He wasn't going to complain about Shalin getting the shiny rock. Howard had a ton of those in his apartment, so it made sense that the virtual Shalin got to keep a few pixels on his screen. Besides, it wasn't like he could sell a virtual item. That'd be stupid.

As his eye lingered on Shalin's life, he began to suspect that exploring every section of the pyramid would be impossible. It seemed like the win condition was to find the second item that Shalin was looking for. Maybe it was something related to the Legendary Giants these ruins were themed around.

Hell if he knew.

"Alright, hopefully this Pyroar doesn't die." Howard muttered nervously to himself. If it died, Shalin's HP would likely crash. Not ideal for him or the virtual girl inside his phone. "Let's boogie."

"The Chrome Medallion, one of the Medallions of Eight that will open the Halls of Origin," she simply answers before reiterating how important is is to hold on tight.[break][break]

You climb onto Kiara's back, sitting behind Shalin. On a count of three, she snatches the BEEDRILLITE out of the air. As if on cue, the cage surrounding you retreats to the ground, a rising slab closes off the passage behind you. A maze of spikes rises from the floor beyond. A stream of quicksand pushes against the fire-type, impeding her process across the spike maze's labyrinthine corners. A deafening thud booms in the long chamber as the reality sinks in.[break][break]

The walls are closing in on the two of you.[break][break]

After concluding full manual control will be futile, Shalin hangs up her Pyroar's reins and relies entirely on her cat steed's instincts. As she makes a turn, her Pyroar stumbles on one of the spikes, skewering her front paw and slowing her down.[break][break]

With the exit to the long, winding chamber in sight, Shalin lets out a loud shriek. Both riders' lower legs are pinched between the wall and the lioness. Despite the great speed Kiara is carrying you and her at, it is apparent you will not make it.[break][break]

You feel like your legs are scraping against sand as the Pyroar heaves both of you over her head. You slide through the open passage with very little time to spare before the closing walls cover it up. Kiara herself is not so fortunate. This selfless act is her last; you can hear the sound of snapping bones and squishing flesh being crushed between the walls.[break][break]

Shalin is hyperventilating, shedding a waterfall of tears as you barely escape the Epoch Ruins' deadly deathtrap with your life intact. She wails in angst upon the realization that one of her most valuable, long-lasting friends is no more; a smear of blood and flesh on the ruins' walls.[break][break]

At the end of the hall is another KEY, though this one is larger, more ornate, and gleams a golden hue instead of silver. You decide snatching it is a good idea.[break][break]

You obtain the BOSS KEY! Now you can get into the chamber where the Boss lurks.[break][break]

After resting, you head upstairs to the underground pyramid's third level. You can see a faint natural light: a sign that you are close to the top! On the third floor's first chamber, you see four small statues depicting the hieroglyphs of four Unown: H, J, P, and T, in a clockwise order starting from the northwest. Covering the slab is a door with a riddle:[break][break]

"A MESSAGE FOR YE SEEKING[break]

RECALL THE ROADS WHENCE YE CAME,[break]

It felt like this dungeon crawl had gone on for months, by this point. What had gone on during prior floors was a mystery that Howard would never be able to crack, lest he hang himself from the world tree for nine days and nine nights.

"Shit."

Howard closed his eye and thought about the answer. Several Unowns in a clockwise fashion, huh? This was remarkably simple. Howard knew the answer like the back of his hand as he snapped his fingers.

"I have absolutely zero fucking clue what that means!"

She paces the room for a few minutes, just barely catching sight of some scrape marks surrounding the P-labeled pedestal. You notice she stops at that one far longer than the others, returning to you while humming in thought. "But what do the letters mean...?"[break][break]

"P." Howard nodded to himself thoughtfully, pleased with his brilliant deductive reasonings. "All that experience in the Ruins of Alph paid off."

His Aerodactyl peered at him, before snorting and curling up in his bed.

