The Hoenn heat was intense. At first, when Summer Atreides had woken from that dream about Galar, she had appreciated the sunlight and the warmth. Galar had been cold and gray in comparison, from what blurry memories she could recall. But each day she stepped outside, part of her wished she could go back.[break][break]

Not entirely. There were aspects of Circhester she missed. And she was grateful that she had validation of these memories from Gunner Graves. But imminent war was something she was happy to be away from.[break][break]

As work didn't distract her enough, Summer took a day off from work to go to the pool in Sootopolis. It was only open for certain individuals and high-class, with a swim up bar.[break][break]

She currently lounged on one of the chairs that was partially submerged in the water, managing to stay cool while catching some of the sun's rays at the same time. In her right hand, she held an alcoholic beverage, a frozen sex on the beach. Her sunglasses covered her eyes, which were closed until she heard the door opening to let someone in.[break][break]

Summer peaked over her glasses, spotting a male figure entering the area. "Oh, hello, hot stuff—" she began to say to herself.[break][break]

Until she realized who it was. "Shit. Not you. Why the hell are you here?" she grumbled when Cain Toman came fully into view.

To say that there were a number of things on his mind would’ve been a smidge of an understatement.[break][break]

There were, admittedly, a number of things that had him on edge ever since the shackles of a tarnished home had been broken, rendering him free from its grasp and able to return to life as he knew it. Within the first years of his confinement, it had been his sole goal—alongside the goals of others at the time, undoubtedly—to return to Hoenn and settle themselves back into the society that they loved, despised, or anything and everything in between.[break][break]

Yet a swift return hadn’t been written in the stars; the fragile, fleeting memories of days long passed instead filling the gaps and providing their own within his waking hours.[break][break]

His empire had still been going strong, even if it took him longer than was favorable to readjust. His own lifeblood had been more than secured, yet as the memories of war and loss still dwindled within his mind—[break][break]

(Outta sight, outta mind.)[break][break]

—he found himself in desperate need of relaxation.[break][break]

So with the blaring heat of the Hoenn region as an excuse, he’d dressed simply and packed equally as so before heading to one of the rooftop pools he’d known of. With nothing save than slim fit shirt, a pair of trunks to match it, and a cap to shield his eyes from the sunlight above, he’d pushed the door to the exclusive place open, giving those already within little to no mind as he began to walk through.[break][break]

Then came the reckoning.[break][break]

A familiar voice— one that he recognized begrudgingly and reluctantly before properly registering the face of Summer Atreides sitting along the poolside. He stared for a few moments before his brows knitted together, inhaling deeply and sighing before beginning to walk again— though that time around, with a newfound disdain to his stride.[break][break]

”Could say the fuckin’ same t’ya,” he grumbled, haphazardly tossing the bag he’d brought with him onto one of the free chairs (specifically away from her? specifically away from her). ”Wasn’t fuckin’ aware they let cows lounge freely ‘round here, now. Fuck’s sake…”

What Summer Atreides had learned from her several encounters with Cain Toman after their first meeting was the more she reacted to his insults, the more pleasure he'd get. It inflated his already massive ego, and ARCEUS knew she didn't want to handle that more than she had to.[break][break]

She'd come to the pool to relax and escape from trouble, not wrestle with it. Though, it seemed that she'd have to at least play with the fire a bit before she left.[break][break]

"You know, I'd like to help you out, Cain. Which way did you come in? Need to find the way back out?" she said, pointing toward the gate.[break][break]

"There it is. If I throw you a stick, will you leave?" Summer clapped her hands together, pretending he was a dog before snickering to herself and sipping from her drink.[break][break]

It was no secret in team Rocket that Cain and Summer didn't get along. After a paired mission where the two bickered and argued endlessly, it was common knowledge that putting them on a team would end in hell or worse — a failed or compromised mission.[break][break]

Summer rose from the chair, setting her drink down on the table beside her. She took several waltzing strides over to him, only stopping short when she was in front of him. Her arms crossed over her chest as she regarded him with a cold gaze, peering over her sunglasses.[break][break]

"Choose a different pool, Toman. This one's taken."[break][break]

Behind her, her HISUIAN ZOROARK prowled closely behind, regarding Cain with an apathetic gaze. The bartender at the swim-up bar called out to them. "No fighting in the pool area!"[break][break]

Rolling her eyes, Summer reached out, her palms pushing flat against Cain's chest to push him into the pool instead, all whilst sticking her tongue out childishly.

