[attr="class","kazu2"]Some part of him wondered if he had been a sailor in a past life. As he stared out over the ocean, he felt a strange connection to it. As if a siren beckoned him toward it. Unfortunately, its calls could not be heeded. With the loss of his dear friends, sea travel remained an impossibility. Even his arms could only tread water so long. [break][break]


And, unless he wished to crush his Wooper’s spine, it would be of no real use on Hoenn’s warm currents. She will grow. Be patient. So, with a fishing pole in hand, the man approached the waterfront. Ignoring the tourist-covered sands in favor of something craggier, he took a seat at the water’s edge. From a pouch at his side, dark hands scattered bait in the water.[break][break]


With a happy noise, his Wooper dove in to sample it. "Wooop!" A soft smile crossed the giant man’s face. A salty breeze gently stirred his hair, the scarf out of place with his shorts and sleeveless top. Looking like a child’s rod in his hands, his pole bobbed gently with the waves.[break][break]


“Take a seat, friend.” A voice emerged from somewhere near the ground. Kazuya’s mouth did not move. It rarely did. Golden eyes shifted to face the presence he felt behind him. “I do not own the shore.”

There wasn't a lot of time left in the year before even Hoenn's waters southeast of Mauville became too cold to traverse on a raucous Pokémon like a Sharpedo. Today was one of the last days of the year where it would be warm enough to do so. With no tickets in RangerNet where Josh's water-types could shine, he felt like he could afford to take a single day off, bringing Snacker and several of his other Water-types with him to the bay.

"Snacker, AQUA JET!" cried a male voice, though at the distance it was at, may have been difficult for to recognize. What would have been easier to recognize was a Sharpedo bouncing along the waves like a speedboat. The tall human on its back was hooting and hollering as he rode across the sea at seemingly unsafe speeds, a sharp turn kicking up quite a bit of surf and splashing water in the fisherman's direction, perhaps a little too close for comfort.

[attr="class","kazu2"]For a moment, golden eyes lock on the boy and his Sharpedo. It reminds him of time spent with Akio—his brazen Palafin. A large hand waves to wave at the pair. His Wooper, meanwhile, races away in an attempt to follow the gym leader. “Woop! Woop!” His little legs paddle like mad. A small smile of amusement follows as the Wooper leaps from the water and bobbles its head in a cheap imitation of a wave. The white-haired man’s hand falls Kazuya turns to face what he believes is a fellow traveler.

He intended to issue another invitation to sit down. The feeling of someone standing behind him made the hair on his neck stand up. “What is wrong, friend? Cat have your—?” Golden eyes widen. “Ah.” A Magnezone hovers behind him with a single, judgmental eye. The magnets on its arm spin idly as it drifts closer to Kazuya. The mercenary does his best not to panic or react. At such close range, he would be deceased before he reached a Pokeball. “BZZZZZZ!” The beeping and static reach a crescendo as the metal Pokemon reaches the man’s fishing pole.

With pursed lips, Kazuya offers the rod to the electric type. “Bzzzt! Beep!” Its red eye turns blue as it begins swinging the stick around. It appeared he had a fellow fisherman on his hands. With a nod, Kazuya tosses more bait onto the water. Turning back to the water, the odd couple settles into an almost amicable silence.

The waving got Josh's attention, the Gym Leader pulling back on Snacker's steering fin. With a powerful flail that caught even him a little off guard, the water-type killed a lot of his speed as to not slam his rider into the sandy shore from stopping in the shallows. The shark's rider briefly withdrew him after dismounting, only to send him back out again to get him free from the sand his bottom fin was stuck in.

The Gym Leader was about to send out one of his Pyroar to help with the Magnezone, but the white-haired man seemed to have little trouble. Once their battle was over, Josh greeted him properly. "Hi there! Did you need something?" he asked. While he was in his blue Ranger uniform, he was technically off duty.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The white-haired man smiled as the Sharpedo pivoted. Water was a beautiful, fluid thing. Such flexibility would have once served him well. “Watch for the shallows.” Kazuya immediately recognized the young gym leader. Just because he’d jumped off the championship circuit did not mean he was ignorant. There was still some thrill in watching others ascend the ranks. [break][break]

As Josh withdrew his Sharpedo, Kazuya stood. Again, he looked like a ventriloquist. “I did not.” Muscular arms crossed over his chest. “I was simply waving.”

For a moment, Kazuya stared contemplatively out at the water. It seemed he had forgotten the other was there. But this was soon proven wrong. His chest expanded as he took a deep breath of salty air. For a moment, golden eyes glittered with tears. Arceus, he had almost never seen this again. Some part of him still didn’t believe it. “I forgot how beautiful the sea is.” The taste of salt tickled his lips. “I wonder if this is what it takes to appreciate it.” [break][break]

“Woo!” A chirping noise from further upshore drew Kazuya’s gaze. Golden eyes widened as his Wooper flipped a way up the shore. Beneath her, an old Carracosta blinked. It did not look happy. This time, his hands did beckon. What he did not expect was for the turtle to come along. With a grouchy grumble, the gargantuan beast dropped the Wooper back on the shore.

"Good to hear; glad everything seems to be under control," Josh replied. Though he was off duty, Mauville's top Elite was still ready to help those in need at a moment's notice. Rangers were never truly off duty. "It's even more beautiful from the back of a water Pokémon," the Gym Leader continued. "I'm taking advantage of it before it gets too cold. Winter's coming, even if it's not nearly as harsh as Johtonian ones."

