The cave’s sealed up tight. Pokemon are throwing every conceivable kind of artillery fire – both at one another and at the door. Amid all this, while the thinkers of the league are busy getting the door open, Navy puts himself to use. In another life, he had founded a survey corps. He rode a magnificent steed bringing news and greenery across a wasteland. Some of those skills can be put to use here.[break][break]
What begins in hope ends in a tumble. Navy feels the ground beneath his feet cracking. A hasty jump leads to him narrowly escaping a fall down into the caves. The right thing to do’s call it in. They can all dog pile underground, look for a way into the treasure vaults.[break][break]
There has to be something more to this than treasure. That can’t be the only thing they’re doing this for.[break][break]
“Well…time to jump on my own terms.” And so he does.[break][break]
Luckily, it’s not a long fall. It’s softened by his Goodra, who jumped down before he did. Now they’re in it.[break][break]
And, judging by the light, they’re not alone. Is that…[break][break]
Of course it’s her.[break][break]
“Eris.” His voice is exasperated even as the smile crosses his lips. “You know there’s a war going on up there, right?”

[attr="class","inner-finally"]Illumina markings and a shoddy torchlight are all that she has for working through this puzzle, her fingers tracing the walls as she tries to figure out just what seems to be inscribed on the walls. But sound means movement, something that causes the light to waver as Reiner shifts to look.[break][break]

How unfortunate it is that Michael Navidson is greeted by the sight of bared teeth and brewing malice, the Luxray and Joltik taking a good moment of glaring at him before finally relaxing. As for Eris, she seems to relax when they do, letting out a shaky breath as she continues to direct her fullest attention to the puzzle.[break][break]

She nods to his question. Of course she knows, she didn't exactly have time to hide the reddish-blue patches on her arms. Still, that didn't stop her from getting involved in things way over her head. After all, just sitting by and praying for things to resolve rarely tended to work in her favour.

Pulling out a large flashlight, he turns it on and surveys the puzzle behind her. Hearing Reiner’s growls did more to put him at ease than anything. He’s only looking out for her. No offense taken, and he’s just doing his job. That puzzle, though…[break][break]
The lengths these ancient civilizations went to, if these weren’t made recently in interdream mist, to ward off future generations baffles him. Blinking, he tries to make heads or tails of the situation. He recognizes what they’re dealing with at once.[break][break]
“Oh you’ve gotta be kidding me. This is something out of this game Kyle and Gabe used to play together.” In another world, the puzzle is called a tower of Hanoi. In this where and when, it’s called a Burned Tower.[break][break]
“The guys who made this serious?” Running a hand along his brow, he sighs in frustration.

Whether this is the work of ancient civilisations or alternate dimensions, she doesn't quite know but she won't let that stop her from progressing. Her Joltik clacks his mandibles in her ears, her hand slowly pulled away as she allows herself to take in the new bits of information shined upon.[break][break]

She begins to pace about, drawing lines in the air between spots and humming to herself. And eventually she stops, a hand reaching out towards a rather worn down tile and pressing it in.[break][break]

Reiner's ears perk up. Something rumbles ominously up ahead but once it dies down, it's clear that nothing is going to jump at them. Looking towards Navy, Eris' eyes are bright and full of wonder, her head nudged towards the depths as she begins to take the first few steps.

He says a quiet prayer to Arceus that she’s here. Having seen Kyle and Gabe do this puzzle and its many variants again and again, he trusts his own mind. Just a few simple maneuvers and they’d be done. Eris saves him the trouble, and she seems to have fun while she’s at it. Even with a battle going on above their heads, even with the real possibility they might meet their end, he finds he’s having fun with her.[break][break]
The rumbling signals that they’re done with the puzzle. Turning towards the darkness leading downwards, he turns his flashlight. Lining the wall are glyphs. Each step along the stairway consists of four square steps. A quick observation rouses the old detective’s intuition: they correspond with certain symbols on the square steps along their path down.[break][break]
Moving after her, he takes the second step. It’s a jump onto the corresponding tile. Nothing bad happens. Another jump onto the next glyph corresponding to a step, and still he remains unmolested.[break][break]
“Heh. This is fun. Try and jump to the beat.” Like the protagonist of a certain rhythm game, he starts taking steps to the beat of a song playing only in his mind.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]For all the dangerous and potentially deadly traps that lie ahead of them, Eris really doesn't seem all that afraid as she continues to head down. Maybe a little scared with all the darkness that lies ahead but with Navy shining a bright light, she'll probably have a few moments to react to anything that shows up.[break][break]

