local rangers had noted a cave-in as a result of hoenn's new weather. the snow was not really something that most civilians were prepared for, which meant that they were exploring places that they shouldn't. they really should send out a news bulletin, ollie thought, warning people of the recent cave-ins.

[break][break] rocks tumbled underneath mountain boots as he landed just outside lavaridge town, sending a pair of nearby turtle doves to take flight.

[break][break] the area was a little less smoky now, thanks to the project collaboration with freya morningstar, but now snow turned to be a problem. though the city's natural warmth still protected it, there was a radius outside of it that was suffering from hoenn's new winters.

[break][break] he glanced at his watch.

[break][break] Remiel Calcifet should be showing up soon, and princelings didn't like to be late.

"There you are," A familiar voice from the ridge above calls out. Should ollie morales turn to see, he would find its source standing there at the edge: Remiel Calcifet beside a serious CERULEDGE. "Punctual as always. Come up here. You won't believe what I've found." The archaeologist smiles, turning to lead the way.[break][break]

After squeezing through a crevice in the avalanche of rock and snow, Remiel guides them into the cave with his Ceruledge's fiery illumination lighting the way forward. They pass ancient drawings on the walls as they proceed: depictions of larger than usual Pokémon terrorizing communities of people. Perhaps realizing Ollie might think this was their point for being here, the royal smiles.[break][break]

"That's not what I was talking about," He assures his companion. "But it's nice art, isn't it?"[break][break]

[break] [break] ollie's face brightened as he jogged the rest of the way up the path, curiosity lighting his eyes once he arrived and the other ranger noted that he had something to show him.

[break][break] to be honest, ollie was curious to how the other was doing. it felt like it had been a long time since they'd talked to each other and especially with the recent gossip surrounding the amnesty program — or more specifically, how the defectors felt about it — he'd been hoping to get the inside scoop.

[break][break] but more than that, he enjoyed remiel's company.

[break][break] it's a bit of a tight squeeze as he'd led into the crevice. it's a little bit like a snorlax trying to squeeze into a mareep-sized hole. after all, ollie was a pretty broad-shouldered guy. he managed, though, squeezing behind archeologist and widening his eyes at the sight of ancient drawings on the wall.

[break][break] "woah! nice doesn't even begin to cut it. what are these drawings about?"

[break][break] ollie wasn't a historian. he assumed that was what people like Remiel Calcifet or howard slayte were for.

Having seen such displays of ancient art frequently in his line of work, Remiel might have walked straight past them otherwise. When he realizes ollie morales might not be as exposed to such things, however, he stops. Donning a smile, he gestures for Catalina to come closer so that her firelight may illuminate the cave wall better.[break][break]

"These are depictions of ALPHA POKEMON," The archaeologist says, tracing his finger along the edge of a painted GARCHOMP that seemed to be splitting the earth between an entire village. "In ancient times, some Pokémon used to grow far larger than they do today. And they were said to be much more wild and territorial." He adds, turning to gauge the HEAD RANGER's expression.[break][break]

"Despite that, humans and Pokémon eventually learned to coexist with each other. And, though we still see them now and again, nature's need for ALPHAS largely became a phenomenon of antiquity. I don't suppose you've ever come across one here in HOENN, have you?"[break][break]

[break][break] The Head Ranger tilts his head. He's not normally much for history books or tales. Academia was something better suited to Eva Morales or GIDEON GRAVES — but that didn't mean that Ollie couldn't appreciate it from afar.

[break][break] He shakes his head.

[break][break] "Nope, never seen one." He thinks about the various pokemon that he'd seen in his lifetime. There may have been a Vespiquen swarm he'd helped clear once near willow atkins's family farm, but nothing too crazy.

[break][break] "Though, it's kinda like those Dynamax pokemon, right? Have you had the chance to see them before?"