The Gym Leader let Vitani out of her Poké Ball again, the large lioness stretching her legs as she distanced herself from the shore. Though they were near water, she had every right to enjoy herself, too! The sands of the bay were bright, and they were about to get brighter as the sun began to pierce through the overcast skies. "Ever thought about catching a big water Pokémon for yourself? With how rough travel can be in Hoenn, having a reliable partner is a huge asset."

[attr="class","kazu2"]The older man chuckles. However, this time, his lips move with the gesture. This wide, somewhat shy smile takes center stage on all of his trainer cards. “My size has its benefits.” Creatures tended to assume he was a threat. This led many smaller Pokemon to avoid his presence entirely. The same went for people, unfortunately. Perhaps that assumption is why he was so fiery in his youth. [break][break]

“It has been some time since I enjoyed the privilege.” Kazuya’s digital voice box cannot adjust the volume, so this thing (which would be typically whispered) is the same volume as everything else. The gym leader’s excitement is contagious. “It is a good reminder of our true significance.” When he used to swim with his Palafin, there were many times they would hit the open sea. All around them would be nothing. Back then, that didn’t teach him anything. It just showed he was too tough for anything to mess with. But now? Well, it’d be a different experience. [break][break]

Kazuya laughed. “Johtoan winters have their benefits too.” Like adorable little scarves and natural ice-skating rings. Oh, and illegal, high-security, off-the-grid hellholes. [break][break]

Turning slightly, Kazu watched as the lioness took her stride. There was something alluring about powerful women, no matter their species. This distracted gaze remains at Josh’s suggestion. “I used to have one.” A silent sigh follows. “He was taken from me.” And, if he ever met the rat who sold them, he would snap their necks. Even honor had its limits. [break][break]

His eyes widen as a strange bird begins to run toward the lion. Its movements are fluid with the grace and candor of a dancer. Bright tail feathers fan beneath it as it nears the Pyroar, inviting it to dance. “Hm.” What a delight! Enrapturing creature! His Wooper called out accidentally beside him. “What a stunning Pokemon.” He nods toward the Quaquaval. [break][break]

The baby Pokemon wiggles impatiently. She starts to stamp around in time to the flash duck’s beat. Beady eyes lift to her trainers. He nods.. “Go ahead.” [break][break]

Josh, too, had an intimidating demeanor about him. It was one that scared many smaller Pokémon away, especially when he was traveling on one of his Pokémon. It was a good thing the Gym Leader typically sought only larger ones! "They do," the Gym Leader answered. "You certainly won't see Hoenn hosting any Winter Games anytime soon." Bobsleds, ski competitions, and other sports involving snow were impossible here. They often took place in Johto's mountains to the north.

Hearing Kazuya's story about a stolen water Pokémon made Josh frown. "I'm so sorry! No one deserves that. If it would help, I have a second water Pokémon if you want to go out to sea and look for one! It's about as nice of a day as it can be this time of year." Josh knew what it was like to have a friend taken from him. His Beedrill had been confiscated by the League for a horrible crime he had committed with it in his most desperate moment. An eyesore on an otherwise spotless record. "Have you talked to Sokolov Investigations about it? They're a really good PI."

The lioness accepted the invite to dance, doing her best to keep up with the rhythm but ultimately failing to do so. "Thanks," Josh nodded. "She's one of ten."

The way even his younger self stared out at his first snowstorm in a child-like daze almost sprang to mind. But there was a lot of trauma between then and now. It sanded those bright spots to monochrome grey. “They may keep it.” That region needed some claim to fame.

At the offer, Kazuya shook his head. His scarf shifted to reveal a bright line across his throat. “I appreciate the offer.” From here, he could watch the sea just fine. A pink dot appeared on the horizon before vanishing beneath the water. A small school of Corsola in search of a safe, poison-free place to rest? “But another Pokemon will not replace him, and it’d be wrong of me to try.” He planned to get his friend back, by any means necessary.

At the talk of Sokolov Investigations, the silver-haired man laughs. “Hah! That old hound?” He’d written to him in prison before communications were cut off. Those letters were ignored. No detective rushed to his rescue. These so-called bastions of justice were content to turn a blind eye, just like everyone else. "Doubt it’s interesting enough for him." A Cramorant’s silhouette dapples the man’s face in shadow. “I will just have to hope fate is kind.” Or, at least, it had been kind to them.

The Wooper’s excitement ended with a dizzy spell. With a noise of delight, it falls on its paddled tail. It turns to Kazuya and grins, revealing a toothless void of a mouth. "Wooooop!" Her trainer’s indulgent gaze slips back to the lion. “You must have quite the space.” After a moment of struggling, the water-ground type stumbled back to its feet.

"Not to say winter activities aren't impossible, but having a public event out at the Silent Icelands seems irresponsible, what with it being a Pokémon mass grave," Josh added. "I'm just relieved I didn't lose any of mine that day. I am familiar with the pain of loss all too much. I'm sure you've heard it from many others here, but... war's hell."

Josh understood Kazu's sentiment; many of his dead Pokémon he refused to replace. Another Braviary, not even Sirocco, would replace Slider. It would prove to be a big obstacle of realizing his dream of owning one of every saddle-worthy common Pokémon. "I feel that. I've lost Pokémon in the war, too. I tried it with Vayu, my Corviknight that was supposed to replace Bora. They just don't ride the same."

Josh looked surprised to hear Kazu's poor experiences with the detective. "Really? They've helped me out of more jams than I'd care to admit." Perhaps the difference was the privilege of being a VIP. Those people seemed to bend over backwards to help League officials, especially moneyed League officials. "I do have quite the space. I'm actually Gym Leader Devlin of Mauville, but please, Josh will do."
