CONTRARY TO ITS NAME, THE MAJORITY OF THE ULTRA DEEP SEA IS A VAST CAVE-LIKE WORLD. Shafts of light from an unknown source barely penetrate the dark, causing colorful diamond-like rocks to glisten against humid walls. The dim lighting makes the place seem like you're thousands of leagues under the sea... Eerily, an unceasing pulse can be heard like a heart beat that rumbles throughout the realm.[break][break]

Oddly enough, one is able to "swim" through this realm like Water-type Pokemon floating in air.[break][break]

One may stumble upon deep, cold pools of dark water and alien seaweed as they scout out the realm. Segments of this place open up into an astral sea, where islands of mysterious stone are suspended mid-air.

Ever since the search for the Seal Stones, the nature of Utra Deep Sea had been more elucidated. This was no ocean, but the innards of a world-sized, eldritch Pokemon.

It was also the resting place of thousands of Pokemon, and arguably, the most dangerous of all the rifts. Charming place to bring your friends.

Callan floated across the surface of the sea, alongside his Toxtricity, Bowie. With its SPOTLIGHT, the illumina energy charged Toxtricity expelled a wide berth of light rays, allowing the group to sink further down into the endless abyss.

This one in particular, seemed to be located near the lining of some form of intestinal tract.

Ultra Beasts floated across a thin membrane of crystal, the Nihilego float in the thousands, separated only by such a membrane. Viewing the three of them as harmless, for now, until damage was done to the host body, the 'white blood cells' would not attack.

"Nice and cheery location." Callan mused, but his tone implicated the severity, "One wrong move and thousands of Nihilego are going to swarm down on us for an attack."

"And the place is volatile, see that?" Callan turns towards Yujin Ha and DEREK HOFFMAN, pointing towards a mass of red crystal. "That meteorite will create a space-time distortion if enough force strikes it. Could be handy, or a death sentence. But be careful of using your moves in here."

This wasn't exactly the place to be if he wished to forget it all. Memories of this place flow like a steady current, washing through the cracks of a psyche broken by twenty long years. Caution is the only sentiment that brings Derek's mind to the present—The countless Nihilego swarming overhead as they continue their descent.

The red crystals warrant a second glance. They stir notions of his handiwork in a past life. Possibilities that have passed through his fingers, but nothing he can be certain about.

"Probably best if we leave them as a last resort." As they navigate around them, Derek's flashlight illuminates the remains of several deceased...people? Not quite.

"These don't look Hoennian to me." The insignia declared on their suits suggested they came from Megalopolis. "Make sure you don't fall behind, Yujin." Lest she want to join this pack of skeletal remains. They probably weren't equipped to tackle all the obstacles this place had to offer. A small nod suggests Callan to lead the way, while Derek stays back to play caboose and guard the rear.

As Derek slowed, Yujin would glide past him. Her eyes were wholly focused on the two devices in her hands: the left, an Interpol-encrypted PDA; the right, a digital abstractor, with all the functions of the usual inclinometer, compass, echolocator, and—

Basically, it encompassed most of the usual cave surveying tools in digital form. Similar to how a phone knows which way is up and down, or how 360 cameras can edge locate—

Etcetera, etcetera approximately modern technology.

A soft, beeping light that periodically emitted from the abstractor’s box captured the information around them, displaying a rough rendering saved in her handheld.

She almost forgot to look up every now and then. Field service engineering had changed a lot these days.

“A bit further down seems to be a plateau. It’s as good a place as any to make the first camp, no?”

Though the proximity of the nihilego soured that premise.

"Well, the Megalopolans definitely get around." Callan's Rotom Phone buzzed alive, spinning towards the corpses and snapping pictures, before zipping away from danger.

Yujin had been engaging in secret agent antics for a while now. Callan had no idea what was in her hands, but the echolocator would be immensely helpful, detecting a plateau in the midst of emptiness. Callan heard Yujin, in any case.

"Bowie, shine your light where Yujin specifies so we avoid plummeting into oblivion, if you please."

His Toxtricity's SPOTLIGHT pierced the blackness, spreading out. They would find a solid flat surface jutting out of the 'gut wall,' extending outwards into what appeared to be a cavern.

"Terra firma is preferable to descending infinitely into stygian darkness, I'll grant you." Callan agreed as he glided down towards it with Bowie, the others in tow.

He landed on solid ground. Bowie instinctively moved towards the cavern's entrance to scout for danger. Its spotlight illuminated the cavern's entrance.

It led nowhere, a dead end, but also did not lead into a breach in the gut lining. It seemed like a section of hardened cyst.

