It was what separated him, ultimately, from Rowan. He had committed countless atrocities in his desire first for power, then survival, then power again. He would do it again. Whatever it takes to survive.[break][break]

But also, a darker truth. What he'd answered, when someone had finally asked what he truly wanted from life.[break][break]

Self-serving. Selfish. Evil. Unrepentant.[break][break]

Yet not incapable of love, nor empathy, for he looks at Lulu with both reflected in his eyes, and in the sad smile he offers her.[break][break]

"I tried to warn you to stay away." It's not an apology, but it holds the weight of one. "I didn't want any of this for you."[break][break]

Not even Tempest Quinn was safe, should he betray Cillian's trust.[break][break]

as the air shifted from anger into what she perceived to be a greater sense of ease between the two of them, she felt less and less. her eyes fell once more to stare blankly past him at black waves, as they crashed against uncharted bloody beach, over and over.[break][break]

“well…” she sighed, ”i suppose i have work i need to tend to.” no rest for the wicked. while others had the excuse to sleep, she would return to her duties. to war. to destiny, perhaps.[break][break]

Letting out a breath that shivers in his lungs, Cillian finds he doesn't know what to do with the leftover emotions that roil in his chest. He shelves them, now, as best he can, and focuses on his sister.[break][break]

But there wasn't, was there?[break][break]

It feels an unfitting end to their argument, but he can't think of what else to say. He can't reassure her about Rowan, or about Rocket, or any of it. All he has to give is himself, his enduring presence. It doesn't feel enough.[break][break]

For now, they'd return to war.
