“Hmm…” There were many ways to educate. As fun as it would be to sucker punch Dylan, a gentler hand might be needed here. The rockerboy knows the score. Knows the stakes – or at least as well as anyone can before they see live fire. There’s only so much training can get you.[break][break]
Jugs has their world rocked by Litchi. Since the dawn of time, fighting Pokemon have bashed their fists against solid stone. Against all odds, against the rational logic of humans, it has worked. By their sheer might, they have turned rocks aside. They have split them with nothing but stubborn determination. Maybe that’s why, of every type, Navy relates to fighting more than any save Dragons.[break][break]
Jugs stumbles back, its sandstorm cutting into Litchi but doing nowhere near as much damage as it had just endured.[break][break]
“Think about it like this: sometimes, it’s just about keeping your head cool. Not giving into pressure. You know type match-ups, at least. That’s a start. Of course…sometimes that doesn’t count for anything out in the real world. You run into some well-trained Onix or Golem and he’ll rock your Machamp’s world if you’re not careful.”[break][break]
Regathering itself, Jugs tears up the earth. His stone edge is aimed to create a barrier between himself and Litchi while staying on the offensive.[break][break]
“If you want a break, I’ve got a wall here where other challengers left some advice. Maybe something they’ve said will help you out.”

Dylan's eyes went half-lidded. He feigned a cough, taking a drag of his nicotine pen. The scent of an apple peeked through, ribbons of mist trailing from his nose seconds later. A sleeping dragon, in the flesh.

The sound of fists ringing on stone took him back. Took Dylan back to playgrounds, concerts, bars back home. It took him back to someone thumping a juke box if there was a delay. His sentimentality drew him to ghosts, their faint traces of... every kind of physicality. He snapped to when Stone Edge connected, sending Litchi skittering back. It looked like it hurt, but like Litchi could tough it out until he came up with something.

He thought about it for a second. The sandstream dug into Litchi, and he glanced aside. Dylan just spaced out. "...Work up. Just... stay your hand and make those arms tougher." He murmured, followed by Litchi pausing. Her muscles swelled, and she just felt bigger, though her size remained the same. She just took on a bigger presence.

Dylan blinked, looking back to Navy. He was right, in that he had to think bigger than attacking. But, he was being offered help here? A break, and a chance to see how other people thought through this. He shook his head, looking back to Navy. The waves of sand tossed his hair to and fro. "I'm torn here. I really am. Learning about other perspectives on this would help moving forward. But... In a real battle, we're all gonna have to make calls by ourselves, for better or for worse. And isn't that what we've been training me for the whole time?"

The response to his question doesn’t come from Navy. Hattori taps Dylan on the shoulder. Somewhere along the way, the frog snuck up to him. He silently clung to his back. Those words earn the rockerboy a smile and a thumbs up from the one-eyed Greninja. Tiny though he may be, he’s fought in a plethora of conflicts in the past year. There’s approval in the gesture, and in his eyes.[break][break]
“Good job. Didn’t say I’d make it easy for you to get there. Remember, deception’s a part of battle, too. There’s honorable Rockets, but there’s plenty that’ll just as soon stab you in the back. If you wanna be a warrior, you can’t show it to anyone. Not willingly. Not unless you’re carrying someone.”[break][break]
Meanwhile, Litchi seems to be bulking up. Getting ready for what comes next. Jugs manipulates his own stone, sending a beautiful cropping of stone edges out towards the bear. She’ll have to keep up the momentum or be lost in the hurricane.[break][break]
“So then: what now?”

The reduced speed by way of Hammer Arm ensured that Stone Edge connected. Litchi was sent skittering back, and had maybe, one more in her. Dylan flinched, seeing the stones run closer than ever. He feigned a cough again, and again, mist rolled out of his nose in ribbons.

Dylan thought for a second. "...We're ready again. Use Hammer Arm again." He murmured, followed by Litchi rolling up, feet stomping. She looked tired, but she had to have one more in her, right? In either case, his frequent vaping was a little more obvious now. Dylan liked acting cold, but he was a nervous wreck on the inside, and had to sedate himself with nicotine. If Navy looked closely, he could see his eyes light up with anticipation.

Dylan blinked, looking back to Hattori. He then turned his head, acknowledging Navy. "Honor goes out the window when there's something at stake. I've been deceived enough times to know that." It's quite the story.

