Summer break was here and Slateport couldn't get any stuffier. To be honest, it was about time he got away from the big city. He was a country boy at heart.

And sometimes the urban jungle could become a bit too much for him to handle. So, he took a bus, and took himself the farthest away from civilization he could find.

On route 101 to be exact. Just outside Littleroot Town. A cozy and comfortable little place in the middle of the woods. He would go into the town proper. But wanted to get some fresh air first. And possibly observe some Pokemon in their natural environment.

And if super, super, lucky maybe some of them would like to come live with him! For now, the young college student relaxed and enjoyed the nice, clean, breeze. Free of pollution and incredibly refreshing...

Before his suspension, Josh dreaded doing patrol hours for the Rangers. They were boring and paid little compared to working tickets, especially dangerous tickets. Action was what got his blood pumping, particularly the action of a high-speed competition. After his suspension, though, doing patrol hours without compensation was something he loved. It let him log hours of community service doing something he enjoyed: being out in the wilderness while astride one of his Pokémon, helping those who needed help. It was way better than stocking shelves at some hole in the wall in Mauville's slums.

Josh's Sawsbuck steed, Din, pranced about the dirt road connecting Littleroot and Oldale whilst flaunting the extensive, green growth from her antlers. Dressed in Elite Ranger blue, Elliot may have recognized the young man as a celebrity if he paid attention to the Gym circuit at all. It would have been more apparent with the kind of speed the grass-type was putting on bounding down the opposite side of the road. It was far faster than Sawsbuck had any right to be. A quite-large Manectric, also wearing riding gear, tailed the hooved Pokémon.

Though the weather was stifling. The breeze was a welcoming balm on the skin. Cooling the sweat-drenched youth as he wiped his forehead. Brushing his sticky bangs that were now plastered on the top of his head. Luckily, he brought some water with him. As he put the canteen to his lips the rustle of a nearby bush caught his attention.

In a flash a pokemon darted out and stole his canteen! "Wait!" He said in shock as he attempted to follow it through the brush. What he got for his troubles was an empty water flask and an apologetic Smeargle.

It too seemed to be suffering from the heat wave. And simply wished for a drink of water to quench it's thirst. Letting out a sigh, he smiled. Realizing it meant no harm. Instead he offered it a cooler place to rest in a pokeball. "You don't have to stay with me of course. You're free to go whenever you wish." He expressed honestly.

The Smeargle tilted it's head before touching the ball and going inside it without a single shake. Picking up the capture device he would notice the sight of a young man riding aloft a Sawsbuck. With another pokemon following in their stead. And wow! Were they huge! "Oh! Sir! I didn't notice you there! How are you today, mister Ranger?"

The young man's voice got Josh's attention, causing him to rein Din to a stop. The grass-type had overshot Elliot, making him and his Manectric turn around to face the traveler's way. "Wonderful. I'm glad I could snap up patrol hours out here than on a more open road like 117. At least there's shade out here," he chuckled, any perspiration Saber shed immediately electrolyzed from the latent static he was emitting.

"Elite Ranger Devlin or Gym Leader Devlin, but I prefer to go by Josh," the Pokémon racer introduced himself. "These two are Din and Saber," he introduced his Sawsbuck then his Mancetric, the grass-type's antlers abundant with explosive growth. The Manectric loosed a greeting bark that came with the sound of crackling electricity. "Hope you're keeping cool! We've got a heat advisory out there for the next several days. If you don't have a water Pokémon or an ice Pokémon with you, I'd recommend turning back to Littleroot's Pokémon Center and withdrawing one if you haven't already."

Elliot's eyes widened slightly at the Elite Ranger's - now announced as "Josh Devlin" Mauville Gym Leader. Of all the places to meet a Gym Leader! And one so far away from their Gym! The brunette's eyebrows furrowed in thought. Why was he out here though? Sure he was a Ranger. But wouldn't his Gym duties be more important than patrolling routes? Perhaps he was out of the loop. He had only been in this region for a month or two, after all.

"It's nice to meet you Sir... I mean Josh! I'm Elliot. Elliot Langley!" He smiled despite sweating from the heat. "Anyw-" A shrill cry shouted out over his voice as a Rufflet flew down from it's safe spot in the trees. It looked tired as though the heat was bothering it as well. It stumbled as Elliot cradled it close.

Noticing it's high temperature. Wincing, he took what remained of his canteen and fed it the last bit of water. This seemed to soothe it somewhat. As it opened tired eyes. "You don't have to stay in, but if you got into this Pokeball i'll be able to get you to a Pokemon Center where you can be cared for better."

Elliot explained to the baby bird pokemon. As it looked at him before tapping the center of the sphere - capturing itself by its own accord. That was another one who would do anything to escape this heat wave... Standing up. He turned his attention to the Gym Leader. A serious expression on his face.