Like him, she takes a cautious step onto her first one. Then comes a more daring and quicker step onto the next, then finally a hop onto the third. Despite Reiner's exasperated sighs, a quiet giggle echoes through the corridor, the excitement sweeping her up in its arms as she carefully leaps onto the next one. Just how far down does this path go? What do all these symbols mean? Who created all these contraptions? Perhaps, they'll get some kind of answer much further down.

“Pretty crazy, huh?” Navy asks as he jumps down, step by step. The path does not stay straight. It spirals, demanding that they angle their jumps to land on the correct tile. By now, he’s recognized the pattern to the glyphs. Still following the code on the wall, he jumps down.[break][break]
“Feels like we’re just down here playing a game. It’d be funny if this was just some playground for their kids.” If there’s one aspect of archaeology he finds interesting, going by Howard’s lectures, it’s the way people read their discoveries wrong. Men have a bad habit of seeing what the want to see, finding breakthroughs where there are none.[break][break]
Breakthrough or no, a curious smell fills his nostrils. Foes seem to fade in from the interdream mist. Not a sole Iron Valiant, but two of them. Two, while Navy has no Pokemon out. His Goodra was much too lumbersome for this task.[break][break]
“Well well…looks like we’re pincered. Trapped. One false step, force ‘em on the wrong tiles or jump there ourselves, we get done in. It’s a hard situation.” Somewhere along the way, he starts quoting a song. Unslinging a pokeball, he tosses out Roland. One Iron Valiant’s a poor counter for two, but Roland’s better trained.[break][break]
“We’ll need that mind of yours to get out of here, troublemaker.” He smiles at Eris, despite everything.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]One hell of a playground Navy's got in mind, but that's talking from the logical viewpoint of current Hoenn. And well, she doesn't even know what stepping on a wrong tile entails. What she does know is that pink mist begins to curl at her feet and that she really should be feeling a little more worried than she currently is.[break][break]

Perhaps, they should start by addressing the whole issue of the Iron Valiants taking a wrong step. The scraping of metal against bumpy rock walls gets her tensing up, a sharp whistle echoing through the corridor as two separate waterfalls of flowers bloom and pour from the ceiling. One wave hinders the Iron Valiant coming from above, whilst the other blasts the bottom one off the steps and continues to sweep them further down the path.[break][break]

"Go! Go!" She calls, taking care of every step she takes as she closely follows the tail of petals. Surely a disgruntled paradox pokemon would be waiting for them at the end of the path, but getting off that stairwell probably beats remaining on it when it collapses or the trap gets sprung.

It is not Navy, but his iron knight who responds to her command. Holding his blade ready, he skips down the steps with fae-like grace. His steps flow into one another. Each step sets him up for the next, one leg readying for the landing and putting enough pressure to send him skipping on. Thanks to his observations from the pokeball, he too knows the pattern. Navy’s not far behind him.[break][break]
Back above them, the Iron Valiant that Eris pinned cries out. Restrained though he is, immobilized, unable to move or cry pardon, he can still shout. He can still shoot. Energy gathers around the palm of his right hand. It fires out in a massive moon blast that turns darkness to pink light. Roland reverses mid-air, holding out his hand. Energy meets energy. “That guy up above’s gonna be a problem if he gets free.” The sheriff observes.

