Gunner had not visited it since the fateful battle in April. And though several months had passed, he still felt the bitterness of the League's loss at the hands of Team Rocket as he trudged through the realm.[break][break]

But the criminals had not found this chamber. Gunner braced himself against the energies that pulsated from the strange minerals and Tera crystals embedded in the flesh-like walls of the space.[break][break]

"I'll act as our shield here," the agent said to his companion, none other than Dr. illeana reyes. He released his Iron Valiant from a Pokéball. "Kahadin, set up a WIDE GUARD around us."[break][break]

The Pokémon obeyed, summoning the shimmering barriers with a wave of its swords.[break][break]

it isn't - not in the way she wishes.

"okay."

she steps back, allowing his iron valiant to raise a shield around them. it encloses them with the mineral veins and, in turn, the core.

her eyes drift toward him, soft around the edges.

"let me know if the radiation is too much."

her pick axe wobbles slightly in her grip, but she still winds up and strikes the nearest mineral veins anyway.

As Illeana began to mine, Gunner kept watch with his Iron Valiant — an action he found difficult to do, as the vast expanse of starry space opened up to him at intervals. He shook his head often, struggling to concentrate.[break][break]

It was strange. He never had this much trouble before. Was it the radiation?[break][break]

Only when the hostile Pokémon began to appear did he snap to laser-focused attention. Sharp commands sent Kahadin forward, striking them down as quickly as possible to protect the chamber.[break][break]

"How are you doing, Dr. Reyes? Need a hand?" Gunner called out as sweat poured down his forehead. Between the adrenaline of the battle and the radiation bearing down on him, his head was starting to ache.

the repetition of it all allows her eyes to wander back to her partner, body continuing on in autopilot.

"okay - i think?"

she glances down at the mined pieces at her feet. they sparkle back up at her.

"i wouldn't mind an extra hand."

although...

her eyes snap up, quick to focus in on gunner. how is he faring? has the radiation dug its claws into his body yet?

"are you doing okay? any pain?"

Gunner grimaced as a wave of nausea hit him, but he walked over to where Illeana was working. A few of the glittering minerals had fallen to the ground at her feet. He scooped them up and deposited them with care into a satchel they'd brought.[break][break]

"I'm okay," he lied. "I can handle a bit more—"[break][break]

All around them, the Poison Tera crystals flashed with an eerie, sickly light. Then images emerged from them, a hazy at first but growing sharper with every passing moment: the poisoned, battle-wounded bodies of Galarian peasantry.[break][break]

Gunner shuddered as they turned and began staggering toward them. "We need to hurry," he said, snatching up more gems from the ground. "Kahadin, can you do something about these?"[break][break]

His Iron Valiant leapt at the manifestations, attacking them with PSYCHO CUT.[break][break]

and maybe he can - maybe she can, too, but they're losing precious time and she can't quite focus on one thing for too long. purple veins spread across the body as she moves. pieces of gems are scooped up, placed delicately in the satchel, and with each clunk, the world spins a little faster.

"okay i think that's every--"

sentiment grows short, chopped in half by manifested bodies dragging themselves into existence. she gasps, legs stumbling backward in surprise.

the peasantry - ones not saved in galar, left to perish on a battlefield long lost to a hazy memory.

she barely remembers them in their entirety, but their sacrifice is not easily forgotten.

and as his iron valiant holds them at bay, she fumbles through trying to grab the remaining crystal chunks. her hands are trembling, sickly grey with purpling undertones in the shifting light from the core's brilliance. faintly, her rushed voice follows. it's panicked, shaky puffs of syllables jumbling together.

"whatever you can grab is fine!"

You must escape with your gathered material. Your ally or allies may be incapacitated by the paranoia settling in their psyches, or perhaps, the eldritch mutations beginning to metamorphose their body or bodies.[break][break]

Depending on how much your characters have mined, you may need to lessen your extracted load to ensure successful escape from this wretched place. After all, the horrors that reside here may make chase.

The radiation became too much to bear. Clamping down on the urge to vomit, Gunner grabbed what he could from the extraction machines and called for his Iron Valiant.[break][break]

What he carried in his hands was not even three-fourths of what he and Illeana had mined, but they couldn't stay any longer. And they could return, perhaps with a bigger team.[break][break]

"I can teleport us back to the rift," he told Illeana as he exchanged his Pokémon for another. His Alakazam emerged in a flash of light. "Merlin, get us out of here!"[break][break]

The air hummed with psychic power as the Pokémon prepared to depart.[break][break]
