"They made ANOTHER one?" Howard sounded offended. Where was his video game adaptation? Nobody talked about the time he had fought his way out of Sinnoh's frozen north with nothing but a spoon and a single match. That would make a great game! Or movie, he wasn't picky.

Whatever, it was time to play a game.

"Role? You've gotta be shitting me. The people who made this are Dungeon and Dragonites fans?" Howard huffed, before picking the wizard role. He was smart! Besides, with all the languages Howard knew, there was definitely a wizard spell somewhere in there.

"Eh? Wait a second!" Howard threw his phone into the corner and immediately began to panic. How did the game know his name. What sort of black magic was this? Howard's name was used on the app store, sure, but how did it know to use it for this interaction?

There was only one possibility: the game was haunted.

Fuck.

Alright, think Howard. The archaeologist frowned as he looked at phone, now in the corner of his room. He had dealt with haunted ruins, a sentient statue, and an exploding Yamask. He could deal with a haunted video game. Crawling towards his phone, Howard peered down the list.

"Aha! I'll do level one! That'll be nice and easy." Howard smiled as his phone beeped out. "EPOCH RUINS SELECTED."

When he had thrown his phone, the screen must've hit something and chosen his level! Oh well, at least it wasn't Death Crater.

Howard had seen Shalin ride several of these Pokemon. None of them looked like they ended well without several belt straps and a prayer. Flit would turn Howard's insides into jelly, Queen Zing reminded Howard of an unfortunate expedition into a jungle temple, and riding a Kommo-o could not be comfortable.

"Hmm... Another option?" Howard tapped it thoughtfully, only to let out a breath of delight as an Aerodactyl option appeared.

"Yes, this is the one!"

Shalin looks disappointed, but respects the decision for you to take your own Pokémon to the desert ruins. Regardless of travel arrangements, once the two explorers arrive, Shalin recalls Serena, landing squarely on her feet as her mount disappears from underneath her. "We're here! C'mon, let's take a look inside!"[break][break]

Shalin leads the way to the Epoch Ruins' entrance hall, its prominent feature six pillars adorned by a small row of Unown hieroglyphs on the bottom, with a single, ornate one near the middle of each. She stops when she notices the "eyes" of the hieroglyphs moving, even staring at her. Several of those eyes seem to be following you, as well.[break][break]

"Oh, that's just not fair! Why didn't the game developers just ask me for a consultation? I would've translated all of these runes for them myself." Howard shook his head in utter disbelief, unaware that translating them outside of the game was essentially meaningless.

"Unowns are pretty cool, all things considered." Howard deflated slightly. He had studied Unowns in university. They were a pillar for modern linguistics. Any archaeologist or linguist worth their salt knew a smidge about Unowns.

Although Howard had to admit, wasn't there a Team Rocket Head Scientist super interested in Unowns? What was their name again? Nathan? Nellie? Know-me? Maybe Naomi Sato?

Whatever.

As you step between the second row of pillars with the hieroglyphs on them, a circular trapdoor opens. You, Shalin, and your Pokémon slide down a long, large chute that deposits you in the bottom corner of, from the shape of the room you land in, a buried pyramid.[break][break]

Shalin, a bit shaken up after the fall, sends out her Pyroar, Kiara. Her mane, glowing in reds, oranges, and yellows, dimly lights the entire room. With little to do here, she leads the way into a hallway full of Ekans and other snake Pokémon that fill the air with venomous needles of POISON STING headed your direction.[break][break]

Snakes were pretty shitty. Howard had been bitten by several during his journeys, and it was never a particularly enjoyable time. Being attacked by Ekans while traveling through Johto was a terrible memory, and any experienced adventurer knew that Poison-type Pokémon were the most dangerous while out in the wilderness. All it took was one sting...

Howard's socket itched. Blasted nerves.

"Wait." Howard scratched his chin. There was this technique that was used by wandering desert nomads to charm Sandcobra. Howard had only seen it done, but this was a video game, right? Logic didn't apply here. How different could the SHALIN NARIYA ADVENTURE ROUTE be from Varoom Kart 64?

Very. Oh well.

Your dance attracts the attention of the snakes, creating a diversion for Shalin to flee to the southeast. While you are able to charm many of the poison-types and they slither away, two of them are not impressed, injecting venom into you with their POISON STINGS. Though potent, you manage to survive the blows before crushing them with a Pokémon's blow.[break][break]

Around the corner, you scurry over a sandy-brick floor that looks like it could give way beneath your feet if you stand on it too long; you can catch glimpses of where the floor had broken apart and gave way to quicksand below.[break][break]

As you investigate the next chamber with a curious mural of what appears to be a seven-eyed rock titan, your keen perception reveals a camouflaged tunnel leading to what appears to be a treasure vault full of ROCK GEMS, ICE GEMS, and STEEL GEMS. Their light illuminated three more murals, each depicting a different seven-eyed titan. Your KNOWLEDGE of the supernatural as a WIZARD lets you detect the presence of an intricate trap, its energy coming from the rock titan's seven eyes. Shalin is off on her own, investigating another part of the chamber,[break][break]

Seriously? What were these options? Was the average Shalin Nariya Adventure Route player a complete sociopath? Most of these options were completely terrible! Envisioning the possible options, most of them ended with Shalin clonking Howard on the head with a shiny gemstone and leaving him for dead.

Was this game secretly a trap to check for potential Rockets? Howard could imagine several of his colleagues checking these other options. Man, most of his coworkers were terrible.

The Poison Stings were a pain, but luckily this was a video game. It wasn't painful, but reading about the Poison Stings made Howard's eye itch. Bad memories.

You show Shalin the vault, pointing out where its traps are located. You take several winding turns before arriving at its center, where the two of you are able to safely grab as many of the ROCK, STEEL, and ICE GEMS as you can carry. Among the scattered gems is a SMALL KEY not unlike what the Pokémon Klefki normally carry with them. Having already seen a locked gate inside the Epoch Ruins, you can't help but feel it's a good idea to take it with you.[break][break]

You obtained a SMALL KEY! This key will open any one locked door. You can use it only in this dungeon.[break][break]

Shalin's vision turns toward the murals of three geometric-looking, bipedal Pokémon, each with seven yellow eyes. One appears to be wrought out of pure stone; another, pure ice; another, pure metal. All three seem to be wreaking untold havoc on an ancient Hoenn. "Whatever those three things are, they look terrifying to meet. I hope to never see them," she muses as you guide her out of the vault.[break][break]

With that, your keen vision lets you detect a quartet of inert Runerigus, taking a path that will prevent them from activating and firing a barrage of beams in your direction. You loop around to a room with a large turnstile in it. To get to the room with the snake Pokémon and locked gate in it, you had to rotate it counterclockwise. Now, it seems to only want to rotate clockwise. You'll have to find another way back there if you want to open that locked gate with your new key...[break][break]

Continuing to an unexplored wing of the lowest level, you enter what appears to be a gathering hall with a stage and a back entrance. There was a large open space both in front and toward stage right. The hall has several exits, and is otherwise empty. You can faintly hear squeaking noises originating from beyond the far south passage.[break][break]