Callan stared at the flat surface they had landed on, the striations in the ground looked remarkably like coral. "Looks like an injury in the stomach that's healed." He noted.

"Let's camp here. It'll be good to grab readings from this position." Callan entered the cavern opening. "I'm gonna set up the tents. Can you guys do the surveillance equipment? Also, I can't cook anything except cup noodles." Callan took out the iron rods expanding out of his rucksack, driving the spikes into the hardened scab.

"...Guess that makes me cook and laborer." I'm basically their bitch at this point. Though Derek already figured as much. He just took a moment to gripe a little. At least it was easy work, with little to no risk involved...except maybe burning their food. But that meant he'd be eating burnt food as well. Derek wouldn't endure that just to stick it to'em.

The quiet homeostasis is in stark contrast to the time they sieged this place—when they failed to secure the seal stone(s) from rocket. And where Derek failed to keep annalise henderson safe. It's hard to shake the feeling that something would go wrong. It always does when he's around. That's just his luck.

"So what's all this stuff for, anyway?" Obviously Derek can't recognize the equipment he's setting up. "Any of it monitor the seal stone?" Being able to tell when rocket used them seemed like it could be useful, right? But maybe there was something else the league was looking into. More mundane intel, probably...

“No, silly,” she said as she pulled out blackened poles from her bag, comically long until they were separated with a snap. “You’re here to keep me safe.”

She’d hand the objects over to Derek with instructions to place them by the camp entrance, sending him off with a bemused smile.

Next, Yujin would force a theodolite into the ground. “Mr. Young, can you really not cook?” The disappointment felt pouty.

“…We’re too far yet to measure that. This is all standard reading equipment that scientists bore us over, and most of the information will be irrelevant.”

And yet, even as they worked, some of the darkened, crystalline scar within the ‘cave’ would begin to stir and agitate.

"Rocket's got the stone now, I doubt that we're monitoring for their activity. If anything I wager it's kept somewhere in Hoenn." Callan replies. "It's just a pathfinding exercise. We still doesn't know much about this location, aside from that it's a massive Pokemon."

"I can cook, I make a great cup noodle." Callan snickers, as he pitches out the tent to spread into a large, igloo shaped tent able to house for three.

"Great, more sinking into the abyss tomorrow. Cheery." Satisfied with his handiwork, Callan dusts off his hands and begins to help Derek with setting up the monitoring equipment. "This is surprisingly calm, for an expedition."

A cold, uninvited frisson runs up the length of Callan's spine. But Bowie, his Toxtricity, reacts faster. It leaps in front of Callan, barrier in hand, as it PROTECTS its trainer from Toxic Spikes. Hexagonal barriers reflect light as they deflect an oncoming spray of sharp missiles.

Caltrop-like crystals fire outwards, lethal snowflakes, towards the group. "Look out!" Callan yells, though his warning comes too late.

A Nihilego emerges from the shadows, having carefully camouflaged itself against the wall of the scab.

They were intruders, and it was in danger. The parasites must be culled.

JOURNEY IV: ULTRA DEEP SEA

[attr=class,bulk]Brooding over his failures, the small talk in the background wanes like a dying ember. Derek is hardly paying attention by the time Callan shouts out a warning, causing him to be struck in the side of his arm by TOXIC SPIKES. "Shit!" A quick hand reaches for his pokeball, clicking the orb just in time. The poison, a known neurotoxin, quickly targets his mind—hacking into his systems and leaving Derek physically unable to resist further.

Words come to mind. Something of a joke about this poison being the 'good shit'. But Derek couldn't manage much of anything, let alone speak. They'd only hear a pained groan as the ranger falls flat on his face, the Nihilego quickly advancing to achieve symbiosis.

The psychic is quick to pick up on the situation. The range of emotions between shock and panic. Derek's internal distress in particular. It's agitating to her, providing a great amount of distraction. She looses her PSYCHIC strength, but the power does little to deter the parasite from latching an arm onto Derek's head, dragging him inside.

As the ranger's body shifts upright, the others would find themselves facing down hollow brown hues—Eyes devoid of any sense of camaraderie. A tentacle reaching for his belt would reveal another pokeball. The SHADOW STEELIX that came of it boasted a terrible temper, one which would be familiar to the elite four member across from them. And though it went against every last fiber of his being, Derek had no control as he mouthed the command... "KILL. THE. GIRL."

Yujin was close enough to the monitoring devices to duck behind them, hearing the metal rattle and groan from the impact of spikes. She then had a front row seat to Derek’s transformation.

"KILL. THE. GIRL."

It was an old reflex that prompted the ‘engineer’ to reach into her jacket. But she hadn’t made up her mind on what exactly she was grabbing for until her eyes glanced over to Callan, making a minute decision.

