Gunner adjusted his scarf, pulling it tighter around his neck to ward against the cold that had beset Hoenn with autumn's coming end. The trees around him had shed their leaves, and the gray sky above promised rain, if not snow.[break][break]

But the chill and gloomy atmosphere was not what soured his mood the most, nor was he bothered by guard duty over the small shrine not far from Meteor Falls.[break][break]

No, it was the presence of none other than paxton concordas. The man was supposed to be Gunner's friend and trusted colleague, but revelations from a few months back had put Paxton in a different light.[break][break]

And so Gunner brooded as he picked up a paper cup of coffee and took a comforting sip. A box of doughnuts from Fallarbor Town sat on the bench between them, but he hadn't touched them yet.[break][break]

Simmering anger suppressed the appetite.

The mission is important, but not very difficult. It's easy to do guard duty, even better when you're out with a good partner. He tightened the scarf tied around his neck, burying his face into Gunner's gift. The mission is a balm to him. Back out in nature, outside of a stifling office and mounds of overdue paperwork. A break for his eyes, and his thoughts. [break][break]

He breathes out slow, watching pale clouds form from his breath and flow out before fading away. If he listened intently, he thought he could hear the crashing water at Meteor Falls. [break][break]

Paxton break the seal on the box of donuts, glancing over at Gunner before back at them. He decided to go for a vanilla frosted, eyeing the Christmas tree sprinkles before taking a bite. His eyes rove over the consecrated site before he swallows and asks, "How've you been?" there's a small pause as he offers his colleague a small smile. "Shrine mood getting to you? You don't cut me as the religious type."

Gunner stifled a grimace when Paxton addressed him, but he still managed to look emotionally constipated. "Could be better," he replied. "The shrine's not the problem."[break][break]

He wasn't religious, anyway. After seeing the horrors that vermin like Team Rocket could commit, he stopped believing Arceus cared about the world or humanity.[break][break]

Knowing Paxton's oblivious talkativeness was just going to piss him off more if he didn't bring up the issue between them, Gunner gave an exasperated sigh. He set his jaw and turned to look at his coworker.[break][break]

"Do you know a woman named mila alexopoulos?" he asked, testing the waters. Of course, he knew Paxton knew her. He knew Paxton had slept with her.

"Oh?" he tilted his head to show he's listening but continued to eat his donut. It felt more like a day at the park than a real guard duty. But luckily, the shrine lay undisturbed. He goes through half of his donut before looking over at Gunner, slow and seemingly unworried. [break][break]

He's quiet, but its less hesitancy and more he's peering at his partner's expression. "I know a Mila." He corrected. Her last name he hadn't bothered to remember. Mila had probably done the same. [break][break]

"I met up with someone named Mila in the summer during the carnival going around the region." he said, unconcerned.

Paxton's unconcerned reaction only stoked Gunner's ire more. It revealed itself in the way the corner of his mouth twitched in displeasure. He tore his gaze away, in an effort to stop himself from punching his colleague in the face.[break][break]

Perhaps Gunner should have been relieved that Paxton's interest in Mila was so surface-level. But the man was a fool, and fools did stupid things.[break][break]

"What's she look like?" he asked, attempting to sound casual and utterly failing.

"Uhh, she's probably my height. Bob black hair and pink-red eyes." he said as he finished his donut and plucked a stray napkin under the box to wipe his fingers away. "She's kind of funny. Why do you ask?" he said as he stowed away the crumpled napkins into his jacket pocket. [break][break]

He could just pull out his phone and check her contact information. He hummed trying to get an idea for something more significant than her appearance to help differentiate her. After all, there were probably dozens of Mila's around. "Oh, she offered to make me an outfit once. Said she designed for Primarina Designs." He looks back at his partner, wondering if he was trying to chase a lead.

Gunner hated this charade, pretending that he didn't already know anything about Paxton's dalliance with Mila. But neither could Gunner flat-out accuse Paxton of sleeping with his girlfriend, because in truth, he and Mila weren't dating.[break][break]

Technically, nothing was stopping her from seeing other people. Except that she was his, in a way Gunner couldn't put into words.[break][break]

"That's her. mila alexopoulos," the Fallarbor native said, before taking another sip of coffee. And then he dropped the bomb he knew would freak Paxton out: "She's a former Rocket, you know. A defector. I was assigned to oversee her re-acclimation into society."

"You're joking." he said, automatically as Gunner clocked the woman. But he noted, Gunner didn't actually answer his question yet. He glances back at the area they're watching, still as ever. Not even pokemon running around in the distance. The only sign of life him and his partner. [break][break]

As far as people go, Paxton was rather partial to Gunner. They seemed to have thee same philosophy when it came to work and PENELOPE LIVY . They'd bonded a greatly during the GOODBYE GALAR incident, even if he didn't recall all the details. But he knew what he felt was good. And with comfort came a lowering of one's guard. So the range of emotions that show on Paxton's face as he looks down to pick up his coffee are on display for his friend to see. Confusion. Shock. Disgust. Anger. Frustration. More confusion. "There's no way. I would've seen a report on this." he said simply, racking his brains as he went pale. [break][break]

He knew there were plenty of recent Rocket defections, mainly more high profile ones. "She's assigned to you? Since when?" he asked, pushing for more details. He couldn't have missed something like this. Then again, him and mila alexopoulos didn't really talk about stuff like this. She liked to lead, and he had been more than happy to follow.

