As soon as the simulation was rendered, Zev took in his surroundings. His instincts and training had him look for every exit, every ambush spot, every hiding place. But the room was steeped in shadows, everywhere a deep black except for the table in front of him and THEO BECKETT.[break][break]

Instantly, Zev recognized the woman from Team Rocket's reports on the DRK Triad. His blue eyes narrowed.[break][break]

"She's that woman whose name we don't know," he said to the underboss accompanying him. "Hexenzirkel. Does that sound familiar to you?"[break][break]

Despite the odds, Zev itched to attack. His hand closed around the hilt of a combat knife he kept sheathed at his hip.[break][break]

As soon as Theo threw his knife, Zev lunged at the nearest shadow, plunging his own knife through the narrow space between them. But then a legion of Unown manifested around them and began their own assault.[break][break]

Zev released a few Pokémon he'd brought with him, all seasoned fighters. But neither the members of the Hexenzirkel nor their Unown fell to their attacks or to his blade.[break][break]

Eventually, a HIDDEN POWER smacked him in the back. Instead of pain, however, he felt himself tugged through dimensions, similar to teleportation. The scene around him crumbled away, revealing something different.

He says to you: "fuschia has already fallen. nothing you accomplish here will be of any worth."[break][break]

Should you attempt to step toward him, you'll knock into an invisible wall: an intriguing puzzle for gym challengers, but a frustrating conundrum for those attempting to engage with him.[break][break]

"i'll strike you down before you can even perceive the real me."[break][break]

Suddenly, Walsh disappears. Throughout the gym, multiple "Walshes" appear behind invisible walls. Periodically, he will lunge from a secret space with his GLISCOR, NIDOKING, &/OR HYPNO to attempt to slay you and your Pokemon.

Once the simulation finished manifesting the next scene, Zev took his time to observe their surroundings. Despite being native to Kanto, he'd never set foot in Fuschia's gym. And he hadn't been present there during Rocket's takeover of the region, either.[break][break]

"Not as familiar as I want to be," Zev admitted to Theo as the Rocket boss disappeared. Copies of him materialized in various locations around them, but did not approach.[break][break]

Zev's hand moved to the Pokéballs clipped to his belt. "The real Fuschia gym leader lost that day, didn't they?"

"How should we approach this simulation? Personally, I'm not the kind of man who purposefully chooses to lose," the assassin said to the underboss. "But for the sake of learning everything we can from this machine, we can do that."

it is the natural order of things, after all, to lose to the very top of the food chain. disrupt that order and chaos would follow. he does wonder, however, whether the two of them would be enough to take down the rocket boss.

perhaps they will find out in another life.

Zev nodded, understanding that the need for information trumped his natural instinct to win. He whistled for his own Pokémon. The Gengar attacked one of the mirror images of declan walsh, but it merely vanished.[break][break]

Soon enough, both Zev's and Theo's Pokémon lay defeated on the floor of Fuschia City's gym. The Rocket Beast clamped down on the undirected fury that flared within him. After all, this was just a simulation.[break][break]

It wasn't a real loss.[break][break]
