Gunner grimaced as he entered the chamber deep in the heart of the Ultra Deep Sea. He did not enjoy being surrounded by the fleshy, organ-like structures that made up the realm. They reminded him all too vividly of the reports that suggested this other world was actually the inside of a gigantic creature.[break][break]

The sight of someone else in the chamber, however, drew him from those unsavory thoughts. Eyes narrowing, he approached with slow, cautious steps. And then, all at once, he recognized the other man.[break][break]

"It's you," Gunner said, eyebrows rising into his forehead in surprise. "Didn't I tell you to stay out of this place? Step back; this area's dangerous."

[attr="class","text"] He didn’t simply wander his way out here, of course. Lam had learned his lesson getting lost out here in the deep sea. This time, he had a map! He knew where to go, and that he could probably expect company whether it was assigned or not. Granted, it was not the company he anticipated.[break][break]

Lam’s own brows lifted at the statement, but a grin managed to work its way across his face—not exactly arrogant, but more like ahaha yeah ya got me. “Mhm, sure is.” His nose wrinkled in thought. “Agennnnt…Graves, right?”[break][break]

He stepped out of the direct range of the radiation, but he didn’t go out of his way to hightail it, either. “I’ve been on a few of these now, so I like to think I’m a little more ship-shape.” Emphasis on little, but Mr. Gunner here didn’t need to know that tidbit.[break][break]

So long as there were no Kanto hallucinations courtesy of HBIC classifieds, should be smooth sailing! Should.

"Oh, have you?" Gunner found that hard to believe, but perhaps lam logan had toughened up since their last foray into the Ultra Deep Sea. Still, he was relieved when the other man took a few steps back.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Gunner released his Stonjourner. The towering Rock-type could provide them with sufficient protection in that chamber.[break][break]

"Lamorak, set up a WIDE GUARD here, please," Gunner said to the Pokémon.[break][break]

Rumbling in response, the Stonjourner summoned the protective, shimmering shield around himself, Gunner, and Lam.[break][break]

[attr="class","text"] “Mmmm yep!” He could tell from Gunner Graves’s tone that he didn’t really believe Lam– “Trust me, I wouldn’t come back here if I didn’t think I could manage it.” That was for sure the truth, evidenced by his prompt movement into setting up.[break][break]

He couldn’t really say he cared to come back even now, with a bit more experience under his belt. But mining this material was meant to help, even if it felt sorta…gross. Like picking a living creature’s teeth for leftover bits or something.[break][break]

“He’s pretty sturdy,” Lam remarked, eyeing the stonjourner from where he worked at mining material. He made use of the added time that the pokemon provided, knowing that sooner or later the radiation would only worsen.[break][break]

Alongside him, his psyduck actually managed to work through her constant migraine for once–waddling back and forth between Lam and the pile of whatever he handed to her for deposit.

Gunner had to accept that Lam was telling the truth. Perhaps he, like Gunner, had found employment with the League; that was the only reasonable explanation for a young man traumatized by the Ultra Deep Sea to return.[break][break]

"Yeah. I can count on him for these kinds of things," Gunner said of his Stonjourner. Lamorak stood motionless as the attacks came, keeping up his defenses so the humans could complete their work.[break][break]

Turning back to the mining machines, Gunner focused on scooping up as many minerals as possible. In the back of his mind, he hoped all their efforts were worth it. After all, the Ultra Deep Sea's dangers went far beyond the physical into the psychological.[break][break]

"Are you holding up okay?" Gunner asked Lam after a while. He glanced sidelong at the other man, trying to gauge his physical and mental state.[break][break]

Of course he felt the creep of unnerving wariness beginning to slink in and curl at the corners of his mind. But it was still manageable. For now. “Are you?”[break][break]

Around them, the barrier began to thrum erratically. As if something was trying to bang down the door, so to speak. Even if the WIDE GUARD additionally around them held longer, whatever was on the outside, seemed determined to get in.[break][break]

Lam grimaced, pausing in his task to look around them, and then stepped toward their accumulated materials. “Looks like our time’s running short. Might be time to pack up.” The pulse of panic was there, under the skin, but he pushed it away. It would be the worst possible time to prove Agent Graves correct.[break][break]

“Peaches,” he looked down at the psyduck, who seemed to have an atypical sense of clarity. Maybe it was the tension of the task. “Get ready to assist with whatever it is out there.”[break][break]

He was met with a honk of agreement, as she prepared to addle the brains of whatever turned up with a CONFUSING psychic pulse.

Beads of sweat rolled down Gunner's face as the panic started to swell inside him. He clamped down on the feeling, determined not to break in front of Lam. "I'm okay. Let's finish this as quickly as possible, though."[break][break]

At that moment, however, Lamorak's WIDE GUARD crumbled. An unnatural creature emerged from the shadows of the cavern, some grotesque mix of a Mismagius and a Dusknoir.[break][break]

"Lamorak!" Gunner shouted. The Stonjourner rumbled, clenching his massive fists. ROCK SLIDE rained down upon the abomination, just as Lam's Psyduck attacked with CONFUSION.[break][break]

After a quick battle, the strange Pokémon cried out and vanished, dissipating as motes of energy.[break][break]

Still, through these translucent barriers, you catch a glimpse of a nearby planet. One that looks suspiciously like the one you all live in—except that a large portion of it seems covered in land.[break][break]

You must escape with your gathered material. Your ally or allies may be incapacitated by the paranoia settling in their psyches, or perhaps, the eldritch mutations beginning to metamorphose their body or bodies.[break][break]

Depending on how much your characters have mined, you may need to lessen your extracted load to ensure successful escape from this wretched place. After all, the horrors that reside here may make chase.

[attr="class","text"]“You sure?” He didn’t press much further than that. There wasn’t any time for it as the warped ghost pokemon…thing… swept into the cavern. Dark, malevolent miasma thrumming around it before SHADOW BALLS hurled themselves in their direction, forcing Lam to duck and roll.[break][break]
“Good job, Peaches.” The praise came after the psyduck followed her initial attack with a second. The HYDRO PUMP sent a cascade of water crashing in the wake of the stonjourner’s ROCK SLIDE. It muddled the earth and turned the area around the amalgamation slick and destructive.[break][break]
It wasn’t difficult to wash it away after that.[break][break]
“Might be best to retreat while we’re ahead,” Lam offered as the creature faded away. “That’s probably just the first of more to come.”[break][break]
Better to get out of there with what they had and not lose any of their progress by having to dump portions of it. As if on cue, an eerie cry reverberated through the chamber. A distant thunder of something approaching, possibly larger.[break][break]
Lam looked over at Gunner, head tipping to the side as he let one shoulder rise and fall—ultimately leaving the final call up to the agent, who perhaps looked a little more strained from all of the effort.[break][break]
Maybe only if Lam squinted, though.
