The momentum was being thrown off. A pressure point was found. From here, it was a matter of pressing down upon it. Smelling blood, he goes for the throat. There is no malice, nor sadistic delight, merely a desire to educate and elevate. If this is where she wants to be, he can’t show mercy. Rocket won’t. Rocket never will.[break][break]
If an ounce of malice today keeps her body off a morgue slab tomorrow, he’ll do whatever he has to do. He’s seen enough truth-seekers and idealists alike die in this war. Reaching down, he grabs up a pokeball in each hand.[break][break]
One fires a return signal, pulling Sol away. Infinity energy blasts away, leaving him nothing but a normal, weakened Charizard. In his place comes Grendel, a Dragonite that is far friendlier than its name would imply. Flying out onto the battlefield, he sees a Pokemon surfing electric waves.[break][break]
“Grendel!” Navy barks as Hattori tries to recompose himself. “Clear it!” Nodding, ice seems to gather around the dragon. He pivots around the field, a dazzling ice spinner. He looks less a dragon and more a ballerina, colliding into Daikenki in the process.[break][break]
Nor is he alone. Hattori rights himself, takes careful aim, and tosses out a barrage of water shuriken at Nimbus. Though he has but one eye, his aim remains sharp.[break][break]
“Remember,” Navy says over the mosh pit, “Rocket don’t play fair. Far from it. They’ll pull out every trick in the book.”

Great Tusk lays there taking a little dirt nap. Charizard is recalled and switched with Dragonite, who clears the terrain and slams into Samurott with an ice spinner. Greninja uses water shuriken on Nimbus after getting a killer headache from that disarming voice.

Nothing stopped, the battle waged on, and it was everything that Yuina could do to keep track of everything going on. Things were shaking up, the CHARIZARD was returned, and Nimbus was on his last legs after rushing away from the GRENINJA on the field, the GREAT TUSK was still idle but couldn't be counted out yet... It was all happening so fast, it was getting harder to keep tabs on. One step at a time...[break][break]
"Daikenki, fall back," Yuina called, the water type wasn't down for the count yet, but she needed to make sure if she needed him, that he could still do something if it came down to it. He could keep an eye on the GREAT TUSK for now, to make sure if it got up again they could finish it. Daikenki rushed back to Yuina, finding the SNEASEL sneaking up on her! The Samurott hissed, raising a seamitar to strike just as Navy released another Pokemon onto the field to replace the CHARIZARD that was returned...[break][break]
She would recognize one of those yellow dragons anywhere, and she could hardly do anything but watch as it rushed onto the field and broke down Nimbus' electrical field, and then the GRENINJA struck with its devastating flury of shurikens... All at once, Nimbus was down and being returned, she spun around and found Daikenki at odds with the SNEASEL that had unbeknownst to her nearly reached her from behind, and she was faced with the DRAGONITE, trying not to let Amor Rose's lasting efforts on tearing her apart creep back into her thoughts...[break][break]
"Okay... Okay... I can do this...," Yuina tried to focus, Navy was right, Rocket wouldn't stop for anything, she already knew... And he was just driving the point home, she likely would have lost one or two of her Pokemon if Daikenki hadn't spotted the SNEASEL, and she couldn't let herself get wrapped up in facing a Pokemon that also belonged to someone she loathed to think of crossing again...[break][break]
Taking out two more Pokeballs to keep up in the fight, Yuina released Rasza and Nyla, it was her turn to bring burning daylight onto the field. Tapping at the gemstone she too carried, Rasza took on the same form that Navy's had, turning the tides for her own power. Yuina and Rasza both had their sights set on the DRAGONITE...[break][break]
"Go," Yuina called, urging her two Pokemon forward, Rasza rose into the air and released a Dragon Pulse for the DRAGONITE, and Nyla rushed across the field with bared fangs and claws, ready to meet the GRENINJA in combat with a Brick Break.

