Greyson laughs, a memory of his battle with Callan where he'd done much the same thing, surfacing in his mind. With a gentle flick of his wrist he recalls the electric-type, replacing it with a small minun.

The ILLUSION lasts only a moment, just long enough for the dark glint in her eyes to reflect her proposed TORMENT, before it shatters to reveal a Zoroark. She immediately sets upon the Palafin, claws gleaming beneath the newfound sunlight, and a wide, excited fox-smile on her lips.

Across the field, TOXIC SPIKES embed themselves in the grubs of her DEFENSE ORDER, though some of them manage to slip past and stick into her chitin. POISON slowly seeps into her system, even as her pincers thrash in agitation.

“Hattori.” Navy says as the Greninja readies himself. Were he to say nothing, the diminutive Greninja would fight to the bitter end for him. That is simply his shinobi’s nature.[break][break]
“That’s enough.” Pulling out Hattori’s pokeball, he presses a button to recall Hattori. He has earned his rest.[break][break]
But not before the Greninja, in small and stark defiance, aids his Lord one last time. Throwing down another smokescreen, he leaves the rest in Toshinori’s capable hands.[break][break]
By the time the smoke bomb is thrown, Toshinori is rushing to meet the new challenger. His right hand balls into a fist. He means to jab the wily fox with a jet punch. Hattori’s smokescreen provides ample cover through which to retreat.[break][break]
“C’mon, Leviathan. You’re up.” He throws out his Kingdra. Howling, he announces himself, surfing upon a wave of air.[break][break]
The audience are all asking themselves the same thing: fairy king or fighting master, who will win?

Holding out a hand, Greyson returns the Vespiquen to her ball. He looks beyond the veil of smoke and to the water- and dragon-type Pokémon, then to Navy himself.

"What do you say we just settle with between these two here?" A nudge of his head indicates the Zoroark, and Palafin. The two, as if having rehearsed this moment, collide -- shadow claw and jet punch spending sparks, and waves of air pressure, through the battlefield.

Scuffed, but far from beaten, the Zoroark responds with a palm-sized blast of dark energy, a compressed form of her night daze point-blank. The crowd gasps in excitement.

“You know what?” Navy grins like a kid who’s been put up to a dash of misadventure. “Sounds like a damn fine idea. Leviathan. Sorry you gotta get recalled so soon.”[break][break]
Leviathan’s retreat from the field is far less impressive than Toshinori’s clash with the dark fox. Faced with a point blank night daze, Toshinori kicks his fin against the ground. He is launched high into the air, a dazzling display of acrobatics.[break][break]
“Toshi! Think fast.” Holding out his tera crystal, it begins to swirl. Power gathers in the orb. It rumbles and vibrates in his hands. It holds within itself countless possibilities. The ball is a reflection of all that a Pokemon could be.[break][break]
Toshinori is already great. The orb merely makes him greater. He dons a water crown, crystals collecting like armor along his body. Howling in joy, he descends upon Zoroark amidst a sudden tidal wave. The waves crash against the ground, bringing the battle back to his foe.

His instincts were correct — Navy was a man of action. He knew that he'd take the fight, and he wasn't disappointed. At least, not until he pulls out a jagged crystal.

"Tera?" His lips part into a grin, a huff of air that's mixed with a chuckle following. "You son of a—" Right, the crowd and his position. Can't let the battle mania get to him.
[break][break]
"Alright, you got it. No holding back." Not that Navy himself was, if judging by the wave that was headed his way. Fair game though.
[break][break]
"Scarlett," with the dolphin taking a moment to power-up, that left the Zoroark free to assess the situation. Greyson's voice pulls, but the fox only turns her head just enough to lend him her ear, eyes never leaving her opponent.

He had no tera. No mega evolution. No Z-move. Yet, he felt something in his chest. A call to action. One they both shared.
[break][break]
"Yeah, no pep talk needed, huh? Just action." Shadows leak like smoke from the claws at her side, her muzzle twitching in barely restrained excitement.

"GO!"
[break][break]
Scarlett explodes forward and directly towards the encroaching wave. Her SHADOW CLAW meets it, tearing chunks to fuel her way forward, but even that isn't enough. Water wraps around her, threatening to envelope and consume her. Her footing becomes unsteady, chest lifting like a rollercoaster's drop. Her snarl becomes vocal, shadow-tipped claws tinged violet as her strikes also carry the weight of her PSYCHIC will.

A pathway forms, her chest rising and falling from the effort. She takes advantage, leaping for her opponent, the very weight of her strike warping the air around her claws as she reaches for the water-type hungry for more.

