it was especially rare these days that she went out on non-work-related business. nearly every hour was spent in the labs or wandering the wilds. that evening, however, she made her way to dorian westcliff's neck of the woods, in need a break.[break][break]

a cigarette was flicked into a puddle of street sludge on her way in. the sounds of nightlife thumped. mostly cursory glances greeted her, except for a few that stuck on her shoulder like gum on the bottom of a heel.[break][break]

she could feel it. first they’d stared because of darkrai. now, some of them stared almost as hungrily as the moto dragons had. in the midst of a wave of rockets defecting, rumors swirled about her scarcely explained absence.[break][break]

she stood taller, making her way to bar,where she sat to order a tequila. amber eyes wandered, not to meet stares of doubt, but to peer around for an old friend she knew was lurking somewhere.[break][break]

Takashi and Ogita would be the first to spot the former Head Scientist enter the club. Immediately, Takashi communicated the news to their boss over his earpiece. Meanwhile, Ogita shadowed the woman, as she made her way towards the bar. The large man knew his boss wouldn't want any harm to come to the familiar face. And he was going to make sure of it, ready to reign in anyone with the bright idea of attacking her.

When news of her arrival reached Dorian, the Mad Dog opted to greet her himself, rather than have someone escort her to the VIP lounge. Given her previous experiences with the Moto Dragons, the Orrean felt such a move wouldn't end well.

Sliding onto the seat next to her, Dorian smiled. "Well, I thought I'd never see you again, Lulu.", Dorian greeted her.

If she were to look, the first thing she'd notice was the lack of the distinct facial scar that marked out the infamous killer. Otherwise, his height, voice, and mannerisms were on point.

"I was worried about you.", he'd confide with sincerity.

she took in his smile carefully. when it seemed sincere, she smiled back. it wavered just a little when she realized the peculiar absence of his scar.[break][break]

decidedly strange. but how to even bring it up?[break][break]

”i appreciate that, dorian. it’s good to see you.” she picked her drink up again, feeling safe to take a sip. before she did she asked, ”how have you been?”[break][break]

Dorian had so many questions for the former Mad Scientist. Mostly about the circumstances of her disappearance, and where she had gone off to. He had been worried that she got herself captured by the League, somehow. That perhaps, remnants of the Moto Dragons might've tracked her down, and killed her.

Dorian continued to smile, just happy to see his old friend again. "A lot has happened, to be honest. Some good, some bad. Would you like to discuss more in the VIP lounge?", he'd offer her.

Of everything that Dorian had endured over the past several months, he was fortunate enough not to have experienced what many others had. If not for the aftermath of the attack on the prisoner transport by League forces, Dorian would've joined them. The horror stories they told him did nothing to quell the regret he felt for not being there, not joining them.

Dorian lead Lulu to the VIP lounge. It would be just as she remembered it, a relatively quiet oasis from the bustling floor down below. Dorian offered the ex-Head Scientist a seat at the booth, before taking a seat himself.

"Did they tell you that the League managed to worm their way into Sootopolis, and break out the prisoners we worked so hard to catch in the Ultra Sea?", he'd ask her.

The shame in Dorian's face and tone would be clear. He tried to stop them, but came up short.

the music was softer up in the lounge, better for conversation. she took a seat in the booth, setting her glass of caramel-colored anejo on the table.[break][break]

”i’m aware, yes.” it wasn’t really a conversation she’d had with anyone, but she had found out nonetheless. ”one of those prisoners was in my home laboratory. luka chêne . she had some connection to cresselia. still does, for all i know…”[break][break]

she studied the look on his face briefly, reading his disappointment. dorian seemed to thrive on violence. losing could not be easy for him.[break][break]

”what i haven’t heard is how it all happened.” the league's prison break.[break][break]

"Yes, among the damage done during the raid, someone broke into your home. After investigating, we believe it was none other than that traitorous cur, Remiel Calcifet.", Dorian would tell her.

Dorian pulled out a recently opened pack of cigarettes. Before taking one of his own, he would offer Lulu a cigarette, as well as a light. Whether or not she'd take it, Dorian would light one up for himself.

"It all started with the capture of a former Elite Four, Thomas Benoit. An affiliated bounty hunter managed to hand him off to us, in chains. Turns out, this was a part of his plan. He managed to break out of the cell our boys threw him in, having found a way to smuggle a full team of Pokemon in with him. After that, he went on a rampage through the jail, releasing prisoners along the way.", he'd begin.

"This was all to divert our response teams from the transport taking Elinor Anderson to the Submarine. A small team, including Laurence Anderson and John Sullivan, attacked the transport, escaping with the prisoners on board, including the Councilwoman. I was among those attempting to stop the attack, only to nearly fall to Sullivan.", he'd reveal to her.

"It's also how I lost my scar. In the course of the battle, we were caught in an explosion. Most of my face was blown off. Sullivan used his powers as Tapu Lele's Avatar to restore my face, before attempting to make an arrest. Smoochie Duckie evolved into a Magmortar, and saved me from that fate, however.", he'd continue.