He doesn’t think less of her for trying to psyche herself up. When you’re in a bad way, that’s all you can do. Sometimes, a person just needs to believe in themselves, if for no other reason than to get through the day.[break][break]
Of course, he’s not planning on making this any easier for her. His attention first turns to Grendel, who’s facing down a mega evolved Pokemon firing a dragon pulse their way. Grendel inclines his head towards Navy, waiting for instructions.[break][break]
“Full speed ahead.” He swears he hears Grendel laugh. Maybe the dragon is questioning why he expected anything different. Grendel seems to disappear, moving with extreme speed across the battlefield. Curiously, he doesn’t appear to be going on the offensive. Instead, he’s killing time, using that ridiculous speed to dodge around the Charizard. One moment, he’s on the ground. The next, he’s soaring through the air.[break][break]
He does so love watching dragons dance.[break][break]
Turning his eyes down to the ground, he looks at Daikenki, caught between Ellie and Ballbreaker. His Great Tusk seems to be struggling to get up. If he’s not recalled soon, he’ll keep going until he sustains some major injury. Navy wonders if, in the dream world where Great Tusks roam, there is no need for survival instincts. Maybe he’s simply stubborn. They have that in common.[break][break]
“Keep him busy, Ball.” Navy orders. If that’s how his Great Tusk wants to play things, so be it. Ballbreaker roars at the Samurott, a taunt accentuated by fighting spirit. It is a challenge that must be answered.[break][break]
It makes Ellie feel confident enough to advance on Yuina, the Sneasel honing her claws menacingly. Navy knows she won’t really attack. She’s well trained. The question, he supposes, is if Yuina herself knows that.[break][break]
And at last, he turns his attention on Hattori. Hattori performs as well as expected. Far more used to warfare than the other Pokemon on his team, the Greninja has seemingly vanished. In his place stands a substitute struck by Nyla’s claws.

Resetting the playing field only did so much, it only meant really that Yuina had another set of things and more to keep track of as things progressed... She herself was faced with the hissing Sneasel (was it? It looked similar to Nyla but not...) as it advanced on her, and while she could assume, hope, that she wasn't in any real danger given the circumstances of the battle, that didn't mean that she couldn't treat the threat seriously.[break][break]
More and more of her memories from Hisui, her survival, had started to come back to her given time from that powerful distortion beneath the swamps of Fortree, and one thing that she knew for certain was that so long as she had Daikenki, she could be prepared.[break]
"Daikenki, ha, kōgeki," Yuina spoke, a series of short, single word commands, and in spite of her still shotty pronounciation at still having to practice the old language, her partner knew her words. As to be expected, the GREAT TUSK was not done in the fight, and as the water type barked and rushed to advance on the paradox before it had the chance to do more damage, Daikenki drew both seamitars, one for himself and the other he threw to Yuina at her word.[break][break]
Catching the sword in her grasp, Yuina turned again and squared the blade with the Sneasel, prepared now for the encounter if it came down to that. Daikenki took his other seamitar in hand and as he still wore his glittering blue Water Tera armor, he rushed to meet the GREAT TUSK'S Taunt, its final challenge and struck with Razor Shell.[break][break]
Faced with the DRAGONITE, her Dragon Pulse misses the target as it disappears in flash of speed, much the same as their adversary's dragon was capable of doing... Rasza huffed, smoke pluming around her muzzle as she took in the energy of the sun above her, she was capable of great speeds in this form too, and would do her best to match. Pushing with her wings, Rasza rushed into the air to fly after the racing dragon, opening her maw and releasing a torrent of Fire Spin that spread through the air in an attempt to catch the dragon in her flames.[break][break]
Being met with nothing more than a copy as Nyla struck with her claws, the poison type hissed with bared fangs as she glanced around with sharp eyes. Using the rocky ground beneath her, the Sneasler struck her claws for Hone Claws, biding her strength, and sharpening her senses as her ears flicked at any sound of movement. Should her foe show itself, she was poised to strike with poison laden claws, for a Dire Claw strike.