It seemed like the words spoken at him had gone through both ears unattended, a faint and wry smirk tugged upon his lips as he briefly crouched down by the chair he’d claimed, though that selfsame smirk had blossomed into a proper grin as a laugh left him.[break][break]

”Ooooh, ‘Which way did ya come in?’ Ohhh, ‘If I throw ya a stick, will ya leave?!’”[break][break]

Did his voice raise multiple, annoying octaves while talking? Absolutely.[break]
He gave a scoff before it returned to its normal tone, all while he continued to unzip his bag.[break][break]

”That’s what ya fuckin’ sound like. Annoyin’ shitter.”[break][break]

After the bag was opened enough, a small tuft of ashen fur poked out, soon followed by a pair of eyes not quite different than the man before them as he began to pull a number of things out. That selfsame ball of fur eventually climbed out with a small, ambling yip, accidentally falling over the side of the chair and flailing a bit.[break][break]

As if the mishap hadn’t even happened, though, it recovered quickly, only giving those familiar, approaching figures a small look before a glaze of recognition filtered upon its gaze. Another, lower sound rumbled from its maw—something akin of preemptive exasperation, perhaps—before simply finding its way to the water and hopping in.[break][break]

”Bold of ya t’assume I give a damn, lass,” he sighed at first, raising a hand and a very, very specific finger up to her while gathering his bearings. He’d barely found what he was looking for before beginning to stand back up. ”Sucks like shit fer ya— ‘cause if it ain’t big enough fer the two of us, I—”[break][break]

Rudely interrupted.[break][break]

Definitely deserved, but still rudely. Hafren bobbed calmly amidst the waves her trainer made as he hit the water, leaving the Rocket, himself, to resurface after just a moment or so. Drenched to the bone, he stood there for a few moments before slowly running a hand through his hair, effectively combing it back from his face before glaring up at her.[break][break]

He rose his arms in the air in frustration before they fell back into the water with a splash.[break][break]

”Really? Fuckin’ really?” he’d practically barked at her, clicking his tongue. ”What’re ya— a fuckin’ child?”

While the two trainers were busy arguing over literally nothing, Hela noticed Cain Toman's bag rustle. The ZORUA poked her head from the bag, causing the evolved form to tilt her head and sniff at the air. She followed in suit as she decided to dip in the pool.[break][break]

It wasn't as if her trainer noticed. Summer was too caught up with arguing with the giant tree in front of her.[break][break]

"What was that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of you falling for me," Summer said with a wry smirk, crouching at the edge of the pool. It would only be better if she had her drink in her hand right now...[break][break]

She sat at the edge, kicking her feet in the water and splashing him a little bit. "What? I'm just having a bit of fun in the sun. That's what we're supposed to do at the pool," she answered innocently, giving an almost pouting look at him.[break][break]

Hela bobbed on the waves, catching up to the smaller Pokemon with an excited noise. "Hela! You aren't supposed to be playing with the enemy," Summer scolded, momentarily distracted from Cain as she tried to get her ZOROARK'S attention.

”Ah, fuck off ya ragin’ bitch…! Ya couldn’t hear shit if ya even tried…!” the Rocket snapped back almost immediately, his face scrunching further into a look of ever prominent disdain. He began with a brief, ”If ya really wanna hear somethin’, I’m—” in continuation, only to be barked at a second time by the bartender afar as they yelled across the clearing again. At the sound of the second warning, he immediately grit his teeth a bit, a wry grin tugging clear upon his lips as he pressed his tongue against the inner wall of his cheek absentmindedly.[break][break]

Another, deeper breath entered his lungs as the woman began splashing him from the poolside.[break][break]

”...Y’know what? Yeah. Yeah! Yer fuckin’ right,” he started again after a couple of moments, holding a hand up in an attempt to fend the waters away as he waded over. ”Fun! Fun. That’s what we’re here for, yeah?”[break][break]

He reached over for her arm once he’d arrived by the edge, yanking her along and onto his shoulders.[break][break]

”Fun. In. The. Sun!”[break][break]

He lifted her slightly before chucking her into the rippling waters around them.[break][break]

Another wave sent through the waters, naturally— and one that Hafren only continued to ride along with blissful, willing ignorance to the chaos happening just a small ways away. If anything, she merely watched on with an idle gaze before looking towards the similar-furred creature approaching her. Her ears perked up as the other Pokemon floated over, her maw raising from the water’s surface briefly to give them a small yip in curiosity and greeting.

