In real life, his laugh would have been dismissive. Maybe even chiding. “Everywhere’s a grave.” With trillions of dead in history, he doubted there was a single foot where somebody hadn’t died. Who knew how many Rattata or Trapinch corpses piled up beneath their feet? “I’d like mine to be useful.” That was the beauty of life. Everything had its place. Even the dead.

As the talk continued, Kazuya shook his head. War was hell? Sure. But it wasn’t the deepest one. It left you free. “At least you know who to fight.” In his case? It was people like Josh. But, if the day came he had to snap his neck, he’d look the guy in the eye while doing it. As the talk turned to lost Pokemon Kazuya felt his brow pinch. “It’s not about how they ride.”

It was their souls. The way he understood them as much as his heart. How felt like an extension of his blade.

Kazuya shrugged. “Guy’s a dick.” However, he supposed that distrust was warranted. It was those so-called detectives who’d left him to rot in jail. The same idiots believed the fake evidence that was tossed at their feet. In the end, it wasn’t the truth they wanted but a nice, clean solution.

The introduction is met with a grunt. “I know.” He paused. “I watch the circuit.”

Unlike the last few Pokemon, Kazuya did not react outwardly to the next intruders. He was pretty happy with his haul today, even if none of them were what his heart truly wanted. A Palafin with a familiar tattoo across its tail and chest.

"In theory, anyway," Josh continued, Vitani getting a little anxious. The Pyroar gently nuzzled Josh, then Kazuya if he allowed it. "In practice, there are so many nice people trapped on the other side of the aisle. They don't deserve to die. If it were so simple, the war would have ended by now, one way or another." A brief quizzical look found its way onto Josh's face as Kazuya criticized him. Their souls were important, yes, but to Josh, the way they felt with reins in hand was important, as well.

It was his career, after all, whether as a Gym Leader or in the chase for the Silph Cup. He could not wait for his community service to be over so he could get back on the circuit again.

Kazuya's uncouth remarks about Nikita caught Josh totally off guard. "Wow, that's a surprise," he replied. "That's inevitable, though; there will be people out there you don't get along with."

Given his fame, introductions may not have been needed. Even so, not everyone followed sports or the Gym circuit. "Do you just follow it, or do you participate, too?"

An inner understanding of Josh’s words is why he’s talking to the guy instead of strangling him. Sure, he’d do it if someone asked him to, but there’s not any benefit in doing it now. “War’s never simple.” It was made up of people after all. And, last he checked, humans weren’t like chess pieces. They didn’t operate logically either. “Anyone who says it is trying to recruit you.”

The quizzical look just receives a resigned smile. Some people get fixated on the weirdest stuff. But there wasn’t any harm in being Speed Racer, not as long as he cared about the mount he was riding. Which, if the televised matches were anything to go by, Devlin did. The Pokemon looked well-fed and happy enough.

Kazuya nodded. “Fact of life.” In his glory hog days, he’d actually thrived on the anger of his enemies. Those nasty comments in the video section? He enjoyed responding to them in a sickly sweet way. In press conferences, he sometimes thanked the trolls. But nowadays, there was more death threats than admiration. It took the fun out of it.

“I used to.” Kazuya shrugged. He certainly wanted to try again. But it would be hard to find time to play trainer with a fucking war breathing down their necks. “I was Lavaridge's pride and joy. Fans called me the kindler.” Kind of a stupid nickname, but trying to change it had proved impossible. It’d be easier to swim up a waterfall.

As he turned from Josh, his eyes caught on a Raichu sifting through the shore in search of shells and munches. His heart twisted as his original starter comes to mind. The Pichu who’d once laid across his hair like a hat. The way his bangs refused to stay down in the little sparkplug’s vicinity. “Just not sure I want to start over.”

It felt like giving the gym circuit a go would be spitting in the face of his most stalwart allies. Like he was giving up somehow.

Josh had already been recruited. Indoctrinated. As Mauville's Gym Leader, he was among their most entrenched. It was not yet to the level of fanaticism, but the more he rose up the ranks, the more he would naturally be inclined to become so. Little did he know Kyle's final gift to him would drag him deeper into the war than he ever wanted to be.

Such was the reward for standing out: more work. Dangerous work.

It made sense that Kazuya's Pokémon were so obedient and well-raised now. "The Kindler of Lavaridge..." Josh mused. "Sounds like we could have a wonderful match one day." He silently nodded along, the hopping Froakie bringing CIAN MAHER to mind, but only briefly as troubling words came out of his acquaintance's mouth.

"...Start over? No one can take your badges from you once you earn them. What do you mean?"

He’s watched Josh’s matches on television. If he felt like it, he’s pretty sure he could wipe the floor with the speed-obsessed ranger. . “I’ll be sure to swing by one day.” But there’s a bittersweet taste to the idea of it. ”Really fire things up.” It's an ironic catchphrase from his days on the circuit. Kazuya had never used a fire Pokemon in his battles and had no plans to start. But some guy had started it, and it’d stuck like chewed bubblegum. These days, they probably meant he’d commit arson.

The man laughed. It’s a buzzing, erratic sound. What were eight pieces of tin without the team that’d gotten him there? Somehow the League had managed not to lose those. Just something far more important. “It’s not about badges, Devlin.” In some dusty book, he was still a Champion. But in newer ones, he was also a terrorist or monster—the stain on his reputation something good PR couldn’t wipe clean. Sure, he happened to be a criminal now, but they’d backed him into it.

The radio at his side grows in volume as if “The warden confiscated the team that got me there.” Now, he was stuck with a bunch of babies and new acquisitions. They were not an extension of him as his Palafin or Raichu had been.

“Then, they lost them.” There’s a spike of rage as he pushes himself to his feet. The golden eyes spark like storm clouds as anger threatens to drown him momentarily. To turn this conversation into a sea of uncharacteristic red. A ball rockets out lethally fast as he tosses it at a lurking Electabuzz. “Typical bureaucrats.”

Any thought of reclining by the beach fades. With a final glance at the younger man, the Kindler moves to depart. In that face, he now sees everything he hates. All those years of learning to control that temper are turning to stardust. “Have a good night.” A sharp whistle brings his Pokemon back to him as they are returned in a burst of red light.

Josh as a Gym Leader was not too challenging to beat, as long as challengers did their homework. With ground-type Pokémon and ways to counteract high-speed Pokémon, such as Trick Room or Gyro Ball, it wasn't difficult for reasonably skilled trainers to win. Josh as a Champion, though, was another story.

The demeanor of the conversation immediately changed when Kazu's eyes sparked like storm clouds. Was this what Josh looked like when he was angry? It was a frightening gaze. "I am so sorry for your loss," Josh apologized. "Did you open up a case with the League? Hoenn's got some unbelievable detectives that could piece this together and track them down."

It seemed he was holding in a lot of anger, wanting to get away from the Gym Leader. That or not let his anger spill over and get into a brawl with him here. That could wait for when they met at Mauvillle. "Have a good one," Josh said his farewell before taking a seat on Vitani's back, the Pyroar speeding back toward Mauville.