Battles rage across the sky and earth. Arms folded, the sheriff simply observes. His Pokemon hold their own for now, save Ballbreaker.[break][break]
Hattori is no fool. From the shadows, he sees that his foe means to attack him, should he draw close. The simple answer is to not get close. Emerging near Navy, he raises a hand. Psychic power forms around Nyla, motes of extrasensory power. With the closing of his hand, the motes crash into her. The innate power of the Greninja line activates, his protean power making the attack deadlier still.[break][break]
Above, Grendel dances around Rasza. Theirs is a battle of ice and fire. The fire spin is met by an ice spin, ice shooting from the orange dragon’s maw. The ice begins to melt, especially in the intense heat of the Charizard’s sunlight. Grendel is left scorched, but he isn’t out of this fight. Not by a long shot. This calculating beast wonders how much longer the opposition’s power will hold out.[break][break]
Which leads, naturally, to the two fights that just might prove dire. Ellie is a beast of a dark nature. Trained though she is, civilized and raised from an egg, she spies a chance for battle and mayhem. Judging by how she edges closer to Yuina, lashing out with a playful claw, it seems like she is eager to play with her food.[break][break]
“Tera energy, z-moves, mega evolutions...” Talking out loud, loud enough where she can hear, isn't fair. There's a vicious Pokemon hot on her heels. All’s fair in war.[break][break]
“Back when this war began, couldn't do any of that. Just regular old Pokemon battles.” As Ballbreaker rolls into a headlong charge, he disappears in a flash of red light. The pokeball begins to buck, shake, and threaten to explode in Navy’s hands.[break][break]
“These paradox pokemon, they’re, uh, pretty crazy, too. Lots of Pokemon back off before they get themselves killed, but those guys don’t care if you mess ‘em up. Makes ‘em strong.”[break][break]
Daikenki hits empty air, but is left free to engage the rest of the battlefield as his trainer sees fit.

Things continue to unfold as the various Pokemon and duals across the battlefield continue, including Yuina in her own crosshairs.[break]
While Nyla was ready to strike, claws poised and laced with poison that was sure to lay a potent blow, the Sneasler was ill prepared for the power of the Extrasensory that overtook her. The Psychic type attack was too much, plus its aided power by the GRENINJA'S keen abilities, and the Sneasler hissed as she tried to lash out against the attack that struck her, but to no avail. The poison type couldn't hold up, and she fell to the onslaught, but as Daikenki was left with no target when the GREAT TUSK was withdrawn, he would have another opponent to lock on to.[break][break]
Up above, Rasza watched as her flames washed over the yellow dragon's scales, but the attack was far from subduing as the DRAGONITE tried to meet the ferocity with an icy breath. The sun beat down above them, empowering her fury, and Rasza took the DRAGONITE'S calculating pause as a chance to release another Dragon Pulse to try and deal actual damage in the intense sky fight.[break][break]
Behind her, her back faced to Navy, he spoke of the battles he'd seen before, how different things were... Yuina was focused though on her own opponent as the tides had turned and she was faced with one of his Pokemon. In a sense, now with her coming memories, she wasn't unfamiliar with the concept of facing a Pokemon herself, as perhaps an extension of her Pokemon. After all, Hisui was a feral, harsh environment, the Pokemon back then didn't care for the difference between a Pokemon or a Human adversary...[break]
The SNEASEL lashed forward with a claw, and Yuina held fast to the seamitar she wielded and met the claw in a clash, pushing back a bit with the blade.[break][break]
As Daikenki is left without a target, when Nyla hisses at being bested by the GRENINJA, the Samurott rushes with his blade towards the frog. His fangs are bared, panting, he's put in a lot of effort in the fight, but if he can keep going, he's willing to as he lunges with a Razor Shell to take over the fight for Nyla.

Every theater of this battle crests towards a crescendo. Hattori, once terrified of his own shadow, raises a watery kunai in preparation for a clash with the great dark shogun Daikenki. Grendel howls as his scales absorb a painful blow. Ellie dances with Yuina.[break][break]
“Alright, I think we’re done here.”[break][break]
“Mmm…?” Hattori pivots his head towards Navy, his focus thrown off. It proves to be an error, as Daikenki’s blow sends him flying back. His other Pokemon back off with grace, although Grendel stays on guard. Dragons are prideful beasts, and an undecided battle does not sit well with him.[break][break]
“I’ll give you this, you got a good head on your shoulders.” Which is more than he can say about himself. Ellie’s recalled in a stream of red light. Grendel begins a slow descent down. Tormund and Jessica run back onto the field, cheering for Yuina. Slowly, the tension building in the crowd disappears. In its place, they too cheer for Yuina and their sheriff.[break][break]
“Know it’s not your first time using any of these things, but you understand ‘em better than most trainers who come through my gym. You’re also way more comfortable with Pokemon attackin’ you. That’s a plus. Rocket likes to do that.” His words are clinical. Navy runs a hand through his back, arms folded, trying to give her a fair assessment.[break][break]
“What do you think you need to work on?”