There was a hint of surprise in Remiel's eyes upon learning Ollie had never come across an alpha before. One would assume a HEAD RANGER was more likely to come across one than anyone else. Then again, he recalled the conversation they had shared back at the FUNTASIA CARNIVAL. The position of leadership that had been thrust upon Ollie meant a lot more time at the desk than the hiking trails, he supposed.[break][break]

The flicker of his Ceruledge's flame masks the pang of sadness that streaks across the royal's expression at the next question. Despite it, he offers a small fabricated smile and nods. "I have. It's been a recurring phenomenon in GALAR for some time. But I wouldn't say it's exactly the same... Alpha Pokémon are strongly believed to be a product of natural selection. DYNAMAX, on the other hand, requires a foreign element."[break][break]

ETERNATUS.

[break]

Where NECROZMA had caused irreparable damage to GALAR through the DARKEST DAY, ETERNATUS had given rise to the phenomenon that had taken his father's life all those years ago.[break][break]

"Are you interested in DYNAMAX, Ollie?"[break][break]

Remiel asks, turning back to the art as if to distract himself.

[break][break] It's true that ALPHA POKEMON are commonplace enough that it wouldn't been surprising to hear that a Ranger would come across one. Ollie had certainly read many reports about it, and surely enough, there were even rangers who would like to specialize in the phenomena. But like Remy also said, it was a product of natural selection — or better worded, luck.

[break][break] Perhaps Ollie had just not been lucky enough in this lifetime.

[break][break] He tilts his head in consideration.

[break][break] "I guess?" he lands on, but isn't quite sure. He steps on the uneven path, watching as rocks roll further down. "Not anymore than anyone else would be, I think. I'd have to see it in-person, up close for me to decide." He flashes a grin. "With the upcoming Vital City Tourney, though, in Lilycove, I might get a chance."

[break][break] lam logan had told him that Lilycove was a power spot. It would've been a chance to try that out.

[break][break] "What about you, Mr. Archeologist? Are you interested in it?"

Remiel nods when Ollie reiterates his statement. And, though he doesn't necessarily care to voice its name into being, he does so anyway. It was the closest thing GALAR had to a real-life boogeyman, but he refused to live in such fear of it like others.[break][break]

"ETERNATUS."

They continue down the rocky path afterward as the HEAD RANGER expresses his thoughts on the DYNAMAX phenomenon. Though Ollie's wish to 'see it up close' almost triggers something in Remiel. He'd seen it up close before, after all. So close that the rest of the world was pushed to the margins.[break][break]

"As much as I would have liked to join the tournament, I'll be busy helping set up several exhibits at the museum," Remiel says as the rocky path they walk upon widens into a massive underground chamber. "I can't say I care all that much for DYNAMAX, however. It's cost the people of GALAR so much throughout history. It'll ask a high price of HOENN as well."[break][break]

'Eterna - what?'

[break][break] The word, for some reason, sent a shiver down the Head Ranger's spine. Despite not having heard it before, at least, not in any real capacity. Ollie was from Kanto, then transplanted to Hoenn, and then had spent a number of years vacationing off the shores of Kalos. There was no reason that he should've known about the nightmare that was Eternatus. The thing that had razed down all the walls of Galarian soil.

[break][break] And yet -

[break][break] Even the word triggered a flash of a memory behind the Ranger's eyes. A flood of poison pools sunken into graveyard soil, the clash of two storming titans in the sky, a battle that had felt more like dream - nightmare - then memory.

[break][break] Suddenly, his throat felt dry.

[break][break] So he's relieved then when the topic changes, back to the VITAL CITY TOURNAMENT and lam logan. Things that he's much happier discussing, because it's much more grounded in reality. At least his reality.

[break][break] "You think?" His head tilts towards the other as he talks of his criticism of the DYNAMAX phenomena. Ollie is carefully to keep his voice light-hearted, despite the rather dark topic. "What do you think, then, that we should do?"

[break][break] "Rocket's probably got all kinds of tricks up their sleeve. Well - though, I guess you'd know that best, huh?"

[break][break] His lips dimple into a smile, easygoing, as if he hadn't brought Remiel Calcifet's most bitter regrets right to the surface in such a simple inquiry.