"I need to get to Littleroot Pokemon Center. To get these pokemon some proper care. Do you mind guiding me there, please?" He asked earnestly. Hoping to get the poor pokemon somewhere cool and safe with water so they wouldn't die from heat stroke. But it was still some ways away... How could they possibly get there in time? "I need to save them!"

"Great to meet you, Elliot," Josh replied, offering what may have been an awkward handshake due to how high he was sitting off the ground. "No need for formalities with me. "I'm based out of Mauville, but I'll go anywhere in Hoenn to find Pokémon and people in need. Great for my Pokémon, too. Plus, it's fun; feeling the wind in your face is something else."

The sweltering heat was affecting a wild Servine, too, the poor Grass-type's body yellow instead of a vibrant green. The normally smiling face of the grass snake was instead one of exhaustion. Breathlessness, even. He, too, pleaded with the wild to allow it to be taken to Littleroot, which it was happy to oblige. What little choice did it have? The heat was relentless.

"I can more than guide you there; I'll get you there in a hurry." With that, the Gym Leader sent out a serious, aggressive-looking Dragonite, whom he was quick to hop on. "This is Tiamat," Josh introduced the tall, orange dragon normally known for its gentle demeanor. This one, though, looked ready to race toward Littleroot at Josh's command, showing neither rider mercy. "Got any goggles or some way to protect your eyes?" he asked. "If not, you'll want to sit as close to me as you can and shield your eyes the best you can. This is gonna be fast."

Provided both of them were safely and securely atop Tiamat, Josh gave the command to take off. With rapid, bird-like flaps of her small wings, the two took to the air, gaining height more rapidly than bird Pokémon did. The two could see the sea from where they were at, the Gym Leader's Pokémon accelerating west. Once they were well clear of Oldale Town, Josh respected Elliot's urgency by kicking things into high gear. "Hold on tight, Elliot!" he warned as he slammed his racing helmet's visor into place. "Tiamat, EXTREME SPEED!"

The prelude to the crazy speed the dragon was capable of was the sound of her small wings humming, vibrating like an insect's. Purple dragon energy surrounded the Pokémon and riders as their mount leaned into the wind before executing the fastest speed move a common Pokémon was capable of. The riders hay have felt like they were being flattened against the acceleration while Tiamat got up to speed. It didn't take too long before total silence surrounded them all, the Dragonite speeding past her own sound waves.

It would take them under five minutes to fly from Oldale to Littleroot.

"Thank You. Really." Elliot praised Josh with earnest admiration. However, before he could focus on getting on the riding pokemon. He noticed a Vileplume in the corner of his eye. It was hiding in the shade. Trying avoid the sun, of all things! Walking up to it. He spoke to it softly before also putting it into a pokeball. After it seemed to agree with his offer.

Pocketing the pokeball he nodded and took his place on Tiamat. Holding on to Josh he kept his eyes closed as the power of Extreme Speed assaulted his senses. His breath left him as he found it hard to breathe. Breathing through weak lungs he gasped he swallowed deep gulps of air. Finding it hard for his lungs to function for a moment. It too but five minutes but it felt almost instantaneous.

Giving Josh a soft yet slightly awkward and tired smile. "W-Well t-that was an experience for sure!" Putting his hands on his knees he finally found his footing before he stood up normally. [break][break] "Let's go into the Pokemon Center, now, shall we? We need to get these poor things checked out for any burns or dehydration." He expressed holding the pokeballs in his hands before clutching them to his chest as he made his way inside the far cooler building.

Even for Josh, Tiamat's EXTREME SPEED was one wild ride that shook him up. Being deprived of hearing, only to have the ears assaulted with a sonic boom afterward, was an experience that was impossible to get fully used to. He couldn't have imagined how terrified Elliot must have been, with how tightly he held onto the Gym Leader. Josh was used to it, though; unlike him, his passengers were seldom trained in the art of super speeds. The Dragonite's wings vibrated like those of a hummingbird while in supersonic flight, adding an alien tactile sense to their already wild surroundings.

Once Josh made sure Elliot was okay, he slid down from Tiamat's saddle. Even he was a bit woozy after being a passenger on the tall dragon's incredible display of speed. "...You okay, Elliot?" Josh asked, only noticing his partner holding his chest after they had dropped the captured Pokémon off to be treated for heat-related illness.

"I-I'm fine! Just... O-Out of breath..." He stated with some gasps. Before standing up a bit wobbly in the legs as he gave Josh a weak thumbs up. "I... have weak lungs. Had them since birth. But I'll be okay! Don't worry!" He gave a more firm and confident smile now that he had gotten his bearings. Not noticing the pokemon that made their way through the town.

He focused on the Ranger/Gym Leader who had helped him so much today. "I want to thank you for all of your help. Without you I fear the worst would've happened to those poor pokemon! Thank you, so much Mister Devlin!... Er... Josh!" Going into the Pokemon Center he waved Josh off, deciding to stay in Littleroot for the night to keep an eye on the heatstruck pokemon that were now in his care. "I hope to see you again sometime! Goodbye!"