All at once, as every path the battle had laid out came to a blooming crescendo, as Navy called out, everything came to a sudden halt. Rasza's dragon pulse disippated after making contact with the Dragonite's scales, and Daikenki barked as his blow made contact with the Greninja, an apology of sorts... He didn't mean to strike an opponent who was distracted like that... Yuina clashed blade to claw with the Sneasel that had nearly swiped her Pokeballs before, but everything fell back into the calm of the seaside just as easily as the battle had exploded.[break]
It was over, and Yuina looked out to the calls and cheers of the onlookers... Commending the ferocity of the battle.[break][break]
Yuina glanced around, meeting the gaze of both Daikenki and Rasza, and while the Samurott's tera energy faded and Rasza's form settled back from her mega evolution, the two Pokemon came back towards her. Navy began his assessement...[break][break]
For everything that Yuina was tumbling through mentally, she looked up to Navy as he spoke, drawing in his words. She wasn't going to take this as a compliment, nothing that he said was going to balloon out of context to think she was free of error, but... She could at least glean a bit of confidence, he was a gym leader after all, and he wouldn't tell her anything that he wasn't serious about. They'd both been honest with each other right from the start... Well... Mostly...[break][break]
"For better or for worse, I spent all that time on that island before coming here... If my first experiences battling were in a more controlled and safe environment... I probably wouldn't be here," Yuina returned, she did screw up a lot, and she made a lot of terrible decisions while out on that island, facing some impossible adversaries, but knowing that each situation was life or death... She had to figure out all of the things that she just displayed to Navy quickly, or else she very well wouldn't be there standing with him.[break][break]
His question hung in the air for a moment, Yuina was truly thinking it over... And her eyes glanced over the the Dragonite that had come down from the air... Maybe it wasn't the direction he was going in, but... She knew she had things she needed to work on...[break][break]
"How... How do you go into the next situation, knowing that you'll face the same people who have already tried to kill you...," her question was quiet, but she was serious in her tone... She knew they were out there, they would be there again at the next road block... What was she supposed to do, knowing that they would likely take a chance at her life again?

When she asks her question, he again looks to the sea. Grendel slowly drifts down to hang by his side, Hattori clinging to his shadow. All his warriors come home to roost while Yuina stumps him with one question.[break][break]
There’s so many answers he could give. So many good-natured lies. So many lines he could feed her, like every government since the dawn of time has fed their soldiers.[break][break]
Keep people safe. Fight for them. You must. It’s your duty. What choice do we have?[break][break]
They’re all just platitudes, reasons ascribed after the fact. Too often, they’re paired with another, darker platitude.[break][break]
Here lies so and so, they fought for the people. May John Doe rest well, he did his duty.[break][break]
She deserves better than that. He is many things, but he can’t be a liar.[break][break]
“Not my place to tell you that.” He finally meets her eyes again. His voice is soft, older. “The last time I fought for the League, I died. The time before that, I spent twenty years in Galar. Had a family. Gave it up so we could all come back, so some heroes could run away and lick their wounds when—” He stops himself. This is not about him.[break][break]
“If you can’t think of a reason to risk your life…don’t. Don’t die for the League, Yuina. Too many martyrs already. There’s people who’d care if you died. Looking at one right now.” His eyes pivot to Daikenki. Pokemon love their trainers. They are, by and large, loving creatures. When they fight or kill, it is to survive. Hatred, true hatred, is humanity’s domain.[break][break]
“Find something you care about more than your life. If you can’t…no shame in that. Not going to sell you a line of croc. All I can do is help you get ready. Run drills. Do everything in my power to make sure them that care about you get to see you again.” He hopes that helps. There’s a reason Dahlia Goode isn’t running to put him in front of the camera.

Asking her question, Yuina knew she could already expect honesty from Navy as it lofted around them for only a moment. He was studious, considering his words, and then... He just let it lose. He was being entirely honest about his feelings on the matter, in a way that Yuina knew wasn't meant for anyone other than someone who garnered his favor, this truth...[break]
None of what he laid out in the open was encouraging, this would make any regular starry eyed newbie turn back and take that final chance to have their normal life... And that's likely what he intended, though... Had he intended to give her so much of himself in that moment? Yuina almost wished that she had the courage to be the same level of honest with him...[break][break]
Navy spoke of the lives he'd lost, both physically and otherwise, and she couldn't help but share in his pain... But... In a way, Yuina almost envied him... He knew what he lost, he knew the lives that he lived before, and even in death, he didn't lose his friends, his knowledge, he didn't lose his entire sense of self... Jarring as it may be to be at death's door and have the chance to turn around and walk away before knocking.... Why did he get to continue living the same life that he did, when she was now at her third life, with no way to put her other two together.... One of which she still had no recollection of...[break]
That question burned her, charring a hole through her that only got bigger every day... Why...?[break][break]
Yuina felt herself succumbing to an anger that she had no where to direct, no where to put it... It wasn't Navy's fault in spite of how much she believed their situations to be unfair... She had to swallow that anger for now... Instead, he finished his truth, he was very plain about what he said, no sugar coating the fact that if she couldn't understand why she was out here doing any of this in the first place, no good was going to come of it... So she wondered...[break][break]
"What is that for you...? The thing that you care about, more than your own life," she didn't know if he would answer, she couldn't blame him if he didn't... But if he spoke so freely about how no one should put their life on the line without a good reason for it... What was his?

