemed impossible until the crowd parted just right and revealed him.

A subtle relief washes over her expression at having finally found him, and she lifts her own hand as she calls, "There you are!" As she stands at his side, arm linking with his, she smiles warmly and presses a quick peck on his cheek by way of greeting.

"Thank you." Her free hand reaching out, she tugs at the bottom-front of Zev's jacket as she remarks, "I like this colour on you."

She the says, "I can't believe the crowds, I thought I'd never find you. Let's find somewhere a little quieter?"

The kiss was a surprise, considering how little Nenet enjoyed public displays of affection. Zev did not protest, however; instead, he pulled her closer by their linked arms.[break][break]

"I guess everyone had the same idea as us," he said, glancing around at the sea of visitors. "I'm sure we can find a cozy spot somewhere in the garden."[break][break]

They made their way through the front gates and started strolling down one of the less congested paths. All around them, winter flowers bloomed between sculptures fashioned from lights. The soft glow filled the garden, evoking an atmosphere of romance and gentle intimacy.[break][break]

The path led them beneath a ceiling of lights arranged to look like a carpet of hanging wisteria. Purple light bathed them, the effect dreamlike.[break][break]

"I got you something, by the way," Zev said, holding out the small gift bag toward Nenet. "Go ahead and open it."[break][break]

In the bag, she would find an elegant green bottle of perfume nestled in a bed of delicate tissue paper.

Nenet hums in agreement as she glances around at the surrounding crowd. Her arm yet linked with Zev's as they stroll through the gardens to a more intimate spot; above cascades of purple light ripple around the couple, turning the atmosphere as romantic as it was dreamy.

Her attention shifts when Zev speaks, and her golden eyes fixate with curiosity at the small bag held out to her.

Blinking once, she soon smiles warmly as she scolds without conviction, "I didn't realise we were exchanging gifts early." Unlinking her arm with Zev's, she carefully takes the package as she remarks with a laugh, "You've made me look like a terrible girlfriend now."

With that spoken, she begins to unwrap the bag.

Zev's brain stumbled over the word. Nenet's delivery had been so casual and smooth that he could only assume she'd thought they were dating for a while. Yet she'd never mentioned it before. She'd never used the term 'dating' to describe their relationship.[break][break]

He coughed lightly, feigning awkwardness and embarrassment. "I actually wanted to ask about that."[break][break]

Normally, he made direct demands of others, uncaring for their feelings or reactions to his words. But Nenet only knew Zev as a bar owner, the owner of a cute Lycanroc, and a…[break][break]

And her boyfriend, apparently.[break][break]

"We never said anything official about it, so… we are actually dating, then?" he asked, grateful that the purple light bathing them hid the lack of redness in his cheeks. That was one trick he could not pull off: faking a blush.

Nenet arches a single eyebrow, her expression suddenly blank with a hint of iciness; her golden eyes glance down to the perfume bottle now held in her hands, her expression shifting minutely as she notes it's definitely her favourite brand and fragrance.

Yes, Nenet had made an assumption about their dating status shortly after her birthday - she couldn't remember the last relationship she had that even managed to last through either hers or her significant other's - but surely after all of this time he was jesting?

Zev pulled an extremely well approximation of sheepishness. Her eyebrow arches further.

"Are we not?" she asks levelly. She could salvage this - the embarrassment if they weren't. She also didn't want to for once but that was neither here nor there. This wouldn't be the first time she had misread a relationship, but she did like how Zev had managed to slip into the cracks of her life. He never complained at her cancellations, nor she his.

All in all she thought they were well matched for what they were - two workaholics who put their careers before each other.

Oh. So they were dating.

For once, Zev did not know the appropriate emotion to express. He allowed his gaze to fall to the perfume bottle in Nenet's hands, his mind rapidly assessing his options.[break][break]

On one hand, he could end the relationship at that moment, before it bored him. She would never have to know the traits that eventually made Zev undesirable to women. Growing tensions and demands were an inevitability, one that made him less inclined to entertain partners.[break][break]

However, he and Nenet had been seeing each other with surprising regularity and frequency since the summer. Past relationships — no matter what label Zev gave them — had never lasted this many months. He hadn't grown bored yet, and she hadn't made any new or additional demands of him.[break][break]

If things were still good, why end them?[break][break]

Zev's expression transformed into a smile of relief. He raised his eyes to meet Nenet's. "We are," he said in confirmation. "I just needed to hear it to be sure, I guess. Sorry for the scare."[break][break]

Then, leaning toward her, he reached out a hand to stroke her cheek. He summoned all the charm he knew to wield as his face hovered inches from hers.[break][break]

"Forgive me?"

Nenet gives a slow nod, her countenance yet a touch frosty and laced with the barest undercurrent of uncertainty until Zev lightly strokes her cheek. "Yeah, alright," she finally purrs indulgently, her expression melting; leaning forwards, she presses a soft kiss to his lips, her fingertips delicately touching his cheeks, and then withdraws.

To most it would seem like a perfunctory couple's kiss - for Nenet that was more akin to reckless abandon better saved for the bedroom.

Then glancing down at her hand to where the bottle is held and she offers, "Thank you for the perfume, it's wonderful." She cups the bottle and lightly tips off the cap, allowing its fragrance to spill onto the air before recapping it.

Tucking the bottle away into her clutch, Nenet then laces her arm with Zev's once more and demands playfully, "Show me these gardens." She smiles, and the soft purple light frames her elegantly-styled hair like a halo.

A smug satisfaction unfurled in Zev's chest when Nenet accepted his explanation. He kissed her back with an intimate tenderness, his other hand alighting on her waist. It was a bolder display of public affection than she'd ever allowed before. Perhaps, he thought, such permission hinted at the true depth of her feelings for him.[break][break]

Zev held Nenet close as she linked her arm with his once more, his hand covering hers, holding it against his bicep. "Your wish is my command," he said with an easy smile.[break][break]

He led her down the well-traveled path beneath the purple lights until they ended. More sculptures awaited them, arranged in artful display between rows of winter blooms. The couple fell into a comfortable silence punctuated by the occasional comment, as was their habit.[break][break]

"After this, do you want to grab a bite to eat, then return to my place?" Zev offered after a while of quiet strolling.