“Ha, ha!” The Palafin grins. Within his crown, he sees a world ruled by water – a world of freedom for creatures of the sea. It is a vexing fantasy, pushing him to the apex of a proverbial wave. He smiles, meeting Scarlett head-on. One will be the victor, one the loser. All he knows is that, in this moment, this contest, he and his trainer both feel alive.[break][break]
There is no sygna suit that informs the feeling. It is a simply understanding between trainer and Pokemon of one another’s feelings. In battle, there is liberation. Written history and its threaded narratives come later. For now, there is only the crashing of waves and a crowd’s thunderous applause.[break][break]
Skipping about the water, his acrobatics build momentum. Up and up his speed swings, a gathering storm dampened only by psychic pressure. The claw comes, and with it come chunks from his flesh. Pain is expected, there can be no growth or true victory without pain.[break][break]
“Come on, Toshi.” His trainer cries, fist clenched. The human lives vicariously through the fight, wishing he were the man in the arena. It behooves him, as Navy’s Pokemon, to put on a good show.[break][break]
Claw meets fist in a resounding shockwave, pushing back the water all around them. Toshinori’s jet punch, the pride of any Palafin, surges with aquatic power.

Both fueled by their own momentums — Zoroark her psychic, Palafin his acrobatics — both Pokémon collide once more. Silence consumes the field, and the crowd stills. A visible shockwave pulses out in a sphere around the two as their impacts send waves rolling outwards.

At first glance, the action has stilled — both combatants locked into a struggle of force, and will. Then, with a much quieter explosion of force, Scarlett rockets backwards, her small, lithe form skipping across the dying remnants of the tsunami like a rock in the pond.

[break]

Soaked to the bone, she forces herself to her feet, long mane of blood red clinging to her back and in disarray. A low hiss rumbles in her throat, stuttering like a fox's laugh, and her claws close in, and out, reflexively.

[break]

Greyson found himself in a predicament.
[break]
[break]

When the Zoroark got into a mood like this, she was difficult to reason with, or give commands, and while he trusted her instincts normally, this could very well get ugly.

[break]

On the other hand, if he denied the dark-type her fight, she would be.. upset with him. Very upset.
[break]
[break]

Inwardly, he suppresses a groan. One last go. One final attempt. Then, he'd pull the plug. Winning was important — but not so important he'd risk an injury to either side.

[break]

His eyes lift to find the man's across from him. He nods, small, nearly imperceptible. An agreement. A promise.
[break]
[break]

Last one.
[break]
[break]

"Keep it simple," he commands. "Nothing flashy."
[break]
[break]

In response, Zoroark assembles a night daze between her claws. With another flex of will, she condenses the orb, compacting it further. The surface takes on a smooth, rounded appearance, its inner-working a swirl of purple and blacks. In a rush, Scarlett shoots off, her breathe ragged but predatorial smile gleaming.

There would be nothing left after this. Of this match, and most importantly, of that Palafin.

The two warriors’ eyes lock. That’s how it always goes in the movies, that’s how this is supposed to start. It seems that today, that’s how things end. Navy returns the nod, but he can’t help but grinning like a younger man. Toshinori readies himself for the inevitable.[break][break]
“And you know what we say to that, don’t we, Toshi?! We always gotta be flashy.” The Palafin rides upon a wave of water, pumping his fist in the air. A sound, half a cry of the creature’s own name, half a laugh, resounds from his maw.[break][break]
“One last hit for the road. C’mon. Show ‘em your heart.”[break][break]

His heart is right there on his chest, emblazoned in maroon. His heart beats for the thrum of a fight. Though he may be a creature of the water, empowered by water, he understands his trainer’s fighting spirit.[break][break]
“If I were fighting for myself…wouldn’t mind calling it here. We’ve had a damn good fight. Sure you can agree.”[break][break]
It all comes down to this: the rush, one final attack. A grand finale. That is the story of Navy’s life. It is these moment, the time between the seconds, where he and his Pokemon feel the most alive. Toshinori rushes forward, right into the maelstrom of energy. Whatever comes there, he takes it head-on…[break][break]
“But this ain’t about me! It’s about everybody watching! It’s about that guy I used to be, and about the little brother I made a promise to! One of the Navidson boys is gonna be a champ!”[break][break]
…and comes out the other side bloodied, smiling, howling in pain and laughter. It was a good strike, a strike worthy of an Elite’s Pokemon. He hears a ringing sound in his ears, sees the light fading as darkness threatens to take him, feels the energy from the crowd. Yet he keeps swimming, rises, his fist raised.[break][break]
“GIVE. HIM. HEEEEEELL!”[break][break]
One last hit, and it contains everything he and his bullheaded trainer are.[break][break]
“Aaaaaaaaaaagh!” Fighting spirit gathers around his fists, a desire to win, no matter what, to see this through. He has taken his final hit, and now Scarlett must take hers.[break][break]
This drain punch, and what comes after, will decide everything.

Their impact releases yet another, more powerful sphere of air around them. Water, still raining in gentle rhythms around them, stills as it comes into contact with the expanding sphere. It expands, and expands, until it nearly reaches the crowd before it dissipates, the water it carries soaking everyone at its edges.

In the center of it all, Scarlett struggles to stand. Greyson looks at the dark-type, then lets his gaze linger on the crowd. There was no sound -- not a single peep. Each person waiting with baited breathe for the result of such an impact.

Emotions swirl within' his chest. Regret. Excitement. Fear. Resignation. With a soft smile he recalls the Zoroark, encapsulating her in crimson light.

"Congratulations. It's your win."

A thunderous roar consumes everything.