His answer is apparent in where his eyes wander. The crowd disperses as the excitement dies down, but the people of Dewford are still present. Each of them is their own person, going about their own life. What is doubtless a distant statistic to someone in League HQ is a flesh and blood being.[break][break]
“These people don’t know what an Eternatus is. If you asked around, most of ‘em wouldn’t be able to properly explain what a Megalopolin or a Nihilego is, either. They don’t know anything about Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina except what the good book tells them.”[break][break]
He turns back to look at her, and his eyes are gunmetal once more. They’re possessed of a mad, fierce desire to protect. Speaking about these people kindles a fire in him that not even death can truly douse.[break][break]
“All the stuff that happens in Hoenn isn’t their fault, and it shouldn’t be their problem. There’s no justice in the world for people like them, who can’t stand up for themselves. So, I fight for ‘em. I’ll keep fighting Cillian, or Bryan, or whoever. I’ll keep fighting until a smarter person can end this war. Really end it.” As it always does, some part of him wonders who it will be. Maybe Yuina herself. Maybe someone nobody knows anything about, yet to step onto the stage.[break][break]
“Just wanting to live’s enough for most people. Arceus knows you don’t have a choice but to fight whenever a legendary decides to go on a rampage.” Reflexively, he glances at the sea. By the grace of Arceus, Kyogre doesn’t decide to surface and accentuate the point.

If there was a better reason to be out on the front lines and trying to do the things that the league was involved in... Yuina couldn't think of a better one, not right now. Everything that she had done up to this point was selfish, she knew it, she'd already admitted to it, she was a poor representation of what Ollie saw in her... Which was why she was here in the first place...[break][break]
Maybe it wasn't her reason, she didn't know what it truly would be yet, but in any case, Navy raised a good point. Whether it was her actual purpose or not, being one more stone in the wall between all of these regular ordinary people who wanted to do nothing more than have a regular, ordinary life, and had every right to be able to do that... There should be people out there that they could count on, to know that their chance for a regular life was out there, in the people willing to protect and fight for them.[break]
She could do that? It was a better reason than some self serving feeling of atonement that she couldn't identify, and if that moment ever came, if she understood why she felt the way that she did, then that would only give her more cause to be out in the fight. Yuina knew that she couldn't lead a regular, ordinary life, she was in too deep now and couldn't spend the rest of that life in a lie, like she already was.[break][break]
"There's still a lot of things I'm figuring out right now, a lot of things I'm learning about this conflict... But you're right. Maybe it's not my reason forever, I don't know if my fight will always be in defending the people who just... Live here. But, it's a good leg to stand on, knowing that I'm not backing out of any of this now," Yuina returned, but in that moment, it did already feel like more than that. She had friends now, who were in the same fight as her, and while they may all have different reasons for doing what they were doing, they had one common reason... They were working together, to make the region, the world even, a better place for each other, so they could all continue to be friends and have their lives, their futures... That felt like a good reason too...[break][break]
"I have one more question... But I don't know how to ask it... In a way that makes it easy to ask...," Yuina said after a moment of thinking to herself... If anyone was going to be straight with her about how to handle the things that were going on, already she trusted Navy. She needed a real, perhaps even difficult answer.[break]
"One of those rockets made me believe that I was responsible for their life, in a moment where I was getting hurt... I could have let them go, I could have let them fall, but I couldn't... I didn't want to make that choice, but my sacrifice was for nothing. They left me bleeding, flying away on another one of their Pokemon like nothing happened and... I don't know if that's naivety or mercy... And if I did the right thing..."
