The wild routes of Hoenn were never a place to take lightly.

Moreso for the city boy that was Scott who, despite his relative skill with Pokemon and classification as a Ranger, had never really set foot outside of Slateport. Well technically, he had traveled all the way from Galar, but he was an infant then, he couldn’t remember it and so it doesn’t count. And yet, despite his inexperience, he was still driven to become a Ranger. Which occasionally meant stepping foot into the dangerous, green wilds.

With a deep, steadying breath, he placed a single foot in front of the other, officially the furthest he’d ever gone from home.

”Ya see that, Aurora?”

The brilliantly white Ninetales, tails like a cloud gently undulating and cover the immediate area in snow, thrilled lightly, nuzzling her trainer’s hand; they had known each other long enough now, she knew when he was happy, and she was happy for him! Even if he dragged the arctic creature into these warm, humid areas, it was fine!

’Alrighty, now keep ya eyes open, Aurora! We gotta catch some ‘mon. After all, the best way to avoid danger is to first embrace it wholeheartedly!”

Aurora’s delighted thrill matched the tone of Scott’s voice as he hummed to himself, slowly walking down the path. The only thing that marked as him different from the rank and file was the shining Ranger badge on his chest and the cloud of snow that followed the Ninetales beside him.

Old Route 110 was Josh's playground away from home. A decommissioned highway with a few cracks in its surface, it was still a perfectly serviceable road. Most importantly, speed limits were not enforced on it, meaning the Master of Faster could ride his Pokémon partners as fast as he could handle. He and his Pokémon were headed back from a busy day at Slateport City.

The black-haired man, seated on an Alolan Ninetales a little larger than he was, tensed his arms as he held the arctic fox's sparkling reins. Near her were two fire Pokémon: a Kantonian Ninetales and a rotund Hisuian Arcanine. The rock-furred dog was large, both in stature and in bulk. "Hyah!" Josh flicked his mount's reins. The three tore off to the north, looking like white and red comets as they put on speed that would have had the police after them if they tried to pull that off on the public highway.

The Gym Leader shifted his weight, thrown forward in the saddle as Rime slammed on the brakes at the rider's silent command. The fire-types did the same, Josh whooping from having to absorb the powerful momentum shift from his vulpine steed. While the other Ninetales was quick to stop, the Arcanine was not so privileged, the excess fat in his belly putting so much stress on his legs that he simply could not slow down like he once did when he was healthy.

”Woah, hey, what the hell?!”

The peaceful seaside walk was suddenly shattered by the sound of rushing air and the pattering of feet; pokemon moving at extreme speeds. Instantly, he was on edge; what could it be? Worry tugged on his throat, making him swallow, and Aurora, sensing his worry, brushed against him gently, weaving between his legs and positioning herself in front of him, as if trying to protect him from whatever danger was coming.

Scott barely had time to register this, though, before a red and black blur slid right past him, scattering rocks over both he and Aurora. A look of utter perplexity twisted his face as he covered it with an arm; were this a television show, question marks would be bursting over his head at the sheer oddity of the situation. Aurora was less faxed, covering her face with her paws and mewling slightly. It wasn’t until Scott removed his arm, shaking off the pebbles and dirt that had settled, and, blinking through the dust still hanging in the air, checked out his surroundings that he was capable of really parsing what was going on.

”Hey! What do you think you’re doing?! You could hurt someone- or worse, a Pokemon!”

He was indignant! This person on the altogether-too-large Pokemon could have caused some serious damage! Didn’t they even think of that? Luckily, the blur that he can now see was a Hisuian Arcanine (which was exciting for totally different reasons) didn’t hit him, or anybody else for that matter, which just left the scowling face of Scott to be dealt with! And as previously mentioned, he was very upset!

"Craggro, watch out! You're gonna crash into them!" Thankfully for the Gym Leader, the rotund dog was just nimble enough to run between them, though the pebbles flying from his mane at high speed couldn't have been pleasant for either the Ninetales or its trainer to handle. He turned toward the scowling trainer, his smile falling.