The storm of emotions that passed over Paxton's face told Gunner everything he needed to know: that Paxton genuinely hadn't known who Mila was when he'd slept with her. Gunner didn't know whether to be relieved or insulted.[break][break]

Paxton was normally so thorough, especially with reports. How could he have missed this?[break][break]

"Yeah, a while back. Years ago," Gunner admitted, trying to act nonchalant. Yet his grip on his coffee cup tightened; the paper started to crumple beneath his fingers. "How'd you meet her? She hasn't attended Ranger Amnesty Program meetings in a while."

mila alexopoulos 's transfer was before his time it seemed. He hadn't heard or seen any of that in his work. He felt little relief when Gunner confessed it was an old case. He runs his way through a mental dossier of every defector to date since he'd taken his position still. Was he slipping? No way. [break][break]

He'd been meticulous with his AMIGO, blocking even the likes of Gunner. He'd purposefully sought out his coworkers and staff to block that avenue of communication to him. [break][break]

“Of course not through work.” He said almost pointedly. Probably lingering disdain from PENELOPE LIVY 's tryst with MATIAS SILPH and the aftermath of that moment in the office. “AMIGO. I forget who found who, but we linked up there then met up.” Even as he spoke his coffee is set back on the bench as he puts his face in his hands and groans in frustration. He tries to rationalize it but there isn't much to be said. The optics on his hypocrisy, ignorant as he'd been to it, were not good. [break][break]

“She's more into-...her business than anything to do with rangers.” He added, trying in some part to answer why she'd been missing meetings. “It's hard to hold much conversation when her tongue's down your throat. Or vice versa.” Because at the end of the day, they'd been in contact for one thing only. Nothing beyond surface level attraction.

That damned app. That godsdamned app that had caused so many arguments between Gunner and Mila that summer. His grip on the cup tightened even more, especially as Paxton continued to speak. [break][break]

"It's hard to hold much conversation when her tongue's down your throat. Or vice versa." [break][break]

Gunner instantly saw red. [break][break]

Without warning, he stood up from his seat and slammed his coffee onto the ground. The plastic lid burst free from the paper cup, sending dark liquid splashing across smooth, tiled stone. [break][break]

"Damn it, Concordas!" Gunner yelled, seething with rage. "Don't you fucking touch her again! I'm seeing her, got that?!" [break][break]

In the quiet of the shrine grounds, his swears and shouts were discordant, intrusive, and violating.

Before he can take a calming sip of his coffee, Gunner explodes on him. The shout echoed throughout sacred grounds and sent flying nearby birds pokemon. Paxton only flinches, dropping his cup on the ground and freezing as he stared at his partner. [break][break]

Paxton doesn't snap back, doesn't move at all. He stared, watching Gunner's face twist and the man stopped. All composure lost. The gears turn. The microwave dongs. The lightbulb flickers on.

His voice is small, not from fear but from the building realization he was having. He works it through out loud. “You said you were assigned to oversee her progress.” Paxton straightens up, pulled out of his panic as he focused on the one who'd even told him all this. “You were leading me-” a blink of betrayal before he stands, eyes narrowing into a glare. [break][break]

"You're fucking your parolee?!” Indignation. Because Paxton was ignorant. But Gunner was fully aware. He knew her better than he did. He was her fucking parole officer.

“You're throwing a fit over some fucking lowlife you stuck youe dick in? Can't find anything out of the office?” He asked fists clenching.

“Do you understand how serious this is? How fucked you would be if she reported you?!” He hissed. “Are you stupid?” He spat. How could he jeopardize evrything over a fucking terrorist? For how long??

Gunner couldn't deny the accusation. That he had taken advantage of Mila while technically an authority over her was guilt that had dogged him for years. She'd even teased him about it once or twice. But she'd never held it against him, and she'd always consented. [break][break]

Then Paxton called her a lowlife and Gunner's blood went cold as ice. [break][break]

"Yell at me all you want but don't you dare insult her in front of my face," he snapped, stepping right up to Paxton with the barely restrained aggression of a man seeking the slightest reason to punch something. [break][break]

"She wants nothing to do with Team Rocket. She's terrified of them. And she's done her time in the Amnesty Program. So don't you dare compare her to the likes of Isaac Merlo or Remiel Calcifet."

“Or what, Gunner?” Paxton said not moving an inch as the taller man squared up to him. “You'll what? And get creative with it.” He said, glaring at the man he's lost some respect for in seconds. He doesn't need to know a why or how. [break][break]