You push the UNOWN-P statue, the object giving way. The tablet blocking the north exit recedes into the wall, and a trapdoor opens in the northeast corner. Shalin walks toward the opening, lacking the energy she did at the bottom of the underground pyramid. With it is yet another SMALL KEY! With that and the BOSS KEY, no locks are stopping you now![break][break]

The chrome-colored key immediately gets used on a locked gate to the north. Beyond is a large chamber whose perimeter is covered in tall spikes similar to the ones you saw on the lower level - they would really sting if stepped on![break][break]

A scream from Shalin alerts you to the presence of a giant, red-eyed Crobat flying ahead, its AIR SLASH dislodging her from her steed and sending her rolling toward the flats of some of the spikes. Frantically shifting your eyes about to track the enormous flying rodent, you see it swooping in for a follow-up LEECH LIFE attack on the explorer![break][break]

Arceus above, what was Macro Cosmos feeding this Crobat? It looked like it feasted entirely on red meat, rage, and steroids. Regardless, it looked pissed, and Shalin's HP was low enough that they risked the run ending early.

There was no way in hell that he was dropping the ball now. It didn't matter if he had work in the morning, it was three in the morning, and he was likely wrecking his sleep schedule for the next month.

He was gonna kick this Crobat's ass.

After healing Shalin, of course. He didn't have a move that perfectly fit the bill, but he could definitely stall the Crobat, giving Shalin an opportunity to Roost and recover.

Admittedly, Howard wasn't good at the whole 'type chart' thing. Later down the line, he'd finally figure it out when Team Rocket forced him to fight on each of their horrid battlefields. At this point, no. He was sitting in bed with Aerodactyl slippers. Studying type combinations was for nerds and undergraduates.

But there were a dozen languages that all had a similar phrase: kill two birds with one stone.

There was only one bird here—a bat—yet Howard suspected that a fistful of rocks would do the trick. His Aerodactyl lunged forward, intending to stop the Crobat from bringing down Shalin with Stone Edge/

Your combination attack sends the Crobat careening into the north wall, sliding down its side and onto the spikes, which quickly skewer it. The battle is over. The perimeter spikes recede, and the shutters covering the doorways open.

On the fourth level, you see three red switches and an enclosure similar to the one you saw on the pyramid's lowest level. While your ROYAL BOOMERANG could get the job done, making a throw with the correct timing and angle to hit all three would be a task requiring patience and precision, as all three of them are moving around the enclosure at different angles and speeds.[break][break]

The archaeologist in Howard demanded that he study the patterns. A boomerang wasn't the coolest weapon in the world, but it still fit with his aesthetic.

After glaring at the patterns for a hot minute, the archaeologist nodded. He could work with this. He wasn't a gamer or anything like that, but Howard was still going to use his knowledge to get an edge in this clown festival of a game.

Arceus above, he hated Macro Cosmos.

Still, it was time to gamble. He threw the boomerang.

After carefully studying the pattern, you time your throw of the ROYAL BOOMERANG and let it fly. With precise control, you are able to manipulate its flight back to hit the back switch first, striking the other two as it returns to you.[break][break]

A giant trapdoor opens above you, much more light filtering in from above. You have reached the surface level, but one more obstacle stands between you and escape from the pyramid. The deep cry of a Tsaarena echoes throughout the two-story chamber. With a fire-type no longer needed to see, Shalin sends out her Beedrill and flies up to the top level, ferrying you there afterward.[break][break]

At the top level, you see an ornate, golden lock covering a large shutter, the Pokémon cry much louder than it was when you were on the bottom level. "Get ready to fight a grass-type Pokémon," Shalin warns. "When you're ready, open the lock. We'll battle as a team!" The Beedrill crawls away from the lock to allow you to open it when you're ready[break][break]

A Tsareena, eh? That'd be child's play. Shirley was a flying-type, and thus had the advantage over the boss of this dungeon. Flying would be more than enough to take it down, and as for Shirley's other type...

Who cared? What could a few blades of grass or a few kicks do to a boulder? Shirley would clear easily.

Still, Shalin's HP was remarkably low. If she took a few good hits, she'd be cooked. That meant that it'd be best to ensure she didn't keel over halfway through the fight.
