The way he aims straight for her lifeline means she has to do her best to defend it, but his rapid advancements are hard for her to keep up with. Pain shatters her grip, the phone abruptly dropped as she pulls her wrist away and gingerly cradles it. She winces, hopping a few steps back even as she keeps an eye on Kouji.[break][break]

She hadn't left alone. But now she was undeniably, irrevocably and oh so gutwrenchingly alone. She takes in the darkness of this alleyway, silences a howl of her own and instead bites back with those very eyes -[break][break]

Hurt, for whatever little time they'd spent working together.[break][break]

Betrayal, when she'd been the one to betray.[break][break]

Defiance, quietly smouldering and telling her that she has to survive.[break][break]

This will is what moves her, her attention settling on that one pocket. She knows, she's worked with him enough times to take that step. She has to defang that beast before she's torn apart.

Kouji had leapt back as she jumped forward, not allowing himself to get unbalanced by her strikes. He prepared a punch that sailed over her head, mistimed, was she faster? Or was he just slower? The moment his leg touched back on the floor and he recollected his stance.

It was then that he realized it, that she had taken his knife; where he kept his weapon, it wasn’t the one that held his megastone, no, this knife was far more important than that, it was the one that he had gotten back in that wartorn region.

His eyes narrowed, he bit back the howl of rage, and instead allowed his eyes to glower instead, his golden eyes seemed to shimmer between different emotions, his expressions shifted, before finally settling.

Insecurity, even as he had taken the decisive step without the decisive action.

Betrayal, for the lost trust that sat in her hand.

Rage, as he finally decided to act.

He dashed forward, his leg poised, ready to take the stab to it, but he would crush her wrist, it was a quarter roundhouse aimed towards the wall, his golden eyes narrowed for a moment as he pushed off with his back leg for even greater force.

Why then, does her heart sink when she sees him lunging at her? The tiniest flinch forces her to take a proper step back, but his target isn't what she expects. That shin that collides with her wrist, that ankle that hooks and takes her along for the ride, that horrible slam against the wall as an audible crack resounds. It takes a moment, as her body slams into the wall as well. Pain wells up from the sides from the impact, the way her bare skin scratches against weathered bricks.[break][break]

But it's the aftershock shooting through her arm that makes her let go.[break][break]

Do not scream.[break][break]

The knife clatters to the ground.[break][break]

Do not let them have the satisfaction of hearing you scream.[break][break]

Awkward as it may be, she tries to reach over with her other hand, to push off against the wall and attempt to slam her shoulder right into him. And in doing so, she'll try to push past him, to dive for her phone once more.

The sensation of bones being crushed beneath his feet, the feeling of bones pressing against the bottom of his foot, it was something that usually brought joy, the joy of a certain victory, and yet he struggled to hide the flinch.

It was a disgusting feeling, it echoed through him, it felt like an ichor that built up within his stomach, and grew with the moment, as she tried to jump past him, he jumped past her; towards his knife, grabbing it tightly before he jumped at Eris; with all of his weight.

There was a small grimace, as an acrid feeling built up in his mouth, he knew this sensation well, he was pretending ot not know it, but it wasn’t the first time he was in this position, pointing a knife at someone h-

She can feel the pressure on her shoulder blade, spy the glint of a blade in the small patches of leftover rainwater scattered on the ground. She hisses, she growls. Her fingertips dig ferally, skin ripped as she begins to claw at the ground, debris cutting into her palms as she tries to push up against Kouji. He gripped the blade tightly in his hand, the handle of the knife dug into his skin; his arm began to shake; his elbow creaked with every inch of movement. He felt her fighting back against him, he knew he could end up being pushed off.

But he pushed back; it bought time, which had been his ally earlier in his engagement had now become his tormentor. It was a swirling whirlwind which had begun from the depths of his mind, in a tense battle such as this, he could he find a moment, and in a rush such as this, each moment might as well have been a topaz, each second was a ruby, every bit of time was a precious jewel known as thought. The lustre of which was a possibility, a different future he could have imagined, a different outcome; yet he crushed that into dust. He shut out the world, it rapidly faded and the external world ceased to exist. He resolved himself for what he needed to do.

Amidst the silence of his mind, the only thing he could hear was the beating in his ears, the rushing of blood, the pace of his breathing. This building cacophony of turmoil began anew, the cadence of which grew more and more. He raised the glinting knife into the air. The scant sounds that existed at the edge of his periphery turned silent, the world began to hold its breath for a moment, as if mourning the impending tragedy. His muscles grew tense, his arm grew heavy, and his eyes locked onto her.

It all built into the very moment he had tried to avoid this whole time, he had to do this, he had taken it into his own hands. It was a weight had chosen to bore, even if it caused his knees to quake, his shoulders to tumble, his back to creak. ”Maybe…You’ll find peace in the next life.” It was a somber tone, a voice that cracked, and that crack was the first crack in his resolve.

A heavy sound, steel meeting cement, tarmac; it resounded in a high pitched screech before cracks echoed in that hallway, a moment that should have been a fraction of a second felt far far longer. And then it shattered, the knife of his broke into pieces, blood dripped down the now empty handle.

Even then, her disappearance will be nothing more than a blip before the multitudes of worlds that must await them, the countless eyes that watch their dimension.[break][break]

Bracing herself is a trained reflex. She knows what must come next, the words he speaks bringing so little comfort to the table. What lies on the other side isn't something she can be certain of, whatever glimpses of peace just bubbling up and popping like mere foam upon an ocean of regrets.[break][break]

The blade drops, then shatters before her very eyes. Her reflection is fleeting, eyes wide and staring back at her.[break][break]

Why did you think things could end just like that?

Hesitance breathes a moment of opportunity into her lungs, a rush of air pushing from the bottom and raking its way up her throat. Roaring at the earth that sleeps even whilst she bleeds, at those who lovingly crafted this wretched world for her to stay in, she pushes and shoves Kouji to the side. Momentum pushes her whilst anger pulls, the girl -[break][break]

This creature, now hovering over him as she pushes him down.[break][break]

What lays before her isn't... it isn't him. Reality hides from her as her fingers gently wrap around his neck. There's no space in her mind for the thrumming of her heart, for the hastening breaths, for the trembling hands.[break][break]

Vermilion burns, and so too do her scars.

It was a haze, he could see the reflection in the pieces of steel, that person that stared back at him, the golden glint distracted him; eyes lacking lustre, two of them, not the one he had gotten used to staring at.

He felt the shifting of weight, but his eyes weren’t on the person, Eris, below him, but on the him that stared back from the shattered violent mirror, at the disappointment that stared at him, at the momentary loss.

After this long, had he really not changed?
[break][break]
Did it even matter?
[break][break]
As hands wrapped around his neck, squeezed so tightly, the only thing he could think was that those hands were awfully small. Tiny even, hands that he couldn’t still, a life he couldn’t take. He had failed at killing another traitor because of his own feelings, feelings he couldn’t rid himself off, that he couldn’t cut from himself. He couldn’t be the perfect soldier.

So was there really any point in him still sticking around? Did they need him? He felt the fight drain out of him as the air began to empty from his lungs, as his body began to scream for oxygen, Kouji’s mind slowly began to accept these events.

He had a second chance, he had lived twenty years in a hell, and yet he was still the same person.
