“Heh.” Temp’s words don’t put a crack in his smile. He paces behind Shuwen, watching the battle of gods taking place in the space between the Rocket and him. Shuwen gives as good as he gets. When the monkey is thrown back into the dirt, he folds his arms, expecting a blow to come. The haymaker rocks his world. Although he does not let it show, it’s a powerful blow. A blow worthy of his brother, wherever his brother is…[break][break]
Yet all Shuwen can do in the aftermath of that blow is mirror his trainer. He smiles. Spitting a glob of blood out, he moves back into a battle stance. He gives a brief thumbs up to the Kubfu before jabbing his fist forward. Surging up, wind rushes around him.[break][break]
His retort to the haymaker is an uppercut. A surge of wind draws around his fist, coursing with the power of the air itself. His aerial ace takes the form of what comes after the uppercut, trying to launch his foe into the air, only to follow after with a barrage of strikes. Why settle for one blow when you could give one thousand? Both Navy and Shuwen share that sentiment.[break][break]
“That’s the grand scam of the gym circuit. Everyone else sees it as education. Me? It’s practice. Good, good practice. See, until you and your hubby beat me til I was almost dead, I was kinda…asleep, I wanna say. You n’ your blond beau woke me up. I’d hate to disappoint you after you did that for me.”

The Kubfu, still peering around Tempest's leg, bounces on her heels a bit. She raises up small fists to drive and strike in the air in some reflecting of what she was watching. From both pokemon- not just the Ushifu she would someday also become. For Navy's mention of learning, it seemed like Tempest had taken advantage of this while he could in other ways.[break][break]

The Ariel Ace slices at Bongo, followed by more jabs. The monkey shrieks in rage, muscled arms raising up to defend his face. It was a very human action, similar to what Tempest had done earlier when he and Navy were still trading their own blows.[break][break]

Only Bongo has Monkey Magic and Tempest did not.[break][break]

A flare of pink winds kicks up, the slicing Fairy energy swirling around them. Dirt and debris whip up into the Springtide Storm, pushing away. Something to hurt as well as the hope to put some more distance between the two of them.[break][break]

Tempest rolls his eyes with a snort.[break][break]

"The Gym Challenge used to just be a sporting match. Then the League turned it into some soldier proving grounds. Doesn't that disgust you? To be part of that propaganda?" It had Tempest. When he had had to argue for his Gym over and over in meetings how it met up with standards that weren't needed in his childhood.[break][break]

"Rocket is a den of snakes, but at least we're honest about it. You rub elbows with wolves pretending to be sheep. Doesn't that make you angry?" There were good people in the League. People who didn't deserve to be in the conflict. People Tempest wished would come to Rocket's side so they didn't have to die.[break][break]

Maybe, in time, he would view Navy as one of them.[break][break]

The fact of the matter was that the League was filled with weak hang wringing fools who refused to do anything. Then when it was too late, they would just shrug at whatever tragedy happened and say it wasn't their fault. Wash their hands of it. That was worse, in Temp's opinion, that the blatant killing and terrorism than Rocket held. The apathy.

Oh, if these stones could talk, the tales they would tell of the things they have heard. They have heard the sound of Shuwen as he stands up and advances. They have witnessed an astounding number of springtime storms. So too have they witnessed much doubt and resentment leveled at the League.[break][break]
And each time, they heard Navy’s retort.[break][break]
“Yep. All wolves at the top, even if Kyle thinks he’s just a dog.” Navy agrees with a nod. “Problem is…the people that go along with ‘em when shit happens. You know how many kids were there at the Ancient Tomb? Eris, Hideo, Vanilla…” Everyone in Hoenn knows everyone. The Sheriff assumes Temp knows these people. They travel in the same circles.[break][break]
“The sheep have wolves for shepherds. That’s fucked up. They get a head full of dumb ideas. Next thing you know, some asshole like you or your husband stabs ‘em. They’re dead. End of story. Someone has to protect the sheep. Someone has to fight the wolves and fight you.” And, as he told Amor, he will be that person. He’ll bear the hatred of children if it keeps them safe from the beasts that lurk in Sootopolis .[break][break]
“I’m not the guy who’s gonna figure out the smart solution, but I can fight. I’ll take you, your buddies, the dark triad, anyone, on any time.”[break][break]
Shuwen’s running across the battlefield, leaping onto rocks. He means to rush down the monster that has entered his domain. Just a few more strikes – a few more and he’s sure he can win this, even as his ears still ring from the storm.

Navy retorts. Instead of a scowl or roll of the eyes or whatever else the other might expect- Tempest smiles. He laughs, a belly laugh, full of cheer. It's not the condescending taunts like earlier, either, tinged with something bloodthirsty and insane.[break][break]

Tempest levels Navy a look. There is an understanding glimmering in his eyes.[break][break]

"They'll bite you, you know. Tear away careful pieces of you. Until they shape you like what they want, make you a wolf just like them." Maybe it's a warning. Maybe Navy is looking at a man bitten too many times by the League.[break][break]

Maybe Tempest was always what he was. It would just be something for the other to mull on if he chose.[break][break]

"You keep being the romantic sheriff for yours and I'll keep being the black knight for mine. We'll see who the history books write as the hero when this is all over." It's a promise. It's a challenge. It's a taunt. It's a secret shared.[break][break]

Shuwen strikes but only finds air.[break][break]

Bongo called back into his pokeball. Another tossed out. A massive Dhelmise floats in front of him. But Tempest only hops up to stand on it's anchor, his Kubfu now hanging from his shoulder.[break][break]

"I've stalled you long enough." The grin, now, is sharp. "My men are done with that I needed them to do. Goodbye, Sheriff."[break][break]

A portal of ghostly shadow opens and Tempest is gone.

“…heh.” He smirks at the declaration. “You really think I didn’t alert my deputies? Oh, I’m having my fun down here, but they know the score. Got my own little pack. I’m not a wolf, and I’m not a sheep. I’m a warrior. I know how you Rockets work. Have fun up there.”[break][break]
Ironsides flies free. Navy boards the old bird. He, too, ascends. They fly through one of the ducts in the roof, rising to go take care of business. If Rocket wants to cause trouble in his town, remote as it is, they will find it no easy prize.
