Here it is, the end of the road. A man has to face the music and put his money where his mouth is. Standing across from him is Callan Young, one of Hoenn’s greatest trainers. Gabe loved the man’s music, even before he was an Elite 4. If only his brother had lived to see this man climb to the top.[break][break]
He’s made all the preparation he can. Past a certain point, you just have to accept how the cards fall. No plan survives contact with the enemy – and today, for just one day, they’re enemies. Neither one of them is the sort of person to put anything less than their all into a fight. Though their styles may differ, that and their desire to keep this land safe bind them.[break][break]
“You know, there’s a song I always liked to listen to before I hit the pitch.” Navy muses to Callan, pacing back and forth. He never used to pace like that. It’s a bad habit picked up from sharing a soul with a dragon. Sygna suits giveth, and sygna suits taketh.[break][break]
“It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n’ roll. You know the song, yeah? You remember that feeling, Young? Standing at the bottom of the hill, looking up?” He scans the room, hands in his pocket.[break][break]
All three of his Pokemon are out of their pokeballs, standing behind him, waiting their turn. Only one can go at a time. None of them are equipped with the items he’s seen Callan offer other trainers for their matches.[break][break]
Ironsides, his Skarmory, quietly eyes Callan from across the pitch. The Skarmory is perpetually too old for this shit, but he looks calm today. Behind the steel bird is a ghostly dragon, fading in and out of existence. Fafnir grins at Callan.[break][break]
Last, but not least, Roland stares at the field impassively. His chrome body is a testament to his determination. Missing an arm, he wields only one-half of the blade Iron Valiants are known for. One arm is more than enough.[break][break]
“Ready when you are.” He offers a sportsmanlike smile and a distant fist bump.

Callan seated himself in the somewhat repaired wreck of his Elite Four room.

The lights worked, the functions of the systems all worked, but the scar and damage of the meeting that had occurred during the Assembly was prevalent. On the other side of Navy, Callan seated himself amidst the stadium lights on a single cube, that had raised itself upwards to form a makeshift chair.

He stared sombrely at a single Pokeball, before his face turns up at the sound of Navy's voice and he smiles, "I'm always still looking up, Navy." Callan replies, "The mountain never ends, it is the climb that matters."

He stands up, as a round cylinder lifts from his side of the field to reveal three Ultra Balls. He clips them to his belt, releasing the first one.

“I know…and I wanna keep climbing with you.” He says, full of confidence. “Win or lose, I want us to be strong enough to defend Hoenn from Rocket and everything else.”[break][break]
Everything else, including the Dark Triad. They’re coming for Hoenn. Death comes for them all. It falls upon men like Callan to think up ingenious strategies. Let Navy, by the might of his arms, be the one to carry out that plan.[break][break]
Two of his Pokemon return to their balls. Only Ironsides is left on the field. Ironsides, first among Navy’s Pokemon. Ironsides was the first Pokemon the champ in the making ever caught. Ordinarily, he would roll his eyes at the command to go forward. Today, he makes no such complaints.[break][break]
He takes to the air, soaring amidst the gathering storm.[break][break]
“Knowing Young, he’s trained this Ninetails well. He can probably kick up a storm. Get in there, Ironsides. Hard and fast.” His wings are blades. His heart is steel. Swooping down upon the Ninetails, the old bird screeches bloody murder. Trusting in Callan’s judgement, Navy and Ironsides go all out.[break][break]
A bladed steel wing slashes across the Ninetails. Ordinarily, combat doctrine for such a creature would dictate hit and run tactics. Not so for this Pokemon Navy has trained. He keeps on the offensive, sticking close and screeching his defiance.[break][break]
In his wake, he scatters stealth rocks across Callan’s side of the field. They sprout from Ironsides and float upwards. Best to leave nothing to chance.[break][break]
“That’s right, Ironsides! Keep up the momentum!”

"Good." Callan murmurs, under his breath, a quiet smile forms like a ghost in the arc of his lips.

Snow begins to fall from the nearby area, strengthening Yukianesa's defenses. But further than that, a powerful AURORA VEIL releases, enshrouding the Ninetales in its effervescent light. Bladed rocks float from Navy's Skarmory, and Callan knew full well the plan of attack, it was an intelligent play. Two of his Pokemon would be chipped down, quartered by a single move, making switch ins particularly dangerous for the Elite Four.

To stay in as a Ninetales was likely madness for most opponents, but Callan was often a little mad. That, or he calculated the damage done perfectly in his mind.

The snow forms an initial buffer against the wing, before the aurora veil further cushions the blow of the wing. A four times effective attack was a death sentence for any Pokemon, normally, but with the additional protections afforded, Yukianesa takes the blow and is launched backwards, flipping in mid air and landing on its paws. She's clearly wounded, but still functional.

"Blizzard!" The snow forms into steel spikes, as the daggers travel forwards, attempting to pierce through the armor of Skarmory.

It hurts. Navy may not have his soul linked with Ironsides with his sygna suit, but he knows this hurts. They’ve been together a long time. Sounds that might register as nothing at all to another trainer paint a picture of his Skarmory’s inner world.[break][break]
“Ironsides. You gotta keep up the pressure.” Maybe he’s playing into the genius of the Elite 4’s hands with this gambit. He’s never been a chess player. Thinking a hundred moves ahead isn’t his style. One at most, two if he’s lucky…improvising, adapting. Carrying through with ironclad determination.[break][break]
There are many roads up this mountain, and those words form his path upwards. Amidst the blizzard and the hail, Ironsides launches himself forward. Again, his steel wings are blades. Navy repeats the mantra in his head that has carried him since Galar: the best shield is a sword.[break][break]
How very like this man, to take a creature meant for a defensive battle and urge him onto the offense. The steel wing endeavors to find purchase amidst the frozen hell. Slashing, Ironsides keeps his breathing under control. If the elite values levelheadedness in battle, he need look no further than Ole Ironsides.[break][break]
“Rest. You can keep up the pressure but take your time.” So the bird obeys. Landing on the ground, he roosts. For a brief moment, he is a creature of the ground. With his feet firmly planted, blood flows through his body.[break][break]
For a single moment, his heart feels warm in the blizzard.