Summer heard the barking warning from the bartender again, who was probably ready to go home at that point. He sounded tired, exhausted, from handling these two specifically. She turned and gave him a sneering look, rolling her eyes as she looked back toward Cain.[break][break]

Her kicking slowed to a halt as he approached her, her brows furrowing as she regarded him with suspicion. "What do you think you're doing?"[break][break]

Suddenly, there was a cool sensation on her arm as he grabbed her arm. Summer lets out a noise of protest, her hat and glasses falling off of her head as he yanked her over his shoulder. She was helpless in his grip — after all, he was much stronger than her, no matter how hard she fought.[break][break]

"Cain! Let go of me!" she hissed.[break][break]

And, well... he did let go. Just not how she wanted him to. Summer was tossed head first into the six foot end of the pool, resurfacing in a few moments with doggy-paddle thrashing. She coughed to expel water that had gone down the wrong pipe, shaking her head as she blindly reached for something to hold onto.[break][break]

Which, so happened, to be Cain.[break][break]

"What the fuck, Cain!" Summer said, swiping water out of her face. She didn't realize it was him she was holding onto until she managed to clear water from her eyes and pushed dripping blue strands from her face.[break][break]

"..." She just stared at him blankly, all while her ZOROARK swam excitedly around his ZORUA.

There was a prideful touch to the spiteful smirk that etched itself upon his lips as he watched her thrashing about.[break][break]

He thought about it for a little while longer, amber hues remaining upon the flailing and splashing mess as it slowly began nearing him. Should one have listened close enough, they may have been able to hear a gentle click resounding within the depths of his mind.[break][break]

Her. Big bad her; boss bitch her; overly bitchy her. It took a bit longer for him to realize what was happening, but when it properly sank in, he thought about moving away for a split second— but in the overarching picture, he decided against it. Rather than moving in any one direction, he merely continued to watch as she paddled her way over, clicking his tongue softly and resting his hands against his hips as she neared.[break][break]

”Hah. Lookit who’s the dog, now~,” he murmured, the glare he wore igniting within a deeper touch of mischievous malice as she reached blindly before finally finding purchase against his arm. As she struggled to gather her bearings, he merely kept his eyes upon her with that same, shit eating grin.[break][break]

She finally seemed to calm down. He touched the tips of his fingers against his forehead.[break]
She moved her hair from her face. He touched the center of his chest.[break]
Her gaze found his. He touched both of his shoulders.[break][break]

”’Hi~.”[break][break]

With a toothiness breaking through the expression upon his face, he closed his arm around her own before leaning himself—and more importantly, her—into the waters beneath them, all while taking advantage of his own height.

"No lifeguard on duty!" the bartender reminded the two of them as Summer flailed and made purchase on Cain's body. His attention was on the glasses that he was polishing, trying to ignore the two.[break][break]

Summer didn't hear him, since she had been partially submerged and was busy trying not to drown in the process. Luckily, she didn't die that day — unluckily for Cain, she'd live another day to antagonize him further.[break][break]

Though, she really began to regret coming to the pool when she made eye contact with him. He had that shit eating grin that reeked with arrogance and egotism. He had an advantage over her, and that was height. Well, and her inability to properly swim. And she couldn't move fast enough.[break][break]

"Cain—"[break][break]

She barely had time to take a breath as he took his arm around her and dunked them both back into the water. Summer kicked at him furiously, trying to swim out of his grip and get back to the edge of the pool.[break][break]

When she resurfaced, she managed to get to a part where she was able to stand and glare daggers at him. "You fucking dickhead! I swear, I will murder you—"[break][break]

"Alright, that's it. Outta the pool! Go fuck and makeup somewhere else. I'm sick of your shit. Both of you are banned for the rest of the day," the bartender shouted, pointing to the gate.[break][break]

Summer scowled, glowering at at Cain as she pulled herself out of the water. She dried the dripping water off of her, recalling Hela from the pool. "Don't think we're done, Toman," she spat, chugging the rest of her drink before slamming the glass onto the bar and exiting the pool area.