In the end, the type advantage wins out. Jugs stumbles back. He’s taken his share of beatings. Falling down, he welcomes the return offered by the gym leader. Dylan’s leading now. Navy, who by all rights should be mad, beams with pride. This is why he enjoys this job. This is why he wants to do this instead of going on an ego trip at Ever Grande.[break][break]
“Good. Good! Fuckin’-A.” He claps for the rocker. “You feel that? That feeling like you’re about to fall over? That’s good. Don’t ever lose that. That’s how you survive. A guy without fear on the battlefield’s a guy on the short track to the next life.” And if Dylan takes no other lesson from this than that, he’ll be content.[break][break]
“You two work good together. Hell, Napoleon and you do, too. Alright, one more, to decide this.” He throws out another pokeball. Inside is Yohei, a Hisuin Goodra. He waves at Dylan. If he has some malevolent purpose here, it is not immediately presented.[break][break]
“Honor’s got a place if you want it there. At the end of the day, the only judge you’ve gotta answer to is yourself. If you’ve got a stupid rule and you’re hellbent on following it, follow it. Just know that Rocket will happily use that against you.”

Navy's Gigalith going down was a surprise. Maybe he was learning something here after all. Next came Navy's Hisuian Goodra. This left the two at a standstill again, and Dylan's eyes narrowing. The nicotine had his head spinning, and he bit his tongue to center himself. He had an anxious, constant rumbling to him; Dylan in moments of stress was like a bee and a beekeeper all at once. Navy's clapping, his comment caught him off-guard.

Dylan blinked. "...It feels like my head's gonna explode. But... this is the most focused I've ever been." He said, his vision going fuzzy for a second. He blinked it away, and glanced at the ground. It looked like he'd seen a ghost. It was just like him to lose it seconds after he swore he was in control. Yohei waved to him, and Dylan felt it necessary to smile for a second, waving with an open hand. "You've raised them well. This one's kinda cute."

Dylan thought for a second, looking back to Navy. "--I'm kinda losin' the plot here. Who's left standing matters more than anything I've said. ...Were you like me, when you were my age?"

At face value, Dylan’s statement is absurd. They’re the same age, or close enough. On paper, their birthdays aren’t far apart. It’s a testament to this region. His soul is two decades older than it should be thanks to Galar, its heroes, and poisoned treasures. His body is four years older than it should be thanks to the Space/Time distortions caused by Arceus’s children.[break][break]
He’s nothing but a bit player in all this, and even he is scarred. Torn. Scars on the inside and the out. So, when Dylan asks the question, the sheriff knows at once what he means.[break][break]
“When I was sitting where you are now…didn’t even know what I was fighting for. I was happy to run. Happy to just let other people take care of business. Then, there was a meteor in the sky. My best friend was flying up there with the girl I crushed on in my twenties. All those heroes…and me on the ground. Couldn’t do it anymore. Couldn’t let other people decide my fate for me. Just…”[break][break]
With a whistle, Yohei gets to work. Nothing aggressive at first, simply setting the field. A rain dance causes the sprinklers to turn on, giving them dramatic rain.[break][break]
“…know this, man. If you see this through, you won’t recognize the person you are in a year. I sure as hell don’t. You’ll find out who you really are, or what you could be.”

They're the same age, sure. Physically. But they were leagues apart in maturity and temperament. Dylan delighted in being the boy sent to the principal's office for scary drawings as an adult man. He also got sad in a way he couldn't describe sometimes, like a kid would, on occasion. Navy's tenure on Hoenn and the wisdom he projected felt like a lifetime, a memoir someone would write in their old age, only at thirty.

Dylan had nothing but sympathy for that. For feeling left behind and abandoned. He saved his Phantump from that, but people can't be saved from it sometimes. "That's the most painful part, feeling like you're being left behind by your peers. I think... that's the fear that made me ask for your help to begin with. I couldn't admit it at the time."

He thought for a minute. By now, using Hammer Arm over and over made Litchi too sluggish to use anything that made speed a variable. So... he'd take a chance and bank on being slower and stronger. "Litchi. Set up a Vital Throw."

All the while, she approached Yohei slowly, arms positioned to counter, unless (and this is very likely) she gets dropped after fighting for so long. "I have a pretty good idea of what I wanna be."

“Oh yeah?” Navy asks with a raised eyebrow. Those words seemed to carry real conviction. That’s good. If that’s the road he wants to walk down, he has to see it through. Walk it with conviction, listen to your fear, cover your allies. It’s weird work, it sends mixed messages. That’s life. Dylan will figure it out. He seems like a smart guy.[break][break]
“Show me, then.” He asks, nodding at Yohei. Polite though the grandfatherly dragon was before the match began, he unleashes his full might. Powered up by the rain, he unleashes a water pulse. It hurts Litchi, damn near puts her down, but she’s a sturdy girl. There’s enough fuel left in the tank for her to sock Yohei. Sock him well and good. Damn near knock him into next week.[break][break]
It’ll take more than one hit, even a damn good hit, to knock out a steel dragon. Yohei remains standing as Litchi falls from the pulse. The kindly dragon sits and waits patiently on the next contender.

