Riding in the sky, it sounded more majestical than it really was; but it was just as much a disgusting sight. It brought back memories, riding on the back of an airborne pokemon. The most tactical place to be in a battle, Kouji understood that well; but…

Everything was distant, the people who walked below were simple ants to be crushed, it made the act of killing an act far more detached than it ever ought to be. He had gotten used to it in Galar, but it had been pokemon then.
[break][break]
He couldn’t do the same for people, whenever he could, so as to remain human. He sought to stare them in the eyes, understand them, and then take their life. Even an irredeemable deed should have been done as a human.
[break][break]
Perhaps it was that rather than the torture that had robbed the light from his eyes.
[break][break]
But he didn’t stop, he swooped down on a trainer riding on a Pidgeot, his Roaring Moon crunched down on the bird’s wings with a dragon lock before tearing it off, leaving both to fall into the sea.

”Today’s gonna be a long day.”

He didn’t have the slightest idea of just how long.

"Make sure they're safe, Moku!"[break][break]

A familiar voice calls out, delegating tasks in the heat of battle. A flash of light, and a Clodsire emerges to shield the trainer from the fall and carry them ashore. [break][break]

There's nothing she can do to spare the Pidgeot, but that's the price of war. She pushes it from her mind. Even for her age, she's faced this too many times to count. She refuses to be fazed by it.[break][break]

Beneath her, a malevolent gaze sets upon the past. The disembodied spirit of a primordial sea flies as if swimming, young girl riding atop her head. Barely suppressed malice stirs within the ghost at the sight of another paradox, and she moves in quickly, mouthing a curse on her lips.[break][break]

"Leaving them to die! What's wrong with you!?"[break][break]

She girl shouts at the top of her lungs, and as she does, her Flutter Mane fires a condensed ball of shadows filled with her very resentment, meant to strike the dragon out of the skies.[break][break]

It didn’t take a second to realise there was someone else there, but that didn’t make it simple to deal with. The coalescing energy, and the lost mark; it took a strong kick to Roaring Moon’s side to make the dragon turn, even if it wanted to bite his throat out for the arrogance of striking it.

Just in time.

The dragon had his wing clipped by the blast of energy, almost like a poison to dragons, Roaring Moon began to tilt to one side before he rebalanced himself, putting more force into that wing’s flap to keep himself balanced.
[break][break]
He looked at the interloper, a tone tinged in assuredness, he spoke. ”Yeah I was going to let him fa-.” Yet it faded as quickly as he began to see the features of the girl he was speaking to. His eyes widened before he tried to recollect himself, a deep breath to still his emotions.

”Tsubaki.” He had spent too long in that otherworld to be swayed by this person, even if he wished anyone but her was there. He’d take a second fight against MATIAS SILPH before he had to fight her.

”Turn around, I don’t want to hurt you.”
[break][break]
Even if his voice was steady, even if he tried to keep it even, you could hear the plea underneath the bravado.

Doubt races through her mind. Last she saw him was in another lifetime. Child soldiers get killed all the time. Chances are the person she's thinking of is dead. That doubt lingers, building on itself. There's no way. [break][break]

And yet... and yet, the thought that he's here, right in front of her, is an inescapable fact. [break][break]

"... Kouji Onii-chan?"[break][break]

She can't second guess it after putting that name in her mouth. [break][break]

She swallows the dread that holds her back. Her eyes narrow. [break][break]

"What're you doing here?"[break][break]

Her glare is filled with resentment. [break][break]

For all that she's fought, all that she's endured, to think she'd meet him here, in Hoenn of all places. She left Kanto for a reason. All the heartbreak, all the pain. All the scars. They're bleeding now, old wounds opening up again one after the other. It's like she never left, suddenly. The past that's come to haunt her is alive and well again.[break][break]

... And he tells her to turn back. [break][break]

She can't believe him, this man and his stupid audacity. [break][break]

He's always been a gutless coward, from the moment she met him. [break][break]

"I'm done running away! So what're you gonna do about it!?"[break][break]

The ghost beneath her waves her mane and summons a jet of Mystical Fire with a hex. It burns hotter than hell. Hotter, even, than Tsubaki's resentment.[break][break]

What was he going to do about it?

It might’ve been a lifetime away, but it was what had made him the person he was, everybit as important as the decades of torture, it was there that he decided what he was going to do with himself. Everybit as pivotal as his fight with Navidson, it put a direction to the road he was walking on.

To deny that would be trampling on everything he was. He didn’t move for a second, Kouji was stuck in place, his face contorted through various expressions. In times when it mattered, he really did regress to that gutless coward. Doubt waged a fierce battle within his mind, making the seconds stretch into countless hours. He was supposed to fight, Tsubaki wouldn’t turn around, she had decided to go past him.

Could he stop her?

It wasn’t a simple question to ask himself. But he took in a deep breath, he had made choices before, he had failed because his heart stirred before. He promised not to kill his heart to move like a machine, so he wouldn’t. This was for the sake of the world he wanted to create, even if it would cause pain to others.

