The slide of the training rooms doors was familiar. tempest hadn't had as much time to come down here the last few weeks as he would have liked; just for his own workouts and little else. A shame, since this had been his main haunt for years. Now, when not on missions, he was up in the labs throwing ideas at walls and hoping they stuck.[break][break]

"Mr. Harcourt!" Instead of leisure or fitness, Tempest was here on business.[break][break]

The clip board in hand, and chewed-tip ink-pen ready, Temp had taken his time to try and track down the Beast before him.[break][break]

"I'm here to ask you some questions."

Zev was in the middle of a pull-up when a familiar voice called out his name. He finished the motion, then dropped from the bar before turning to confirm it was who he thought it was. And sure enough, Tempest Quinn stood there with a clipboard and pen in hand.[break][break]

"What questions?" Zev asked. His voice carried no hint of suspicion, just a fleeting curiosity.[break][break]

Reaching down, he picked up a towel to wipe the sweat from his face. Exercising his body was a routine part of his daily life, but it felt strange to do now. He found the same to be true of other normal functions, like sleeping and eating.[break][break]

His human body demanded them, even required them. But food, sleep, exercise—they all seemed to belong to a different species altogether. As if he were mimicking the acts to blend in.

Tempest did give a quick glance of Zev Harcourt as he worked out. Fleeting. He had already ordered and was very happy with his meal but other plate's could still be appreciated.[break][break]

But that wasn't why Temp was here, so he cleared his throat and tried his best to look official. With his dopey smile it didn't stick.[break][break]

"I'm doing some research for the Labs. About your Avatarship." 'Avatarship' didn't feel like the most correct term, but it was the closest enough one that Tempest had for Zev's situation. Not that he knew too much about it, just what his previous interview with Choi had told him as long with the few internal logs he had access to.

Team Rocket's study of its own Avatars was not news, and it came as no surprise that Zev's Avatarship was, perhaps, the most interesting of them all. Tempest was not the first person to ask him about it.[break][break]

Still, he sighed. He'd been hoping for some peace and quiet.[break][break]

"Ask your questions," Zev acquiesced. He tossed his towel back into his duffel bag and took a long, thirst-quenching drink from his water bottle.

"Thank you." While it hadn't exactly been a request, Tempest knew to be polite. There was no reason to make unneeded enemies in Rocket. The whole ordeal with mint frost still stung to think about too long.[break][break]

The pen clicked and Tempest scribbled down a few details at the top of his paper, noting the time among other factors before he started in on hounding Zev Harcourt.[break][break]

"A few of the questions you've answered before, but I'd like to ask you myself. We can do those first and save the more esoteric ones." Tempest pronounces 'esoteric' correctly this time but it still has a slightly too-practiced slide as it passes his tongue.[break][break]

"Could you please give a brief recap of how you obtained your powers? Specifically, could you focus more on how it felt. Physical, mental, emotional- all important."

Zev raised an eyebrow. He could not actually remember answering these questions before; Cillian Quinn's report had been entirely factual, especially considering he hadn't borne witness to Zev's original transformation.[break][break]

"When Beast Delarosa removed Necrozma's shards from Chu-e Choi's body, I received them instead," the hitman explained, his tone detached, clinical. "It felt fine. Nothing was really different."[break][break]

It was the same lie he'd told Cillian. And considering all that he had truly felt and experienced during his recent trip to Ultra Space, it was an even bigger lie now.[break][break]

Zev wondered, briefly, if Tempest knew about that trip. He'd sent the report only to the upper brass, but Tempest was married to Cillian, and Zev knew well that marriage had its perks.

If no one had asked any of these questions to Zev Harcourt, Tempest would be very surprised. And then confused on to how the science department had been so willing to overlook such valuable information. In the end, he was ignorant of this and just making his own assumptions.[break][break]

"No pain or euphoria?" Hedged. Tempest flipped through a few of the papers as if checking something, then scribbled down his notes with an interested hum.[break][break]

Tempest was ignorant of the little adventure that Zev had been on as well, at least for now. In a couple day's time, he would have the clearance to that file. Cillian Quinn didn't share information like that with him. It was safer for them both that way.[break][break]

"In your own words, could you tell what your powers are? When you use your powers, how does it feel? Same criteria as before." Glancing back up to meet the other's eyes, Tempest gave a clinical smile.