"I'm so sorry there," the Gym Leader apologized with sincerity. "This old road is so seldom traveled. It's rare for me to run into anyone out here; I use it as a place for my Pokémon to let loose and run." Craggro, finally stopping, turned around and approached Scott and Aurora with an apologetic whimper of his own. "Gym Leader Devlin and proprietor of Mauville Racing Grounds. Call me Josh. These three are Rime, Caprice, and Craggro," Josh introduced the superfast Pokémon, a Type: Null in the distance still catching up to them.

And just like that, all of Scott’s riotious indignation faded, disappearing like water down a drain.

”Ah, hell. It’s okay. No one’s hurt and that’s what really matters.”

Now that the heat of the moment was gone, Scott felt just a tad bit embarrassed about his outburst, the lightest of blushes scattering roses across his cheekbones. While he didn’t necessarily consider himself wrong for scolding this Gym Leader, honestly he should know better, there were so many better ways to do so. What was it his father used to say? “It’s not what you say but how you say it”? He felt ashamed, the overwhelming urge to apologize bubbling up in his chest, but he suppressed it. As foolish as he appeared for his outburst, it would only look even more ridiculous if he decided to apologize for something so minor, especially since Josh didn’t seem offended.

”Nice to meetcha. I’m Scott Baker, Ranger, and this is Aurora-”

He placed his hand on the head of Aurora who, despite her best intentions, was staring at the other of her species. Never before had the Ninetales seen another of her kind; it was exhilarating, in a way, to be face to face with someone who looked and smelled like her, even if they were so … big. As if on cue, however, there was the distinct sound of a Pokeball opening, and a small shape, heralded by the incessant yipping of a Growlithe, slammed its rocky head right into Craggro. It did no damage, of course, but Charcoal had to prove who was in charge.

Scott muttered a curse under his breath.

”I’m so sorry! He’s still in training. Charcoal!”

The Hisuian Growlithe, of course, did not heel, and instead busied himself with chewing on the Arcanine’s tail.

Judgmental yet understanding was what Scott came off as. The former was a trait Josh once had and had to work hard to quash, as it was not conducive to being a good leader. "Exactly," the Gym Leader nodded, Craggro catching his breath after the speedy run. "Beautiful day for it, too. If there wasn't maintenance going on at Mauville Gym, I'd have done this there."

Josh's eyes subtly widened when he heard Scott was a Ranger. "That's awesome! I'm one of Mauville's finest, too - second in command to Captain annalise henderson ," he borderline-bragged of his dual leadership position. "What city are you based out of? I don't recall you being on my roster."

While the two Alolan Ninetales seemed to get along, Rime attempting to converse with the seemingly-captivated Aurora, Craggro wasn't quite so happy with Charcoal nibbling on his tail. He faced the young Hisuian Growlithe, uttering a loud bark that could only mean one thing:

"Stop that!"

Noticing the commotion, Josh asked Scott, "Is your Growlithe a recent catch? If you can curb that behavior, you'll have a swift and loyal ride at your fingertips. Having Pokémon that can navigate rough terrain like that is really important as a Ranger," he preached his own admittedly biased mantra. "One for land, one for sea, and one for sky, and there's nowhere you won't be able to go. Even your Ninetales, with a strong enough Ice Beam, can fill in for an aquatic Pokémon in a pinch."

By now, Aleph the Type: Null had caught up to both of them, an absolutely massive Swellow hanging from its blood-soaked mouth. There were also burn marks, electrical and fire, all over one of the giant's left wing - evidence of TRI ATTACK having been used on it. "Aleph, a little restraint is important when handling wild Pokémon," he chided the rare, chimeric species, tapping an empty Poké Ball against the bird in the hopes that it wasn't too far gone. A Pokémon Center would be best to make that determination. If it could recover, though... was this Swellow big and strong enough to bear his weight in flight?