”I’ll stop you.”
[break][break]
Roaring Moon hadn’t moved, the Mystical fire had struck it head on, an explosive force that spread flames across it but draconic energies raged throughout it, a large wingflap to disperse those flames.

”Don’t cry if you end up swimming back.” He said as his Roaring Moon was spurred onwards, spinning in the air; making tight maneuvers to make it hard to read; Acrobatics that was aimed at falling atop the Flutter Mane.

All Kouji could do in this fight was hang on tight.

Nothing will get in her way. She'll carve her own path in this world, to hell with everything else. All the punishment and pain in the world won't dissuade her, and neither will he. She'll do whatever she wants. And in this moment, up against the might of a monstrous dragon, she feels that burden more than anything else.[break][break]

"I won't cry if you won't!"[break][break]

She grins, taunting him, though she knows if he's made it this long in Rocket there's probably no heart left in this once-sensitive boy. [break][break]

Her Flutter Mage maneuvers unnaturally in the air, taking the brunt of Kouji's Roaring Moon herself, unable to contest its physical might. Only with her speed is she able to protect Tsubaki from most of its ferocity, letting fangs and claws scrape away ancient scales, though there isn't flesh to carve away.[break][break]

"Higa!" She screams her name as the pokemon swirls in midair to evade more damage, feeling the G-forces in her gut. Finally, she's got a chance to utter a command without biting off her tongue. "Burn away the darkness in his heart!"[break][break]

With the dragon so close, now's their chance. [break][break]

The paradox from a primordial sea shimmers with the ethereal light of the moon, a powerful light that strikes the spirit and reveals the secrets of the heart, stripping away all malice. Those made of it would have nothing left.[break][break]

A light which purified hearts.
[break][break]
Roaring Moon which was born of a terrible future, full of terrible intentions, born of dark thoughts. It had never stood a chance when struck with it square on the chest, it was a blast that propelled it backwards, and Kouji clean off his back as he retracted the pokemon back into his pokeball, such an impact would just be unnecessary pain that wasn’t worthwhile.

The pokemon that took its place might as well have been its twin, Salamence flapped his wings loudly in the air underneath Kouji, catching his trainer. He released a roar, a wave of intimidation passed through the air, already ready to see bloodshed, but it paused for a moment, its fighting spirit wasn’t being mirrored by his trainer.

”Haaa.”
[break][break]
A long sigh, Kouji knew that he couldn’t play around, he knew that his opponent wasn’t playing around either. He had decided to fight, so he needed to. There really was only one path to this wasn’t there, he wouldn’t squander this second life after that dream he had lived in.

”I’m really glad you’re alive.”
[break][break]
But that didn’t soften his claws, as the Dragon breathed out a hot stream of flames, white at the base.

”So make sure you don’t die.”

Even so... his words fill her with disgust, and she can't help but scream back at him.[break][break]

"'Don't die'? What kinda Rocket ARE you!?"[break][break]

Higa beneath her mutters hexes quickly under her breath, speaking words long dead in a language long forgotten, of primordial fates and ancient prophecies. Her eyes shimmer in the light of the wall of fire, only for that fire itself to congeal into unnatural shapes and take on the appearance of Kouji's malice, a Roaring Moon. [break][break]

"Don't treat me like we're allies! I've left Rocket for good! You better aim to kill, otherwise you don't stand a chance!"[break][break]

Before it can graze Tsubaki, the now-mystical fire rounds on the Salamence and its rider, letting out a full-throated roar of its own to accompany Tsubaki's. [break][break]

Kouji didn’t know just how to take this one, that outburst, but then again…

”Yeah, you’re right. We’re enemies, you’re a traitor, I should kill ya.” But then again, what was the difference between the two of them. ”But you always planned to leave, and I always planned to join.” Did that really make that much of a difference in the end?

What was he even tryna say in the end? As Salamence found the Mystical Fire heading towards him, the dragon doing quick maneuvers as the flames found his tail, to lick their way up. This level of inconsistency wasn’t going to work for him now, was it? He’d made decisions along the way, and even within this fight.

It was just a matter of getting his whole self behind that movement.
[break][break]
”Argh, this is annoying. Just shut up for a moment!” Even he couldn’t say whether it was to the dragon underneath him, the girl in front of him, or to himself. ”You don’t think I don’t know this is supposed to be a fight to the death, but before I have to kill you, just let me be happy for a couple of minutes.”
[break][break]
”Well, I guess there’s no room for that either is there.” It was a bitter voice as the shine in his golden eyes was wiped away. ”Let’s get serious, sorry buddy.” He said as he took out his knife, the mega stone within began to glow brightly allowing the dragon to transform.

A mega evolution, showing just how serious it was, and so Salamence immediately out of went for Double Edge, transformed into a flying type move by its new ability. This wasn't the time for a joyful reunion, that kind of time would never come, Kouji was a tool of Rocket, he just had to accept that.

