"Man." Howard huffed as he obtained the map. If only treasure hunting was this easy in real life. Opening a chest and finding a map? Please, that map would've been trapped with at least thirty different trip wires and an exploding pressure plate. Even then, the map would likely be too damaged to do anything!

How unrealistic.

At least it let him look at the layout of the ruins. He took note of the white boxes separating each area, alongside each doorway. He wasn't a gamer, but a white block with a key symbol on it was pretty self explanatory.

"You'd have to be a fool not to get it!" Howard cackled, fully aware that he barely knew how to write an email.

You head through the passage on the stage-right side of the gathering hall. In what you believe is the northwesternmost corner of the underground pyramid, iron bars gate the way to a staircase leading upward, and there is an extremely thick glass enclosure surrounding what appears to be a switch of some sort that dimly glows red. The only gap in the glass is several feet wide but only a few inches tall, and part of the glass wall blocks every direct angle to the switch.[break][break]

It does not seem like you have the tools necessary to activate the switch yet, but you commit its location to memory. You return to the gathering hall to look for additional clues and share your additional findings with her.[break][break]

You head through the south passage and find the source of the squeaking: a swarm of Raticate that seem to mind their own business. The two of you pore over the map, and you can indeed confirm you are roughly four stories underground. On the east side of the room, there is a gate under lock and key. Cross-referencing your MAP, you confirm it would lead you near where you entered the pyramid's depths from. You deduce that as long as you can access the turnstile from three sides, you can go in any direction you want.[break][break]

With reluctance, you use your SMALL KEY to open the barred gate to the southeast. With the ability to access the turnstile from three directions, you can go anywhere within its chamber with a bit of backtracking.[break][break]

In the room beyond is a wall of thick glass surrounding yet another strange apparatus: a large metal sphere with a track to roll on. On the other side of the track is a raised floor panel.[break][break]

"Ah, the ol' sphere puzzle. Yes, yes. I've seen that in a ruin before. Except the sphere actually belonged to a giant Rellor."

Man, good times.

The map was beginning to fill out quite nicely, but Howard suspected that he'd end up missing a few rooms by the time this was over. No doubt, there were cleverly hidden secrets within if Howard pondered it, but he wasn't particularly good at video games that weren't Varoom Kart 64 or Gholdengoeye.

"Go, Crumble!" Howard deployed his Claydol.

You call on your psychic-type Pokémon and command it to move the orb from within. It mentally moves the metal sphere along the track within the glass enclosure, though progress is slow. As the round object reaches the end, you hear a loud click, followed by a clink as another SMALL KEY drops from the ceiling. With nowhere else to explore, you take the SMALL KEY back to the locked door to the east of the turnstile room.[break][break]

Beyond and upstairs is a septet of standing coffins surrounding a dais with a latched, ornately-carved chest in it. Everything seemed quiet...too quiet. It was such an obvious trap, but curiosity's allure could be difficult to overcome.[break][break]

Oh, please. It was an obvious trap. Too obvious. More likely it had an exploding latch or triggered a trip wire than anything useful, but it wasn't like Howard could inspect the chest. Howard peered at the options.

Or could he...

This was one thing that Howard loathed about games and adventures like this. It felt mostly out of his hand. Oh, sure. Howard could tell that the latch on the chest was a Frandel Trap, meant to harm the user. Virtual Howard, on the other hand? Fuck that guy, he was an idiot. He had to roll to get killed my the magic chest.

Howard peered at the screen. His eye danced across the various menus, options, and everywhere he possibly could. Finally, he was forced to come to a tragic conclusion: he couldn't find the legendary Infinity Meter. Such a revelation made the archaeologist want to break down into tears. Yet instead of cry, he had to push on. For exploration, for archaeologist, for Shalin, for adventure!

But first, he had to backtrack.

Fuck. He hated doing this in Beheeyem 2: Return of Samuel. Backtracking was a plague. Suddenly, Howard was remembering why he didn't play many video games. Hell, even the fucking boomerang was going to backtrack towards him if he threw it.

