It's not enough to simply be strong. He had to win, to truly prove his strength, to show that he didn't need Navidson testing him again. To show that he didn't need anyone testing him. Hideo already knew his strength, and Uxie's was on clear display in this battle.

He had to hold out hope that Navidson wasn't like his parents. He had to hope Navidson wouldn't move the goalposts with such decisive evidence.

But the battle wasn't over yet. The sound of Z-energy came back, and Uxie immediately warned Hideo that another big attack was coming - one it couldn't simply defend against.

Uxie was a tough one - the toughest of the Lake Trio. But Hideo didn't know its limit - and he didn't want to find out. Few Pokemon could stay up after a single Z-move; two was out of the question.

Hideo had prepared Uxie to be flexible in its attacks - something for every occasion. But that flexibility meant a lack of specialization, and that Future Vision was the strongest attack in its arsenal.

It did not mean he was unprepared, though. Anything goes with this challenge (barring attacking the other trainer - not that he wanted to).

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small crystal - a Z-crystal. He'd never used one of these, and didn't actually know what he was supposed to do - but that was a problem that seemed to solve itself; the moment it got close to the Z-ring on his wrist, the energy began to flow.

And from the ring, it flowed towards Uxie.

"Can't hold anything back," Hideo declared, pointing towards his Pokemon. "Uxie! Go all out! Show'em that we never give up!"

Even though Uxie still possessed an Unseen Fist of its own, its attack was more in-line with its expected strengths: a psychic force, aiming to toss the Urushifu around into psychically-created walls, the Shattered Psyche z-move aiming to counteract the Urushifu's attack - and to strike it hard.

“You hear that, Shuwen?! He said they never give up! Ha! That’s real good, ain’t it? Kino, this bear and I are two peas in a pod. You’ll never meet a bigger pair of morons. You never give up? Well, we’re too dumb to quit!”[break][break]
A galaxy of colors explodes across the field. Psychic might sends Navy himself reeling, taking a few steps back for his own comfort. He feels the beginnings of a nosebleed, even at his distance. It’s hard to imagine the hell Shuwen endures, there at the center of the maelstrom. His bear stands strong. Clipped, chipped, caught in the swirl, he advances.[break][break]
Surrender isn’t in the warrior’s code. Not to legendaries, not to friends, not to villains. Victory is something Uxie has to rip fair and square, by exerting all that he has to give. Navy thrusts out a fist, mirroring Shuwen’s own forward motion. His bear roars in triumph…[break][break]
…only for the fist to stop a mere millimeter from Uxie. Only at this last moment, carried so close to the finish line by his momentum, does Shuwen finally pass out. Navy’s breath catches in his throat. For a split second, he thinks Shuwen has dead. His bear doesn’t move. As the mega evolution holds, he thinks, just for a moment, that he’s looking at a statue.[break][break]
Like all statues, it crumbles in time. Shuwen collapses. His breathing is haggard, but he breathes. Navy breathes his own sigh of relief, followed by a resounding cheer.[break][break]
“Hell YEAH! Damn, you two can fight! You really did give all that you have to give, huh?” Tossing caution to the wind, he walks up to Shuwen and Uxie, bending down to check on his Urshifu.[break][break]
“You got a lot of power, huh, little guy?” Whether the question is aimed to Hideo or Uxie, who can say?

While Navy saw the colors, Hideo could feel the energy radiating from their attacks. He raised an arm in front of his head, to keep the radiating energy from giving him a nosebleed; the last time he had a battle nearly this intense was when he had his Zeraora square off against Andrea Vaneau 's Buzzwole.

And yet, despite the type-advantage on its Z-move, despite being able to push back the G-max attack, the Urushifu was still going. And it was at that moment that terror actually began to seep into Hideo's heart; just how tough was that Pokemon?!

And Hideo wasn't the only one scared; Hideo could feel the mental urgings from Uxie to do something - the first time he'd ever gotten a sense of panic from Uxie. And what really made Hideo begin to sweat was that he didn't have anything else: that Z-crystal was the one trump-card he had brought with him.

The only hint of panic on Uxie's face was the sweat beating on its oversized head, and its mouth slightly opened. It even moved back as the fist got close to its face - even when it stopped.

Hideo could still feel his heart racing, even as Uxie confirmed that they'd won, even as he heard the Urushifu hit the ground. He approached Uxie and the Urushifu, Uxie waddling over towards Hideo and reaching up to him. The boy lifted up the small legendary, hearing its labored breaths.

"You did good, Uxie," he said, hearing its little "ho…ho…ho" breaths.

He faced towards Navidson, who was congratulating his victory. "Yeah…don't think I've had Uxie fight like that…well, ever." He'd never seen Uxie go all-out before. And as impressive as its power was, even with type-advantage on its side, it was a narrow victory.

And Uxie getting hurt resurfaced some uncomfortable memories of the time Uxie was attacked during Necrozma's arrival.

But it was a victory nonetheless. "Little guy really does have a lot of power, huh?"

Uxie was probably gonna want a lot of cheese snacks after this one.

"So…we, uh, done with the test, Navy?" That had to prove they had the strength to handle themselves…right?

“Yeah,” Navy recalls Shuwen into a pokeball, “you have.” There’s somber resignation in his words. After a fight like that, he can’t say Hideo or Uxie aren’t cut out for this. Hearing something is one thing, seeing it with your own eyes is another.[break][break]
“And damn if I don’t think I need your help, too.” Just as much as Hideo and Eris need his. All of them are cast into this fight, fumbling in the dark. Young or old, rich or poor, they’re all struggling just to keep their head above water.[break][break]
“There’s a world of trouble down in Dewford. I know you’ve got your hands full in Littleroot, but whenever you’ve got time…” While he talks, he roots around in his jacket. Eventually, he finds what he needs. Holding out his hand, he offers a valor badge to Hideo and Uxie. Both of them have more than earned the right to bear the badge.[break][break]
“…hope you’ll help me out. I’ll have your back, too. With Azelf, and the mecha kingdom if it gets too out of control.” He never breaks his word. Not even if death gets in the way.[break][break]
“So…what now?”

"Oh, uh…" It took him a moment to think of what to say. He'd expected more resistance, or some kind of goalpost-moving, like he'd gotten from his parents so many times before. If a request for help with a city wasn't enough of a sign that his strength was proven, he'd be shocked.

"Sure. I could help out." Even if he hadn't been friends with Navidson, he was still willing to help out another Gym Leader. "Always willing to help in any way I can. Just let me know what you want help with."

Hideo didn't doubt that Navidson was a strong guy, nor that he would stomp out any problems that he found; if he had to ask for help with something like this, it must've been a pretty serious issue - or something that power alone wasn't enough for.

Whatever the case, Hideo calmly took the badge. Not counting his own badge, this did mean he had the 8 badges he'd left home for in the first place, and enough traditional badges for the Champion Assessment…but that wasn't something he had on his mind for now.

As for what to do now?

"...think we should find where Eris went off to. Don't think it's a good idea to leave her behind in another region."