With a knight to fend off the dangers ahead, Aether hops onto the hostile one and begins to chatter right in their ears, unleashing a Bug Buzz to distract them from the ongoing fight.[break][break]

While the presence of his own Iron Valiant does make her frown, she votes not to show him too much of that expression when she looks back towards him. He's right that Reiner's Springtide Storm won't hold it back forever, but destroying their way back to cut it off really doesn't sound like a good idea. Instead, she reaches around into her backpack, rummaging for a bit before finally pulling out a pokeball.[break][break]

Metal seeps right out when it cracks open, surging towards the stairwell and beginning to climb upon the doorway. And thin threads reach out from either end, creating a sturdy web that soon buzzes with electricity enough to paralyse on contact. Given the nature of these creatures, they don't need to stop it forever. All they really need is to create enough time to take one down before facing the other.

What a brilliant girl, turning the energy that powers their quark drive into a powerful offensive tool. With one of the Iron Valiants paralyzed, it frees Navy and Roland to worry about the one right in front of them. Roland’s younger brother is but a newborn. Though he might be whole, he isn’t equipped for this fight. There’s a practiced ease to the iron knight’s blows. The younger machine seems to try and favor acrobatic maneuvers, twirling the twin blades around. Each time, he is met by the fae blade left to Roland.[break][break]
“Let’s break out the big guns. I’ve been waiting for this.” Navy holds out a black crystal. With all the tera crystals sitting under this island, the orb recharges at an alarming rate. Navy’s afforded a rare opportunity to use his tera crystal recklessly. Roland is encased in crystal before emerging with a crown of starlight.[break][break]
One single tera blast in the form of a decisive cut is all he needs. Whether his foe is man or machine, the Iron Valiant is taken aback by the display all the same. Roland delivers a swift, decisive cut. The machine explodes across the wall, wire and mesh being sent flying everywhere.[break][break]
“One less to worry ‘bout. You think you can grab the one up there?”

A swift cut is all that's need to disassemble the first Iron Valiant, the Illumina Joltik squeaking as he abandons ship and clings to Roland's frame by a thread. On the other hand, Navy might just be subject to one of the more horrible sights when he looks back. The mechanical creature is being melted alive, Mercury's body seeping into every new crack and hole formed as it greedily eats away at metal and circuitry.[break][break]

Eris watches on in silence, her lips twitching as her hand squeezes Reiner's shoulder. Then lightning strikes, a brilliant burst of a Rising Voltage ripping through the Iron Valiant's system before the reddish glow of its eyes finally fades.

“Bit sadistic, huh?” He quips, telling himself that the machines feel nothing. Looking in Roland’s eyes, he knows the thought for the lie it is. Considering the sounds of pain made by the melting Iron Valiant, he redoubles the lie. Soon it is nothing but a pile of melted metal on the floor. There it sizzles.[break][break]
Sheathing his sword, Roland pats the Joltik on his shoulder. For a moment, his eyes close. The machine looks to be smiling, as much as a machine can smile. Afterwards, he allows himself to be recalled into a pokeball without ceremony. His tera crown fades.[break][break]
“So…we’re at the bottom. Just a closed door. Wonder what’s on the other side.” Testing the door, he finds that it won’t budge. “We’ll need lots of elbow grease to get this door open, I think.”

[attr="class","inner-finally"]It's a quiet shake of her head that he receives in turn, the biting of lips and the aversion of her gaze as she calls Mercury back to her side.[break][break]

"Not supposed to exist... Imagined creatures from the interdream." She murmurs, kneeling down to pick a melting piece of circuitry out of the Melmetal's body. With how slowly it's continuing to devour the rest of the Iron Valiant, she winces and places the wire back in. "But it looked painful..."[break][break]

Holding tighter to Reiner, she holds her tongue as they continue to trek along. Aether just seems glad that nothing else is chasing them in the moment, his tiny chirps perhaps his attempt at explaining just how cool Roland had looked in the moment. It's times like this where she's thankful that she can't understand what they're trying to convey.[break][break]

Watching as Navy tries the door, she wonders if it's one of those doors where he'd disappear if she looked away for even a second. Just lean on it a certain way, or step within a certain range and out comes some ancient creature whose thousand-year slumber has just been interrupted.[break][break]

With how crazy Hoenn has gotten, she wouldn't be that surprised if they somehow found a portal to another dimension waiting beyond this door.