Zev tilted his head, as if in thought.[break][break]

"Some pain," he conceded, because if Tempest wound up asking bryan delarosa about that night, the other Beast would likely remember how Zev had screamed in agony.[break][break]

How trivial the memory of it now seemed, compared to his more recent experience.[break][break]

Zev flexed his hand, and crystals emerged in a rippling wave along the whole length of his bare arm.[break][break]

"I can cover myself in the crystals stored in my body. They're indestructible, and I can turn them into various shapes." Blades, spikes, tendrils, claws. "There's a slight itch when they come out, but no pain."[break][break]

Some of the crystals receded back into his body, but not all of them. Ever since his encounter with Necrozma, it felt wrong to hide them so much.[break][break]

"I can put out lights that are near me." Zev's gaze flickered briefly to the ceiling lights above them. "Artificial ones. Fire. Electricity. The natural light of Tera Crystals, to a degree, and from Z-moves too."[break][break]

He paused to consider how to answer the other part of Tempest's question. "They feel warm. The same kind of warmth you feel when you eat soup or drink coffee, I suppose."[break][break]

He fell silent then.[break][break]

No one needed to know about the rest. Not yet.

"I wonder if it would have the same effect on Power Spots." From the Galar Memory, it had seemed there was some connection between Necrozma and Eternatus. A feeding ground? A mating dance? There wasn't enough information to parse out a proper guess.[break][break]

"Your case is one of the more unique ones." Tilting his head, Tempest eyed the shiny black crystal with some curiosity as it writhed on Zev Harcourt's flesh. "I'm not sure how to classify your bond with Necrozma. It falls very outside of 'typical' Avatar framework."[break][break]

Tempest tapped his pen on the clipboard, suddenly unhappy with his questions.[break][break]

Well, no sense in not trying to push through it.[break][break]

"Would you say your bond is still parasitic? I spoke with it's last host and the answers were..." Tempest screwed his face up in something like disgust as he trailed off.[break][break]

"Does it strain or effect your bond to use your powers? Or feel different when you are and aren't using them?"

Zev turned over Tempest's voiced musing in his head. The last time he had drawn close to a power spot, down in the caverns of the island on Route 105, he had grown ravenous.[break][break]

For the energy there, and for the battle his patron had raged over millennia against Eternatus.[break][break]

"It's worth testing," Zev said at length, "but not on one of our own power spots. One out in the wild, or if possible, one of the League's."[break][break]

Because he'd be surprised if the League didn't have their own by now.[break][break]

"I'm not a host," he said when the question arose, a new iciness in his voice that hadn't been there before. "And it's not a parasite."[break][break]

"I don't have the words for it."[break][break]

The scratching of ink to paper paused for a moment, Temp's eyes flicking up to meet Zev Harcourt's once again. Curiosity hangs in his eyes, flaming hot. A hunger in them for more.[break][break]

But Tempest just gives another soft, placid smile and tilts his head.[break][break]

"A lot of the Power Spots here in Sootopolis are crusted over with Tera Crystals." He had been studying them with oscar clayton. "Unless we can break them, I'm not sure we can use them."[break][break]

Tempest's hand is still hovering over the paper.[break][break]

"Have you, at any point, been unable to use your powers? Others have reported things like Sygna suits, certain Distortions, and presumed Legendary pokemon can nullify the energy in your body for a short time. If you've experienced that, what did it feel like?" Empty? sits on the end of his tongue. Yet it's wipes away on the back of sharp teeth.

Zev caught the flicker of hunger in Tempest's eyes and did not look away. He stared back the frosty aloofness for which he was known, silently daring Tempest to push the issue.[break][break]

He did not. Gone was the fire, replaced by a placid geniality.[break][break]

The thought of being deprived of his powers disgusted Zev. He'd been a capable man before them, and he had no doubt he could be one if, for whatever reason, he lost them.[break][break]

No, what sickened him was an existential matter. The crystals were his flesh as much as his flesh was. He fed off light as much as food. And he knew the tremendous trauma associated with the soul being sundered, made to be something it was not.[break][break]

Never again.[break][break]

"No. That's never happened to me."

"Would you say that Avatarship was something you actively sought out? Not from Necrozma, but in general."[break][break]

For the moment, sharp eyes move away from Zev Harcourt. Flick through the mess of papers on the clipboard. Tempest's chicken scratch writing visible for a moment, other names and gathered information in white and blue on pages. A quick snatch of various words; 'Sygna', 'Crystabloom', 'Serum'. All wiped away quick when the paper is turned back over in his hands.

Tempest's next question evoked memories of a conversation with Naomi Sato from earlier that year. She had asked if Zev would be willing to serve a Pokémon's goals, in the same way other Avatars served their patrons'.[break][break]

He had been adamant in his answer: that Pokémon served his goals, not the other way around. In fact, the only relationship he was willing to entertain was a contract of mutual benefit.[break][break]

It was how he described his work with Team Rocket.[break][break]

"No," Zev said. "The sort of relationship common to Avatarship never appealed to me."