As you head through the door frame directly to the west, a stone slam slides downward into its space with a thud, preventing you from backtracking. The chamber is split in two by a wall of iron bars, shelled Pokémon of various species banging against it in vain efforts to attack you. Directly in front of you is a gap that is not difficult to jump over. Looking down it, you can see the top of an enormous turnstile. You could slide down its slope to get back to the first floor, but getting back up won't be easy even with a flying Pokémon.[break][break]

In the southwest corner, light appears to be filtering down from above. It appears to be large enough that you could get up there with a flying Pokémon, if you wanted.[break][break]

Traditionally, you wanted to delve deeper into ruins. That didn't mean going upwards, towards the sky.

At least, that was the case normally. Hoenn had several exceptions to the classic rule of tomb delving, such as the ruin he and Shalin had explored together. Hopefully, there wasn't a Mega Pidgeot on the third floor of these ruins, or something equally terrifying. Beyond that ruin, there was also Sky Pillar, a ruin that was a tribute to Rayquaza.

So why not go up? Worst case scenario, Howard could always glide back down. He could try fighting the Pokémon with his boomerang, but why fight unnecessarily?

Up he went.

With help from your Pokémon, you barely make it up the confines of the hole in the ceiling.[break][break]

As you advance southward past the mostly-empty hall, you are swept off your feet thanks to a slick patch of floor covered in an oil-like substance. Sliding through a crawlspace, it deposits you in another mostly empty room, though this one contains a Bisharp wielding a vicious-looking ball-and-chain. Bisharp are dangerous Pokémon as is; one using that on top of its natural weapons could put on some serious hurt.[break][break]

Keeping your distance from it for now, you see a small pit in the corner, roughly half the size of the one you flew through to get to the third level. While you can get no more than a glance down it trying to keep away from the Bisharp, it looks like it will take you to a lower level of the pyramid. You also get a glance through the passage to the east, which appears to contain an ornate treasure chest resting on top of a dais on the chamber's far side.[break][break]

Why fight unnecessarily, he said. It was a waste of time, he said.

Macro Cosmos was reading his mind at every single turn. As soon as he wanted to avoid a fight, a Bisharp had manifested from the ether to ruin his life. Whenever he found the developer who made this game, he was going to give them a macro cosmic-sized slap on the head.

Until then, he had to deal with this Bisharp.

Fighting a Bisharp at range seemed really stupid. They had swords for a reason, and they knew how to use them. It was like challenging a Snorlax to an eating competition—unfathomably idiotic. Luckily, he did have a boomerang to throw at the enemy. Hopefully the Bisharp didn't sever it, or something equally obscene.

Your skillful throws, along with a little WIZARDRY helping you understand how to harness the ROYAL BOOMERANG's INFINITY ENERGY, cause it to whirl through the air so fast that it looks like a floating disc. The Bisharp steel themselves against your attacks. Though many of them fall, two survive. In self-defense, they lash out at you and Shalin with their METAL CLAWS, drawing blood from each of you as their natural weapons leave you with stinging cuts.[break][break]

Though you bear scars of battle, you are ultimately victorious, and to the winner go the spoils. Within the ornate chest is a truly valuable artifact: the COMPASS of the Epoch Ruins.[break][break]

You obtained the COMPASS! Now you can see the locations of many things hidden within the dungeon! This COMPASS even has a new feature -- you will hear a tone when a KEY is nearby![break][break]

Backtracking is misery. The day Macro Cosmos added Skip Travel to this game was the day Howard didn't contemplate throwing himself off a bridge.

He had a compass though, which was nice. It was a treasure compass, which was even better. If he had one of those, he wouldn't be constantly hounding for an extension on his rent. The woe of an underpaid medium... Alas.

It was time to return to the stage and check on that switch. Maybe if he flicked it, something cool would happen.