She pointed the little device straight at the ranger: a sliver of light shot across the cave like a silken thread. It would be followed by a high, but not lethal, current of electricity meant to incapacitate.

Right after the taser, she reached for a pokeball—but a tentacle would snap around her ankle in all of the commotion and pull, causing Yujin to likewise hit the dirt, being flung across the floor and right into the path of a likely angry, likely agitated steelix.

No sooner had the toxic spikes fired than chaos erupted. Callan steadied himself, reaching for a Pokeball as he watched an Nihilego encapsulate Derek.

He knew Derek was no longer in control.As Derek robotically grabbed a Pokeball, Callan threw his own. He could only pray he'd come out unharmed.

His trusted Metagross emerged from the Ultra Ball. Before Yujin's taser could fire at the brainwashed Derek, Callan's Metagross began to prep STEEL ROLLER.

Levitating rapidly, the titan spun into a crushing wheel, shredding the toxic spikes below as it sucked them in. Grinding ahead, it sliced the tentacle dragging Yujin toward Steelix, freeing her. Still spinning with intense force, Metagross would collide into the Nihilego possessing Derek, slamming it, and Derek into the wall.

The Nihilego would cushion Derek's impact.

Meanwhile, Callan recalled Toxtricity and released Donnie, his ace fighter Urshifu. It stood ready before Steelix, poised for Callan's command, preventing easy access to the glib Interpol agent behind it.

The taser stuns the Nihilego, and Derek as well, making it next to impossible to avoid the STEEL ROLLER. Derek and the symbiote are mauled by the metal behemoth, rendering it's connection to the ranger's mind. The Hatterene soon rips Derek free of it's clutches, sending the parasite squirming into a corner. Regretting it's arrogance as the alleged hunter.

Subjugated to a sudden jolt before being rid of the Nihilego host, Derek writhes internally, though finds consciousness. Toxins building up in his bloodstream and organs stress his systems beyond the brink. The Hatterene scoops him up with it's hair, revitalising it's trainer with wondrous AROMATHERAPY. His eyes finally begin to see. Fingers start to twitch...

And yet the height of their troubles is the Steelix looming overhead. The creature swipes along the ground with it's tail, sending a SHADOW RAVE towards everything but Derek and his Hatterene—spelling disaster for the Nihilego, who finds itself completel eviscerated by umbral sinew.

Yujin slid to a halt in the middle of the cave, and then promptly sat up.[break][break]

Stranded in the middle of a fight between an ultra beast, a shadow pokemon, and a legendary pokemon was not the place to be.
Her own pokeball that had come loose clattered on the ground and twitched once, then twice. Then the porygon-z emerged, just at the moment the SHADOW RAVE swept the space.[break][break]

The urshifu probably had her covered, but even lab rats develop some affection.[break][break]

Byzantine moved in front of her as well, pixel-squares articulating around it as it tried to CONVERSION 2 but failed. One could almost see the confusion and sweat bead down its 'neck', but that was quickly extinguished by a very palpable glare towards the steelix and his remarkably familiar trainer.[break][break]

“Not Derek!!” Yujin yelled, waving a hand at the porygon-z, who (reluctantly) swiveled its head at the last moment, blasting a brilliant, pinkish PSYBEAM at the poor, cornered nihilego instead.

The Shadow Steelix, Callan had faced it once before, and it was not a pleasant matchup to be on the receiving end of.

Its Shadow Rave ripples outwards towards the three of them.

Callan unclips a second ball, tossing out his Toxtricity just in case.

Donnie (Urshifu) leaps in front of Yujin Ha and her Porygon, witholding the wave of shadowy corruption with its hands. With a concerted growl, it shatters the shockwave with a clenching motion, its front is seared with umbral scarring.

Meanwhile, Callan's Toxtricity (Bowie) tosses a second barrier of PROTECT, now that it had switched it appropriately, the SHadow Energy shatters the hexagonal barriers, Callan and Bowie untouched.

Light emanates from Callan's prayer beads. A bright, magenta double streak of light glows from one of its gems, Urshifu's Mega-Stone. He brings the bracelet to his chest and taps it with his fingers, as Urshifu expels in a streak of light, MEGA-EVOLVING. The wounds it received from the SHADOW RAVE healing alongside the mega-evolution.

As Yujin's Porygon-Z would hastily fire off a Psybeam towards the Nihilego, Callan's Urshifu with it's improved stats, launches into the Steelix, disappearing from sight with its UNSEEN FIST, and rebounding from the cavern walls, delivers a CLOSE COMBAT blow to the STEELIX's frame, just enough to knock it out unconscious.