His voice was full of regret. The Mad Dog took a long drag off of his cigarette, before exhaling to the side, away from Lulu.

t calcifet. anger sparked small and died, a flame that didn’t catch. her thoughts briefly snagged on the memory of the prince’s sister, as she reached out to take the offered cigarette and light with a muttered thanks.[break][break]

listening further, she was curious, attentive, but she lacked his disappointment. in the end, she didn’t care that they’d escaped.[break][break]

attention was brought to the disappearance of his scar, and she found herself uncomfortable. perhaps he’d caught her looking when she tried not to.[break][break]

the name of his magmortar caught her off guard. she raised her drink to her lips to hide the look on her face.[break][break]

”thank arceus for that.”[break][break]

her tequila was set back down after a sip. though there were a few questions she could ask, the regret in his voice caused her to refrain.[break][break]

”i’m glad you’re alive. fuck the rest, right?” she took a puff of her smoke before asking, ”what else have you been up to?”[break][break]

Though one would count themselves lucky to have not only come out of the conflict not only in one piece, but better off, Dorian didn't see it that way. He had one job: prevent the prisoner from escaping. And he couldn't even do that. At the end of the day, a failure was a failure.

"If you say so.", Dorian remarked with a weary sigh, taking a sip of his own drink.

"Been breaking in new recruits. After the rash in defections we've faced from the more - idealistic elements, I've been acting as a sort of gatekeeper. Better that we give them an immediate reality check, than let them make progress before they get cold feet, right?", Dorian informed her.

What he didn't know was that one of these traitors, Rowan Wrynn , was her half-brother. Though he was clearly referring to not only him, but Isaac Merlo , among others.

she thought of Rowan Wrynn , and then she considered, maybe if they had broken him in, beat him down or really scared him in some way to begin with, whatever it meant, he would not have stuck around to eventually wind up on their hit list.[break][break]

probably cruel in ways, but looking back from the far side of her own damnation, weeding them out early seemed more like a mercy.[break][break]

she lightly tapped the ash off her cigarette into a tray, eyes leaving his a moment before returning. ”personal question, feel free to pass, but i’m curious: what did you do before all this?” rocket, the gangs, the nightclub.[break][break]

she had asked no one else in rocket about their pasts so freely, having been mostly intent on minding her own business in that way. she knew how private a past could be, especially in their criminal world, full of painstakingly crafted lies and false identities.[break][break]

For someone like Dorian to consider mercy would've been seen as odd. Despite his dislike of idealists in Rocket, he felt they had their place outside of the organization. Useful idiots to be riled up by their plants in the community, universities, among other places. Potential martyrs that civilians could rally behind, should the League mishandle them.

As for those he filtered at the gates, he'd advocate for a simple memory wipe, to prevent them from talking about what little they saw.

"Me? I was just another street punk in Orre. Was a member of a smalltime gang operating in Pyrite Town from the age of eleven, until I was twenty, when we got wiped out. I managed to stow away on a freighter, which landed in Vermillion. It was there that THEO BECKETT found me, and brought me in.", he'd tell Lulu.

He had come to be familiar with Lulu's past as a Moto Dragon. After all, it was he who saved her from their misplaced retribution. Not that he was too stingy about his own background.

"If you don't mind me asking, what brought you into the Moto Dragons?", he'd inquire.

his next question she had not been asked before, and she likely would not have answered it if it had come from anyone else.[break][break]

”nothing worth so much trouble,” she joked at first, and then sighed.[break][break]

”my brother went missing when i was a kid. we were close; our parents were awful, so he was all i had really, and after he disappeared, i spent years trying to track him down…”[break][break]

She paused, eyes falling as she hesitated. it was strange to share these details. Eventually, she continued, “after a while of searching, I found him in kanto, and he’d joined team rocket. i wanted to join too, but he wouldn’t allow it, and told me to go back home.” she shook her head, and forced her eyes back to his. within them, there was shame, regret, and a touch of dark, self-deprecating humor.[break][break]

”so, of course, i went back to galar, and i joined the mafia, to prove that i could survive, and be good at it like him. to make a point that he was a fool for turning me away.”[break][break]

smoke danced from her nostrils, the ghost of a laugh.[break][break]

Dorian listened closely to the woman's story. The fact that she brought up her brother was a Kanto Rocket was a point of interest to him. Depending on how long ago her first attempt to get in was, he most likely knew her brother. Either way, a Galarian in the Kanto Branch did help narrow it down somewhat.

"Shame that you two were saddled with rotten parents.", Dorian told her empathetically. Though he never knew his parents, nor their situation, stories like hers didn't exactly make him feel he was missing out. While being an Orrean orphan was certainly not easy, at least he could say that the people running the orphanage were fair. That any punishment he took were genuinely his fault.

"So he tried to keep you clean of the underworld's stench, then? I can't say I really blame him.", he'd remark. "Not to insult you, or question your abilities. Just in the eyes of an older brother who cares about his little sister.", he'd quickly add.

There wasn't a day he didn't regret Eris Halla joining Team Rocket at such a young age.

"I see. I'm just glad you lived long enough to be one of us.", he'd tell her.

"Now, if you don't mind me circling back, you mentioned your brother was with Kanto Branch. If you don't mind me asking, would I happen to know him? In my five years in Kanto, I met all kinds of people. Mostly from Kanto itself, so a Galarian would stand out."