Dylan couldn't help but smile. "Yeah." He had all kinds of thoughts running rampant, and this was the most normal among them. He's scared of being alone, but feels like he has to filter people.

Litchi fell, prompting him to return her to a pokeball, to prevent further injury. Dylan then threw out his Lycanroc. A howl rung out, the wolf hunching over, with eyes glowing. "Ōkami! I know, it looks tough. But we're almost there. Use Crunch!"

This was easily the loudest, most animated he'd ever been. ōkami proceeded to charge up on all fours, eyes gleaming. If Yohei didn't dodge, it'd be pounced on and bitten. "And I'm gonna fight, for who I wanna be."

Steel is slow. There’s no way around that. Steel-types lumber about the battlefield. Navy’s found he loves steel types. He first tasted freedom on a Skarmory’s back. In adulthood, he’s sure people see him more as a dragon trainer, or a fighting trainer, but steel types hold a special place in his heart. Yohei combines these two loves, and Navy knows their drawbacks well.[break][break]
Yohei was never going to jump out of Okami’s way. Shrieking, the old dragon endures the bite. He flinched before he could retort.[break][break]
“Yohei,” Navy says in a calm, commanding voice, “Yohei!” The second pulls the dragon from his reverie. Looking to Navy, even as the rock wolf hangs from his arm, he waits for his orders.[break][break]
“Water Pulse.”[break][break]
Nodding, the dragon starts to build power. His flinch ensures it’s a slow thing, it takes time. Time enough for Okami to back off, if he so chooses. To stay aggressive or to mitigate a coming blow, there’s merit in both paths. It’s simply a matter of which one Dylan and his partner will take.

Dylan's attachment to the ghost type is sentimental. He's a million miles from home, and he collects dead plants, dolls, and people who passed. Everything that's left behind is his. He was on no level a practical thinker. He let his pokemon go free-range, and did as he pleased.

Pretty much everything outside of that purview is his friends rubbing off on him. Even that Lycanroc was Navy's pup. "Ōkami! Use Double Team!" The wolf backed off, using her hind legs to spring off Yohei, before starting evasive maneuvers. In either case, that Water Pulse connected. Lycanroc held on, but she had one more left in her.

Dylan's eyes narrowed. He seemed to focus a little more, and look more animated. If he had ōkami keep attacking, consequences be damned, he didn't learn the lesson Navy was trying to teach him. There has to be something outside of attacking, and ōkami had a speed advantage anyways. "I get what you're trying to teach me here. There has to be more to fighting than just going in swinging. Even if I fail here, you've given me a lot to think about."

This kid’s a quick learner. Navy wishes someone had thrown him to the sharks when he was the age Dylan pretends to be, forcing him to learn that lesson. Yohei’s water pulse finds no purchase. Slumping, the dragon lumbers around. There’s danger in the steel dragon’s eyes. Goodra are friendly, fun-loving dragons – yet still, they are dragons. Rouse a dragon’s anger and it becomes everyone’s problem.[break][break]
Suddenly, Navy rooting for Dylan feels practical. Either Okami takes out Yohei or Navy has to call in Shuwen. It feels like it would spoil the fun.[break][break]
“Damn right. Let your opponent tucker themselves out. Don’t let ‘em stay fresh. Find an opening. Exploit it. That’s how you survive on a battlefield. Just being a good battler doesn’t cut it. Gotta outthink your opponents.”[break][break]
Folding his arms, he waits to see what happens next. Can the mighty wolf score a hit while the dragon’s thrown off balance, or will they have a full blown crisis on their hands?

Navy would've been Dylan's age... six years ago. And even then... Dylan threw himself at all this about... a year ago. The Water Pulse grazed Okami at the very least, leading Dylan to stare more intensely.

He couldn't help but be calm here. The rigid, unfeeling machines weren't in sight. "Ōkami! Now's your chance. Use Crunch again." The wolf closed in, zig-zagging across the field. With this small window, Dylan clenched his fists until his knuckles ran white. If he folded here, would actual war kill him?

Dylan's eyes narrowed. He couldn't help but concede that he just did not think practically until very recently. That this lesson was necessary. "And to tell you the truth, I was never good at battling either. This is my first time issuing commands. I'm "free range" at all times with them. You saw that side of me. Making Espeon had me in tears."