Someone like this isn't meant to treat her with anything but scorn. A man who's given his everything to Rocket but somehow kept his heart disgusts her. The contradiction pisses her off. Even though she's left that life behind her, she's felt the rot set in, forgotten parts of herself.[break][break]

He can't keep going like he is and remain human. But even if he is, for now, he just has to act like he's not. It'll make this whole thing so much easier.[break][break]

"There we go! That's the Kouji I remember!"[break][break]

Tsubaki shouts in celebration as the dragon rushes forth, sheer malice behind him. Even facing down the jaws of death is exhilarating in its own way. It's like being in Kanto again, all her worst impulses leading her to do things no sane person would do.[break][break]

Higa ducks out of the way, one of her tendrils sliced away by the rush of air. She stares emotionless at the dragon, blood-red eyes alone filled with sheer hatred for this beast that still has the wings she was deprived of so long ago. [break][break]

Once, she soared free. But no longer.[break][break]

"Higa, now!"[break][break]

Tsubaki points, and another blast of fae energy congeals at the tip of the Flutter Mane's remaining tendrils. Before they can turn around or maneuver, she'll strike their flank.[break][break]

Kouji grimaced.

It was a small show of emotion before he wiped it clear. ”Remember? This ain’t nothing.” He said as he tried to get Salamence to turn once more, ready but the coalescing light told him that it would be dangerous to leave themselves unprotected.

”Protect.” An even cool tone as the shining barrier took on the blazing attack, malice wouldn’t be burned away so easily this time around as it shimmered around him, but Salamence continued to charge, as if using a shield as a weapon itself. It pushed air and moonlight aside both as he moved towards Higa, but Kouji could feel the fairy type moves attempt to burn away at him, and his dragon. It wasn't quite heat, but something else. He gritted his teeth, and closed his eyes before he looked down coolly, words that were supposed to realign himself.

”You’re gonna sink.”
[break][break]
Kouji loved battling, but even letting joy peak out wouldn’t be something to look at with favour right now, every time a spark pushed up, he snuffed it out once more. Things were different to Kanto, he was a full fledged member, he wasn’t chasing the coattails of his family any longer, and he wasn’t in that home.

He was right here, in the skies, battling an old comrade.
[break][break]
There was neither joy nor sadness to be found in that.

Fuck! Why didn't he just back down, pull back at the last second like he used to!? [break][break]

Tsubaki's bluff is called, and she's forced to reel back and maintain some distance. She gets close enough for the dragon to reach out and grab them, and the battle's done prematurely. [break][break]

"... No, there's nowhere further to fall!" [break][break]

This primordial ghost is proof of that. [break][break]

Lingering resentment of a past life, in a world far away. Whether the Ultra Deep Sea or Kanto's underground, she and this paradox are one in the same. Ghosts of what they once were, still lingering on cause there's something they can't let go. [break][break]

Kouji narrowed his eyes as he rode on the back of his Salamence as it rode forward, not willing to give the other duo any space whatsoever, keeping tight and close. He said as the dragon breathed out a stream of flames to clash against the gathering light. ”Why’d you leave then? Gonna pretend you ain’t hit rock buttom? Y’know there’s no such thing as redemption for people like us.”

It didn’t matter they were children. Kouji didn’t believe in that concept, your sins always remained with you. ”It will sit with you forever. So, sink further, into the fucking seas.”

It was even, it annoyed him just how detached he was able to become. It was strange, but it was like watching another person acting as him. The dragon charged forward even further with the flames coming out of his maws, even as the light was becoming stronger, tearing away at him.

It was strange, the light was no comfort for a man like him now. It just burned away, tearing at one’s skin, to sneak its way into his musculature and then finally pierce his heart. It was deadly, and so he charged into it.

Higa follows behind the blast, clearing the way at her Master's discretion.[break][break]

Tsubaki stands, prepared for what's to come. She faces it head-on.[break][break]

No matter if her body's burnt, no matter if she doesn't make it out of this... she'll never run away again.[break][break]

"Some things can never be forgiven! People like us, we don't deserve to exist! That's why..." [break][break]

She jumps, the moment the last of the flames clear. [break][break]

The intensity of their light blinds the dragon to their approach for a single moment, its superior rage its only weakpoint.[break][break]

"I'll stop you, and every other Rocket! So we're the last!"[break][break]

She punches him square in the jaw, tries to wrestle him straight off the dragon's back. [break][break]

Only Rockets hide behind their pokemon, using them as tools. But she's not a Rocket anymore.[break][break]

It was a simple set of words, but he hated what they represented, it was like a weed settling its roots into his soul, once more. He hated it, he had lived so long thinking that was true, but if that were the case…Why was he ever here?

He had never been anything but Rocket.

So, when the flames parted to see a rocketing fist towards his face, strike flatly against his face and threaten to knock him from his dragon, Kouji felt the blood run down the side of his mouth. That red fluid that was supposed to signify bonds that didn’t exist, not with a singular person in this world.

He pushed back as she tried to wrestle him from the back of Salamence. ”As if I’ll just roll over and let it end. If I had to go through all of this crap, I’ll make sure everyone else does.” It was spat with venom that dripped through with every word until it was a flood.

”If we don’t deserve to exist, then they deserve to have the worst life.” It was something that shouldn’t have come out, but as he wrestled back against Tsubaki, he gritted his teeth and then threw his head forward in a headbutt.
